The Okapi is a ratchet-lock clasp or slipjoint knife originally produced in 1902 for export to Germany's colonies in Africa. The knife takes its name from the giraffe-like central African okapi.
Okapi knives are no longer produced in Germany; in 1988, Okapi South Africa (then trading as All Round Tooling) bought the trademark and tooling and began producing the Okapi line of knives in South Africa. The South African Okapi lockback knives are produced with carbon or stainless steel blades, with or without serrations. The most commonly found Okapi knives in Africa are made of resin impregnated wood (usually cherry) and the blades are made of 1055 carbon steel.
Well known around the world but especially in Jamaica as badman/gangster knives or ratchet.

So many Okapis I never knew about! I knew of the of ratcheting and non-ratcheting. I really need to check out more Okapis! You can spot the fakes because they cost less and look better! I love it! 😸

Was my first pocket knife as well! I remember the first time I tasted that metalic taste you got when you cut an apple or some other acidic fruit. I thought it was poison hahaha.

Nice collection! I like my Kudu lite also. The Okapi is interesting as it’s associated with Africa and it’s cool collecting knives associated with different parts of the world. I love your moddded knives, very cool!

Thank you RJ. Okapies are cheap and not great fit and finish but it is the only SA production knife and they have been around for years. They are good working knives. Thanks for watching and have a great week

yes cool collection ,the guy that skinned the goat used an Okapi (he said it was a "three star" because of the starts on the handle). I wanted one so badly and remember getting one for my Bday from my dad. Had to sharpen, because they are sold blunt -so I leant how to use a file too. Still have that one, brings back some good memories.

A very nice video..interesting . One thing I have noticed is that on the very old German manufactured Okapi the “moon and stars” have actually been inlaid into the handle and not glued or pasted on. I am fortunate to have the original German one. Hou so aan..geniet jou videos. Groetnis.

I have a typical Okapi knife but without the metal attachments on the handle sides. Looks very old but in excellent condition, obviously hardly used. What could this knife be worth?

Considering that 1988 was before the reunification of Germany, were those from 1949 till 1988 still marked "Made in Germany" ? Also, the German manufacturer, Ernst Gerling G.M.B.H., was making all kinds of trays from some sort of laminated wood material pretty similar to the handles on the older knives.
@STUFFWEDO

I have been thinking of acquiring at least one of these for years, but it fell off of my mind until just to-day, when I happened upon some on eBay, so I am grateful for your comments about them, particularly the parts about spotting fakes. Are most of the fakes Chinese or Pakistani? And how much should one expect to pay for the real thing, or "real" Made in R.S.A. copies? Some of the ones on eBay are as inexpensive as US$15, including postage within the U.S., and come with brown cardboard boxes with "OKAPI" in huge, stylised letters.
@STUFFWEDO

The price and the box sounds about right. They are inexpensive knives and they are not known for great fit and finish in most cases the fakes are better quality. Thank you for watching Greg and have a great Sunday
