Damn,........ This is simply on loop for the past 30 mins or so... I don't even know any of their other songs and I only knew the studio version before

I like this version too. But what made me fall in love with the original (at least I think it's the original..?) version was how pared-down it seemed, even with the louder instrumental spurts. His vocals stand out more in the original. Makes it a bit more chilling and emo to indulge in.

Now at 40 years old, my thirst for "real blood" is a bit more sophisticated than it was at... say... 27. The earlier and much loved expression of one young man's apocalyptic and explosive yearnings evolved and took on nuance in its telling, naturally. On the other hand, narrative remains unchanged and frozen in time so why not expect the creator to give us the same packaging every time? Idk, probably because i expect the minstrel to still respect his older material. Additionally, this artist remains relevant and capable of continuing meaningfull expressions. His work continues to touch that elusive "thing" in me only reachable through this medium. That said, my thirst for "real cries" remains unchanged....

I like just about everything Will Sheff does and this is an interesting re-working of an ethereal classic. But the thrashing violence of the original For Real composition is really what made the song so timeless to start with. This is nice and all but it's not really Okkervil River is it?
@andrewgodfrey66908 жыл бұрын
Will's just trying something different. It's awesome, and as long as he's in the band, it's Okkervil River.

i think what you mean to say is, I'm glad this exists but the next time i see them live they better rock that s out!
@DAlexKablack8 жыл бұрын
Will has always had the ultimate control over the band, despite the fact the old members contributed their creative knowledge to those old albums and songs, it was probably under the direction of Will, at least during later albums. Will didn't need those members to be Okkervil, Okkervil is Will.

That version here is the one they play live on the actual tour. In fact, all the songs from Stage Names and Black Sheep Boy that they play on the tour have new arrangements (Unless It's Kicks, A Girl In Port, Our Life Is Not A Movie, So Come Back I Am Waiting and For Real). I did not like Our Life Is Not A Movie new version but all others are okay. So Come Back is pretty good, although I would've loved to hear it played like on the album. Great show nonetheless. That bassist is crazy entertaining to watch.

The vocals in this version are definitely cleaner and better than the album version, but I highly prefer the instrumentals in the original. This version is so muddy that you lose a lot of what made the original's instrumental accompaniment so poignant and hard-hitting. If only they could combine the best aspects of both versions into a single perfect rendition.

This reworking is fine and dandy, but will needs to realize that just because he is feeling stagnate, doesn't mean the music is. In no way does this stand up to the visceral and dark force that drove the original version of this awesome song. I totally understand his reasoning and where his is at this point in his life, but he has to back off and look at it from our perspective. And Ben Taylor, you are right....it is not Okkervil. Knowing how snarky he is, I could just imagine his response to this. But he should take into account that we LOVE his work and what was Okkervil before he takes total ownership of it.
