With no address no place to call home they can't get a job can't become contributing members of the community . This gives them that chance.

helping the homeless with decent shelter and emotional support is a great motivator. The laziness that man spoke about is called depression. No one can get out of depression if they're living on the street. They have to have decent housing where they can stay clean and eat every single day. This is a great idea for any Community across this whole country and every single City to do all the time. Helping the homeless live decently is cost-effective for any City.

I agree. I'm one of those people. I had 4 jobs in the past. And still became homeless. Because I was forced to babysit so many people, until I broke down mentally. (Not to mention abuse in my family home.) And somehow, I'm the "lazy" one.

I can't believe some of the hateful comments I'm reading.I actually lived there from the first day it opened on June 30 2017 til April 2018. I was homeless because I was jobless. They gave me a beautiful little cottage to live in as long as I needed it. I wasn't living on the street but I didn't have a place of my own. McCowin Village gave me a sense of security and a peace of mind. I found me a state job less than 2months and I'm still working there. Being homeless is nothing to turn you're nose up at. Anyone can become homeless. Not everybody who is homeless is an addict. I never did drugs or alcohol and I don't have a mental health issue. I just fell on hard times and had no family to turn to. Do your research before you start judging what transitional housing really is and how it help those in need.

I can't believe expecting people to trade their labor for life's necessities is regarded as hateful. The money spent to give you a house you didn't need would have instead gone to creating more jobs, jobs which you're claiming is what is needed.

I'm glad that you were able to get a job, and, I am assuming that you no longer live there and have your own place. I think these homes should be transitional, and, once a person is able to get back out there and support themselves, then they should move on, and allow the next person in need to use these free accommodations.

Deserving it is one thing; obtaining it without having people hate you for it is completely another thing. Been in those shoes, and many people really condemn you for being in that position. A number of things can cause it, but lack of jobs, high-housing costs, and high cost of day care for kids are just a few. There are tons of other reasons that are completely in different directions.

Tiny houses are not the be all and the end all for helping people. Empty Warehouse spaces, need rejuvenations as well. And should be rebuilt, to house 30% homeless, Studio apartments, 40% Lower income one or two bedroom units, as well as 30% transitional traditional housing for those non violent prisoners that are now homeless, and job seeking is a huge issue. I think that by diversifying the apartments, they will eventually grow into a very dynamic and self supporting community.

Thank you I was trying to clean homeless and lost everything including $40,000 in cash 118 acres in land and I was never lazy. I worked in between as much as possible but after two major emergency surgeries and losing everything from illness. What's more I had to give away everything I owned twice just to make sure that I didn't get evicted. I lived in my car for 2 years and then later had my car stolen with the last of everything I had in it.. one third of the people who are homeless have gone through similar troubles I know of two women who have severely handicapped boys one woman had her house burned down and another woman I lost her house in Catrina. those women will care for those young boys until the day they die and they will never be in a position to own their own home again. I'm worried about all the corporate welfare that's teaching corporations to be greedy and lazy

Yeah, that guy saying its enabling them to be lazy, just shows the worst side of humanity. Getting people into a small home, gives them the chance to rebuild their lives. I am a true believer those who live on the streets become addicted to a drug, simply to hide from reality of the coldness of the world around them. Fear and alone can break anyone down to the point, that they lose themselves in the process. Getting them out of the situation with comfort of knowing they can rebuild - gives them the strength they need to break free from the depressive state of loss.

Homelessness is part of a downward spiral, and these houses are an effort to interrupt that. There are some of these people who may be mentally ill and perhaps will never be fully self-supporting, but they are still human beings and our responsibility. Hopefully, most of them will become productive citizens if we give them the opportunity. To get most jobs you need to have a legal address, a place to clean yourself up and launder your clothing, a safe place to sleep, and most of all, a positive attitude and a reason to have hope. It's hard to have hope when you are hungry, dirty and sleeping in your car.

Each community does what it can. Finding and buying land in expensive areas leaves less for the houses, but you can't underestimate the value of even a simple, yet safe, private space with a door that locks and a real street address. For many who fall through the cracks, it's the hand up that they need.

Until one has walked in the shoes of someone down trodden it's wrong to judge them especially these days. People in California are working full time jobs and are homeless in areas because they are priced out of the market. Imagine having a job making 70,000 a year and housing averages over 800k. A while back you could afford rent then the big tech companies moved in and real estate went crazy. 1 person had rented her apartment for over 20 years the building was sold and she got a letter saying her tent was increasing from 2300 per month to over 8000. She couldn't pay that much and was living in her car til she found something she could afford. She found the only thing she could afford for 2500 per month. All it was was a basement with and small bath room and 1 small window. But despite her pay she was homeless for a time. Some people forget they have been fortunate in life but what is given cam also be lost.

This is a nationwide issue, and every community tells itself that the folks are from somewhere else. Usually not true of most. Many reasons: Rents rose + wages didnt keep up. Some folks lost homes in the recession + never recovered. Sometimes its the loss of a spouse. Many times, huge medical bills or caring for a longtime ill spouse lead to bankruptcy. Check out the Invisible People KZbin channel if you want to hear peoples stories. There are better models of homeless villages out there. Where they are charged rent of $250.00 - $350.00 per month, they become members of the village they live in, and, contribute to the building of and then taking care of the village. Which increases their self esteem, knowing that they help build the home they live in, and, that they are being valued as a co-manager of the village they live in. They feel as if they are being given a hand up, rather than a hand out.

I thought "community housing", "low income housing," like the projects and section 8 were for those who otherwise can not afford to have a roof over their head. are there not enough? or are those only for families? I know a few people who are single who's rent is paid for through section 8. Again, I don't mean this in any sarcastic way, I'm trully confused. just because, watching video clips like this one make it sound like there is no other infrastructure within cities and communities to address those who can't afford to put a roof over their heads. I'm just wondering the difference.

The Bush administrations did nothing to fix the problem, and Obama was the worst with many cutbacks to both foodstamps and housing. Who knew Democrats could be so heartless towards women, children , vets and the elderly? As to those single people who have gotten housing aide - a little known secret is that 90% are former drug addicts and / or severely mentally ill. Those are the only people who get housing now a days. A year of rehab and they are handed a set of keys. Most only pay $200 a month max rent, while children and the elderly are basically discriminated againgst because they have not done drugs !!

@Reesicup0815, i know you are not being sarcastic and that is why i am going to answer you. Normally section 8 housing are for women with children or families who dont make enough to pay rent in a given city, but normally it is for single mothers. Also section 8 housing is up to the owner of the home, and most home owners dont do it. As for public housing, you have to understand the history of public housing to understand why it does not work now. I personally think smaller homes are a good ideal for singles without children , young people just starting out in life and for people whose children are grown, no huge rent payments, no huge mortgages, helps them save money budget and not accumulate bullshit.

Also, in many places rents have increased far faster than wages. In our town the average renter makes $22,000/year, so can comfortably afford a rent around $625, but the average rent here is over $1,300/month. Many people live paycheck to paycheck, so a major medical issue, loss of a job, loss of a spouse, etc. can cause a spiral of events that end up with people homeless. Here all the section 8 waitlists are closed, and we need about 13,500 more units of housing priced around $625 or below to fill the need. Not surprisingly, we have the highest homeless opulation per capita in the nation.

Giving houses to the homeless simply enables them to remain homeless. This has been demonstrated time and again. The real problem is not that they don't have housing. The real problem is that they are ill. The majority of homeless people are either having mental issues or are addicted to one drug or another. The state of Rhode Island has approached this problem and basically solved it by treating the foundation of the problem. The people who go through their program very seldom return to the streets if ever. The program does not give them homes but helps them to become well again. Then, the homeless can and do join conventional society and leave the streets.

"very seldom" There were bums in ancient Roman times and there are bums today. The difference as you alluded to is it is far more profitable today here and hence the growing vagrant horde.

@@mikeaskme3530 actually the information that I was using was based on a report about what Rhode Island was doing to help people get off the streets. I started fact-checking however, and I have discovered that that report I read was incorrect. What Rhode Island does is offer help to those who are incarcerated to help them get off of drugs. Although some of those people were homeless, the report led me to believe that this was offered to all homeless. So, as you can see, this was not my opinion. I simply got some bad information. I did just Google "homelessness and drug addiction" and many articles came up from qualified sources that would definitely lead one to believe that there is more drug use among homeless than the non homeless population. Quite a bit more, actually.

Three years later and giving people better free housing has made vagrancy go: a) down, giving more free stuff causes people stop accepting free stuff b) up, giving more free stuff causes ever more people to live off free stuff

I don't believe in giving homeless people really nice places. There is no incentive to work if it's free and it's comfortable, meanwhile low income hard-working people have a tough time finding places this nice. I don't like that do-gooder mentality that some wealthy people have. I think all they're really doing is clearing their conscience and making themselves feel good by helping the poor little poor people.

What’s this about “incentive”? Are you serious? You believe that people who are homeless are just looking for free stuff? Get educated. You’re jealous for nothing. How many homeless people have you talked to or gotten to know? Or is it easier for you to generalize? What’s with you that you can’t rejoice in seeing people being helped? Most people I’ve met who are homeless are barely coping with health issues- mental illness included. And you want to talk “incentive”....getting the HELP you need is incentive that one’s life matters to others and that’s often the beginning of healing. From THERE and ONLY there can someone start to desire to be a part of the larger community. You can’t even see with your judgements and condemnation and speculations how YOU are a part of this problem, causing it, or at the very least perpetuating it. Let all cast a downward eye on you and see how well you fare. You think someone would employ you with a view like that? It’s not about “incentive”....yours is obviously GREED! No man is an island.

@@sonofhibbs4425 Oh, please! Those people that you mention that are barely coping with health issues, mental illness included, should be seeking help at hospitals. My husband and I lived in our vehicle, worked our way out of debt, was able to buy a property, start our own successful business. I wouldn't want one of these homes given to me, I would want to pay my way, to hold onto some of what's left of a person's self esteem. If we were given a hand up, rather than a hand out, once we were able to get out of our situation and buy our own home, I'd give up this free living, for someone else who needs it. That is what this other commenter was getting at.

Well for the most part that's just not true! If you are homeless ,all energy is used to find food, somewhere fo sleep. ..if they had a transition home, they don't have to worry about that anymore....can go job hunting ..get a job ..and eventually move out to a different place as they save the money! ...then leave the cottage for other homeless people.....get a grip sir...homelessness is Not a choice!!!!
