A few of us, here in Oz, have a pal who we call Pythagorus. No matter what it is, he always has an 'angle'. I wouldn't let him anywhere near one of my building projects though . . . if his life depended upon it, his maths wouldn't save him. Btw, I have just set-out my new raised garden bed. I had the idea of using the old mathematician's theorem and came here to reassure myself. It did. Tomorrow I dig out the footing to make the 10' timbers level. I can feel a few more beds coming on. 😃😃 Thank you from Oz. 🇦🇺

This was my go to method when I did metal roofing many years ago. The only time it doesn't work is when you have someone that can't build a building square. Using the 3-4-5 works great but it really shows how bad the roof is out of square when it's not built correctly. Great video!

If you want to create a right angle you have to come at it from the 3:5 line because only when you have the two lengths pegged will you be sure that you are getting a right angle with the last leg which will ONLY BE 4 if it makes a right angle triangle. If you do it the way in the video using the 3 & the 4 you have already constructed your right angle (which may be wrong or inaccurate) and will have too much or too little string along the hypotenuse. The Megalithic stone builders knew this because they carried around a circle of rope with 12 knots and constructed their right angle triangle accordingly. This is 5,000 years before Pythagoras called it his theorem. Examples of this can be seen at Carnac in France using the 3:4:5 ratio.

This maybe a dumb question, but if you are off on the 3,4,5 measurement, how do you determine which point needs to be moved? for example, if you pivot the triangle on the tail end say 10 degrees, it would still measure 3,4,5 but not give you a straight line?
@Gamingwithjaizz

Actually she is dumb. If we do as she says, we will never get a straight line right angle.

Any information on how to add building up. My job requires a drawing for every building including measurements. Just looking for other ways to add up large building. Closing them out with measurements that corelate to the shot distances. Typical match north to south and east to west to get equivalent measurements. I understand perimeter and how to add a straight line but there's another solution that involves adding and subtracting

I was talking to chatgtp yesterday about this. Pythagorean theorem sideAsquared+sideBsquared=side Csquared. With the correct size strings you could layout pyramids. 9+15=25. The square of 25 is 5. Im just celebrating understand it, and seeing it in practical use. Cool tutorial :)

@@Shepardofman Yes. To see what it could do. The conversation started someone where along the lines of 'teach me mathematics'- Then I requested information on something I had a hard time with in school. The phytagorean theorem. After I relearned it, I realized I could apply it to the solar shed/stands I was building. I was having a tough time squaring off the foundation. Full circle. Friend? No, you are my freind, oddly enough... ChatGTP is a toy and tool. A ridiculously amazing tool. Speaking of tools. :)

No, 3,4,5 are just coincidentally convenient numbers to remember. They work because of the formula - A²+B²=C² If side A = 3 and side B = 4, than: 3² = 9 (3x3) 4² = 16 (4x4) 9+16=25 √ 25=5 (25=5x5) If side A and B are both 4 than: 4² = 16 (side A) 4² = 16 (side B) 16+16=32 √ 32=5.657
