My grandmother told me back in the 60's that the way to pick a good watermelon is to turn it over, and look at the under side. The more yellow on the bottom, the sweeter the melon. Since then, I have never picked a bad watermelon.

Thanks so much for these tips John,, I did not read all 396 comments to see if I'm duplicating BUT - watching you do the "tap or slap" test I want to add a note - I live in Washington state so farmers in our state can grow some pretty awesome mellons too,, if we hold the mellon in our hand (or place the other free hand on the opposing side of the mellon) and using one finger (I use my index finger) TAP the mellon,, if you can feel the tap resonate thru the mellon, transmitting the vibration into the palm of your other hand "usually" you can be sure the mellon is of a high liquid content and is "ripe". BUT,, as you've said, these tests only help us eliminate the mellon we DO NOT WANT but don't always guarantee a sweet fruit. Thanks again,, your videos are AWESOME!! Thank YOU and Thank KZbin for sharing them!!

Trust a girl with a childhood in - NW Tennessee and a Family full of Garden Farmers🍉 Quick Tips: 1. Creamy yellow spot on the bottom - Garden Ripening - Good Spot! Sweet-Indicator 2. Dull Finish is ripe, shiny is still unripened. Sweeter 3. Darkest color of the melon geno-type in the batch. Best Flavor 4. Heaviest of the batch of it's kind = Juiciest. FYI - the small round dark green or striped are called "Table Melons" and they are often the best melons in grocery stores, especially early in the summer and also in August. (My favs) The Thumping/tapping a watermelon is harder to judge by (and it bruses some types of melons) - (there's plenty of farm boys smiling at that one - it takes time to perfect that technique) Melons can look fabulous and taste just ok - 🍉use the weight tip for juicy - the yellow "Field Spot" for sweet, (It's the time in the garden for natural on the vine ripening time, that makes that tip the most reliable) Melons flavors are affected by too much or too little rain and gardeners that over use Miracle Grow for the size effect - they come out quite flavor-weak. The stem spot isn't of much value in Watermelon selection - - Ask a Farmer!

at 4 min, he finally gets to the 1st tip...SMELL it, finally at 5:54 2nd tip, you PRESS your finger into the rind, NOT GOOD, if you can actually press your finger into the rind,at 6:47 check the WEIGHT.. if 2 watermelons are the same size....choose the heavier one, then the "TAP" test, which we all know about, but he does not explain how tapping it can result in it being the sweetest one on the table, 12 mins to go, but I'm finished. The sun spot for the sweetness is not a false tip at all. The yellow spot has to be yellow enough, though. It’s not good when the yellow spot either looks too pale or becomes too brown. That indicates the melon is either not ripe or too ripe. The size of the yellow spot is not that important, though.

Soils vary and do affect the sweetness. The one you thumped was a bit on the green side it had a higher thud meaning not enough water. A deeper thud means much more water then look for the extra weight. Yellow is very important. The darker the yellow the riper it was when picked while light yellow to white between the green you should pass up. My favorites are watermelons out of Hermingston eastern Oregon and Washington. The soil there was blasted up out of the Columbia gorge when the ice dam broke during the melt back of the ice-age, depositing rich minerals and nitrogen which really adds to the sweetness.

We like it focused, to the point, then get off the stage.You're too repetitive and wordy -annoying and exhaustive. I haven't been able to even find a watermelon or grapes with seeds for half a century. You want a good watermelon? Look for a large yellow spot where it sat in the garden ripening. The female (round) is sweeter than the male (long egg shape). Buy from farmers that don't use chemicals which kill nutrition and flavor. I buy peaches from Sam's club and they are almost always the sweetest, juiciest, dripping down your arm, can't just eat one! Try the 'white' meat peaches. yummm

We shouldn't press on avocados once they start to change color. that's a sign that they're ripening. pressing on them is what creates those black inedible spots under the skin.
@ExtraordinaryLiving5 жыл бұрын
We should not press on avocados even when they are still green ... *we should NOT press on ANY avocados at all* ! Pressing on green avocado still create bruises and air pockets that, when the avocado starts to ripen, *the space in the air pocket allow mold growth* . Furthermore, the outer layer of the fruit right inside the skin, that greenish layer, is the highest in antioxidant, and pressing the fruit damage and destroy this antioxidant layer. My biggest pet peeve: Too many people at the grocery stores select the avocados they eventually buy by squeezing every single one of them ... they squeeze even the green ones. I understand that people are taught the pressing/squeezing method is for finding out whether the avocado is ripe enough to be used, but what is the point for squeezing a green one?!?! *THE GREEN ONES ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT RIPE! SQUEEZING THEM ONLY DAMAGES THEM FOR NO GOOD PURPOSE.* The proper selection method is by looking at the fruit, all kinds of fruit actually, and sometimes by smelling them (some fruits) for sweetness. This is why I watched other avocado shoppers when I used to buy this fruit ... I don't bother with any ones that people touched at all. Now-a-days, I actually stop buying avocados because I see people keep squeezing the green one I typically would buy and ripen at home, yet I frequently discovered the rotten results I described above!

Definite had one today that was sweet and red. It had a yellow spot, not white. It also had the dried, brown vine at the end. It was heavy for it's size, LOTS of water. Finally, I didn't know this, but another shorter video I saw said that watermelons also have gender. The males are longer and oblong, while the females are rounder and stouter. Guess which they said is the sweeter? The female. The one I bought was female. I could tell when he cut the watermelon he bought that it was already getting old, because when you hear them crack open easily, that's a sure sign they are getting old. (I've bought a few like that in the past.) And if you look at the video, you can see that the rind is already started to shrivel. One last tip from the other video, they said you may see some brown, webbed lines on the outside of the watermelon. Signs that bees spent time pollinating that particular watermelon. But I heard him say a few tips that I would consider looking for to confirm all the other ones I have learned. Looking forward to the yellow one I bought to see if it is sweet! Good hunting and watermelons, everyone!
@Apollo4408 жыл бұрын
John, you didn't show the sugar marks. The real marks are those brown flecks, they're not smooth as the melon is, but rough. These are the spots where THE BEES took sugar when the melon was growing. Also what you didn't say - the tail has to be dry. If it's dry - the melon is ripe, it sucked all the juices from the stem and was ready for picking. If the tail is big and green, still with juices inside - then it wasn't ready for picking yet.
@sandykarlin46176 жыл бұрын
Apollo 440 yes, the brown spots are 'bee kisses'. They 'kiss' the sweet ones.

ONE MORE TIP that I didn't hear which is related to the yellow spot that he mentioned is that if the watermelon has a big flat spot where the yellow spot is it could mean that the melon ripened on the vine and began sagging. Please let me know if this works for you.

It may be covered in the video, but weight of the watermelon compared to its size helped me get a really good one this year. I picked out one that wasn't gigantic (it was about the size of a basketball), but seemed rather hefty considering its size, and it was mostly deep red, juicy and sweet. I don't particularly like watermelon, but I've seen so many videos about the health benefits of its juice that I decided to go ahead and get one and try it. John, to my dismay I tried all your tips. My wife was sitting over my shoulder the whole time going, nope, nope, nope. Well it turns out she was right! The way she picks out the best one is by looking at the ground spot. If it is yellow in color as opposed to white (for store variety, seedless watermelon) it is ripe. She picks it that way and always comes up with a sweet one. I do believe the heaviest is best as well too because of what you said about the water content. Hope this helps some people!

Good video, John, want to add just a bit. The yellow belly spot on melons: it's not the size of the spot, it's the color. If it's white, it's not ripe yet. It needs to be yellow. The deeper the yellow, the riper the melon. If it's dark yellow, like school bus yellow, it's over ripe. Also, if the surface is glossy, it's not ripe. You want that dull bloom all over the rind. However, if you rub the rind with a cloth, you can wipe off the bloom and have a glossy surface. Not likely to find polished melons, though, so usually, you can rely on having the dull surface to help identify a ripe melon. It never occurred to me to smell them, great tip! So's and your other tip about pressing on the rind. If the rind is dull, the belly is yellow, and the rind is still hard with no give, I bet you'll have a perfect melon.

And good Lord, like, the hundreds of times he says "you guys" is just PHENOMENAL--worthy of one of those ribbons! Also like, you know, the number of times he says "like" Extremely distracting!. I can't like listen any more because like, there's too many 'likes" and "you guys"--

JUST KNOCK ON IT FOR CHRIST SAKE! IT'S THE BEST AND MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO TELL THE RIPENESS FOR ANY MELON. You can tell the sound best apart by knocking with your 2nd row knuckles, the middle joints among the three joints of all your fingers. The more vibrations you hear like a hollow drum, the riper and sweeter.

insufferably long.... skip to 8:00... the best is the pat/sound test... pat the melon and take the lowest sound... works every time.

I always choose watermelon a yellow spot on it. It comes red from inside. I keep it for 2 to 3 days n than cut it.

excellent rundown ... thanx never thought to smell it but the rest I do ... I eat watermelon every day of my life for breakfast and lunch ... so hydrating and refreshing, even though it makes you pee a LOT!!! Here in FL they have a South American supermarket and its available year round. Almost can never find organic, and when I do, hard to afford $7-8.99 for a mini personal, so I don't juice unless organic.

IN MY VIEW The one tip I have NEVER understood is the tapping 'sound' that we are able to hear for a sweet melon. Your demonstratiion tip comparing the 3 watermelons did not clarify which correct 'sound' I am suppose to hear. However, the rest of your tips are Great!

You are not speaking to people who've never eating watermelon before! People wouldn't even come to this video if they weren't above the normal interest in watermelon! The way you ended that cut whipping the knife like you did could have gone right into your wrist! Don't cut on air if you are not going to be more careful kids do watch things like oh watermelon! And if you said use all my tips don't just use this one one more time I was going to scream. I know you're just a guy who's into fruits and vegetables but I'm not sure you know that you can be annoying at times it is 2:43 when I am watching this so there is obviously a reason why I am watching this at 2:43 a.m. and then might not be in the best of moods either. I said what was on my mind and I stand behind it I'll still watch your videos. Thank you for sharing and have a great day :-)

I just knock on mine. If it sounds hollow like a basketball, it is good to go. Works every time. I never buy seedless. Their flavor is bland compared to their seeded cousins, or their flavor is one-dimensional.

In selecting grown men who are fully mature, not lightweights & safer for kids, we look for NO BANGS. Not always the MOST reliable indicator, but a good starting point.

I tell y'all my single and very successful trick ! Simple as this ...give a good thump to melon..a good crisp flesh will have a hollow ringing...if it has a solid dead ring..... it's probably mush ...over ripe

I’ve tried all these tips multiple times and none of it works! It can be perfect in all tests but still be eh! Look at the one this guy picked, you can see it’s not a sweet one. He even said so! You all have tips and I’ve tried them all and it’s all BS! It’s totally a crap shoot and if you get a super sweet one, it’s just good luck, nothing more!

Cyclospora and cryptosporidia come to mind whenever I see people cutting melons open without washing them first. Whether it be avocados, bananas, watermelons, etc...wash it with natural liquid Castille soap ( Bronner's ) and water mixed in a spray bottle, it's not worth risking getting sick or dying.
