You've seriously got a rare talent for interpreting song meanings. My God, I love this song. It has been an anthem for me since I was a teenager when I was getting into SP. Way back then, I didn't really try too hard to dissect the lyrical meaning, I just knew how the song made me feel. For special songs like this one, I like keeping it that way. Respecting the mystery. But I really like your interpretation, and it seems to be spot on as always.

I read an interview from Billy Corgan about this song. He basically said the guitar at the beginning was some second hand guitar he had bought and eventually didn't work right and had those tones. He almost tossed it but didn't and then liked the sound it made and use it for Mayonaise.

Giving this song it's distinct "feedback" the pickup was bad and would feedback anytime the guitar wasn't being played. He loved it and made it part of this song.

With that being said, this song is full of so much emotion in the lyrics, voice, and instruments...it's definitely one that I have listened too so many times in my life. Fun fact, the "famous" feedback from the guitar in this is derived from Billy wanting a different sounding guitar, bought one from a pawn shop down from the studio and the pickup was bad and would feedback anytime it wasn't being played. Billy loved the effect and worked it into the song. Amazing song from an amazing album...

Stumbleine also makes me feel so nostalgic for something i don’t even know exists. it simultaneously brings me back to 96/97 and hearing Mc&IS for the first time after gish and SD. The album art. The tour for it. But this song and Soma are 2 of my absolute favorites of all time always. It has every sound that was poignant and relevant during that time period musically.
