I’m so glad you picked this song to react to. I’ve been trying to get someone to do a reaction to this for over a year now and yes it is very relevant to the world today. So relevant that it’ll make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. A couple of other songs of his that are favorites of mine are Mama Tried & My Favorite Memory. As I sit here at almost 70 years old white man and listen to this song and watch the video that goes with it, I almost cry, because there is so much truth in this song for the white AND the Black people. I am reminded I am on the downside of life, I cry not because it's about over, but because the young today will miss the real America as it really was as the song talks about it.

This was going to be recorded by Johnny Paycheck. He did a demo record but never showed up to finish it. The label gave it to Merle. Good move. I was a roadie for Paycheck at the time and heard his demo. It was good but Merle is the man.
