Okuma Convector CN20 line counter fishing reel how to take apart and service

I’ve never used a reel like this but found this very interesting. Great video for your library Dennis! I had to totally disassemble one of my big Shimano SSG7000 Rear Drag reels last night because it got dropped in sand and water (not by me!) it has the worst c-clips I’ve ever messed with. Just the 10 seconds in that sand and water filled that reel with wet sand. I could not wait until I got it home so I totally cleaned and serviced it here at the beach. - not an easy task as I had tools but not my workbench at home. Anyway it is back in service again.- Chris

Glad you were able to do that. I've had a few reels where that dunking happened and they were left to dry out in storage and then nothing moved at all. - Best wishes - Dennis

Yeah - I've worked on these before. That darn bushing on the gear post with the flat sides was one of the first "how do I get the reel back together on questions to figure out! Once you do, you don't forget! Thanks - Dennis

I just got a Roybi like you did a few days ago, for "parts" after I removed the line that got jammed in it , I now have nice working reel

Very nice! Surprises can be good too! I have purchased a few parts reels that were better than the one I was repairing and were given up as lost for simple reasons - Good luck fishing with the "new" reel - Dennis

Looking for some help on a Okuma Convector cv-45ds. The line counter is not working, so I purchased a new line counter part to replace the old one. How ever it is still not working. It seems the part can only go in one way. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

I have this same reel and when I was stripping the line off on a high speed spooler it appeared to seize up. Now the spool is very hard to move in free spool and when you engage the reel it doesn't reel. Any ideas of what may have happened and what I should look for?

After watching your video and taking the reel apart I fixed the issue. There were two issues. The floating gear pia wasn't actually seated properly when I took it apart. It was actually off the rod and just floating around inside. The other issue was there was a little line in the gearbox of the handle side. After correcting those two issues the reel seems to be working perfectly! Without this video I would have never been able to even take this thing apart! Thanks!

Hi, any ideas why my reel releases sometimes when loading/ tightening on downrigger?

I'm not sure on how it is working with the down-rigger. There may be too much pressure or load on the A/R and it could cause the free spool release??

I have a contender 20c, the handle goes in reverse even though the reel is in the forward position, can't figure whats wrong

Sounds like th Anti-reverse has failed

Interestingly enough, I first saw this design on the Shakespeare tidewater 30L and I was surprised to find an identical internal design on the Okuma reels, because they are competitors! Thanks as always - Dennis
