@@ricksterdrummer2170 Spasm is the first Meshuggah song that got me into the band, all because of the drumming. The snare ghost notes in that are horrible as some of them fall in unison with an accented hi-hat, others are in unison with a normal hi-hat and others are in between the hi-hat 8ths. The best transcription (and cover) of that song are by Troy Wright but even he doesn't bother to put the ghost notes in the score as they are pretty much constant. With the double bass hertas, I can play it at a reasonable speed (not as fast as Bleed though) but as soon as I try to add in quarters or 8ths on the hi-hat it just falls apart for me.

I have to say it’s great to see someone not afraid to show the learning stages of something. It takes courage to open up and show something you are a beginner at. Still sounds great for only a couple weeks. As someone that is also a beginner at drums I can feel the pain when your brain hurts with some of the tricky parts. It’s like I need 4 brains, one for each limb.

I loved this video. Seeing Ola trying something a little out of his comfort zone. I think its a testament to pantera and vinnie pauls legacy, influence and groove, so much that a professional musician of Ola's experience and calibre is still able to find inspiration in panteras music to want to learn a new instrument just for the pure satisfaction of jamming out. Love it.

Great job! Vinnie was my inspiration to start playing drums 30 years ago. You have all this technology, I had a boom box with a cheap pair of headphones. Stick grip is a matter of finding that good stick balance in your hand and comfort. As far as playing the kick pedal, there are so many different styles (just like picking). I use the toe method, since it most resembles the way you use your toes when walking. As far as seating, you want your thighs to be able to move freely, so play with the height of your throne. Other than that, it’s practice, practice, practice.

Advice on learning the kick: Heel up/ down doesn't really make a difference. Do whichever one is comfortable for you. Doing single stroke hits can be done by flexing the ankle, and the more you practice the more precise, and powerful you become. When doing double bass licks, or some hauling DB runs: basically pick up your whole legs and use long, deliberate strokes. It's the same motion as if you're running, really. The triplet fills and stuff in the beginning will come naturally after a few weeks of practice, and learning a couple techniques that are most comfortable to you. P.S. Heel-Toe is a good one to have in your arsenal. Makes the quick DB fills super easy.
@Pericles777
@Pericles777 2 жыл бұрын
I would argue that heel up/down should be used accordingly depending on dynamic level.
@stormbornbjornsson6576
@stormbornbjornsson6576 2 жыл бұрын
@@Pericles777 I can see your point. I personally have found that the dynamics are more so in where your foot is on the pedal than the angle of your foot. However; if you're more used to one position than the other, changing up the angle of your foot * can* effect dynamics. I just don't think it's enough to matter, personally.
@sega.milkis
@sega.milkis 2 жыл бұрын
It makes HUGE difference!!! Since heel down makes you engage tibialis anterior muscles (front of the shin) which are WEAK af compared to the calves. Especially for aggressive and FAST metal drumming. Calves (heels off of the ground approach) are much more preferable and effective to use. PS Gene Hoglan is an exception XD
@dreammachine86
@dreammachine86 2 жыл бұрын
Heel-toe is an interesting one for me. I can only use it for doing a quick double stroke on my right foot bass drum pedal and generally just use it to spice up fills or for chops between closed hi-hat, snare and bass drum. It's helpful for keeping the hi-hat closed but I also find it just has a more agressive feel than doing a double hit on a bass drum using a double pedal. I can't do the continuous heel-toe motion on a double pedal that a number of really talented extreme metal drummers use for crazy speeds. I've noticed the technique I use for the heel-toe motion is different to most drummers I see doing it, as I fully stamp my heel into the pedal for the first stroke and use my toe area for the second. Whereas the drummers that use it for fast double bass speed seem to not contact their heels with the pedal and are just using the up-down motion. I imagine it's a lot more effiicent doing it that way hence why they can reach such fast speeds, but still need to build up the co-ordination to be able to do it continuously.
@stormbornbjornsson6576
@stormbornbjornsson6576 2 жыл бұрын
@@dreammachine86 I play it the same way! I'm personally not a fan of heel-toe, but it really makes the quick triplet bursts easier, and gives then a snappier, more aggressive feel. And I just get bored and do a bunch of dumb shit heel-toe style. Lmao

Great work Ola! Been playing drums for about 20 years now, and one of the best bits of advice I ever got on technique for holding the sticks is to use all of your fingers. If you use your thumb through your middle finger to do the heavy lifting and keep the ring and pinky in contact to help guide, you will have a lot more control. Especially when you get in to rolls and paradiddles, using all of your fingers along with your wrists will save a lot of arm strain. Keep at it man! Fantastic cover!

Great! Keep on drumming on this channel! Pantera is a fantastic choice. Every single hit or kick is there for a musical reason. Vinnie demonstrates extraordinary musical taste in every decision of hitting/kicking what when. Without that it wouldn't have that same effect, wouldn't be Pantera, clearly. So Vinnie's style is full of great lessons in music making and songwriting in general, plus in (metal) drumming, obviously. With every hit/kick he's writing the song, period.

Watching anybody learning the drums for the first time is a good feeling to see. So I'm enjoying this. One thing: it's common for first timers but goes away after playing and getting comfortable, with the arms, you're gonna need to be more fluid in the joints. Elbows, wrists, fingers. You're stiff while you're hitting, you have to be like water. It'll go away but you'll understand what I mean. With kicks, I usually tell everybody when it comes to kicks, ride cymbals and hi-hats, treat triplets, quadruplets, or any kind of multiple strokes, think of them as twitches. You can get creative in your hits. Lastly, if anybody tells you you're doing something wrong, stay away from those people. Simple as that.

For just 2 weeks this is phenomenal, you have moves typical for a beginner but overall being able to actually follow groove in a song like that is better than many people after even a few months of practice

One practice tool that has helped me a lot in drumming is to record yourself playing simple things and then sit down and analyse what your weaknesses are and then you can work on that during your rudiment part of practice

I think for a beginner you did really well, definitely don’t think I could pick it up that quickly.

Drummer here...fun to watch you jump into this. As you mentioned for tips, try to squeeze your fingers to get the rebound so your not whipping the sticks so much with your wrist. Wrist comes back with the rebound then squeeze with fingers to drive the stick back into the head. This takes a lot of time but it makes it much easier to play and get a consistent sound....Let your fingers stretch back before squeezing. Also, with E drums its always hard to get a realistic response, especially with the rubber cymbals.

Dime was absolutely amazing and stole the spotlight in Pantera, but when you see how hard it is Vinny deserved more credit. Was a fantastic drummer!

While you haven't totally nailed the double bass parts, your timing is really good! And those 7/8 bars on the verse are probably realy challenging to play as a beginner, so good job!

Honestly learning on a e kit will bring your practice to a real kit. You're actually doing a great job. Slowing down songs is real key to learn and speeding it up slowly as you learn the groove. What made me a good drummer was playing along with songs I enjoy and learning a crucial piece to break the plateu the next time I play. For a beginner, you're doing better than most intermediate drummers and with alot of practice, you'll definitely be a great player. My advice is try to let it flow naturally. Practice the groove until you're comfortable with adding different fills or accents. Keep good posture so you don't neck strain. Try to keep the beaters the same distance away from the head so it's even. But most important just have fun and learn as you go. You're on the right path, great job dude.

Tip that always helped me. Don’t worry about the snare hits at first. Get the hihat/cymbal/ride part tight with the kick part then add the snare. Stoked to watch you grow and it’s awesome how you stepped out of your comfort zone to learn. 👏
