Allow me to share my little 8 string tone discovery... I heard that some metalcore guys would use the neck EMG (85) in place of the 81 for a tighter, punchier, "stringier" rhythm tone. I got a set of DiMarzio D-activator 8s to replace the stock pickups in my Jackson Dinky 8 string (X series multiscale, amazing value BTW) and the Dact bridge was a bit too buzzy and high output for me. I wasn't cool enough to get a Lundgren M8 so I put the lower output Dact Neck in the bridge(it's inspired by EMG 85 sort of) and a PAF8 in the neck. Djont tones are sooo much chunkier and "stringy" as Ola mentions, allowing you to dial in less gain from the amp. But I think most would agree string gauge and picking attack is huge for these type of tones as well!!!
