Olatunji is a Trinidadian. He is a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago is a Caribbean island. The genre of music he is singing is called Soca music in Trinidad and Tobago. Soca music first started in Trinidad and Tobago by fusing African drums and rhythms with East Indian drums and rhythms. Soca music has evolved over the years to what is its present sound. We in the caribbean have African, East Indian, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Syrian and English ancestry. We are of many different races. We have different cultures, music, food, religions etc. We have a two day street parade in which hundreds of thousands of people parade in costumes and dance to soca music and steelpan or steel drum music. The steel pan or steel drum was also invented in Trinidad and Tobago. It is actually our national instrument. So it is a fair and innocent to assume that Olatunji is a Nigerian because of his African name, his African ancestry and because soca music sounds similar to Nigerian music. It sounds similar because some of our ancestors came from the Mother Land, Africa, hundreds of years ago during slavery. Let us celebrate the long journey this genre has made and just enjoy and appreciate this feel-good music of love, peace, joy and good vibes.

well thats half right. Caribbean people are displaced PEOPLE. half trinidad is indian and the other half that are african about a quarter are mixed with many other races. cant claim one without the other which is why many of us say we are trini first. as a dougla i am just as much afrian as my mom, as i am indian like my dad. where then was i displaced from? i love both cultures but they are not mines to claim exclusively. i am born a Trini. soca is Trini so i claim that my culture as we know it isnt just african based. maybe this one song but definitely not the entire genre

Ladies and gentlemen, the purpose of the comments section is to say whatever you want regarding the video. You can say good and you can say bad...you have that right to do so. People, please understand this and try not to create a silly battle of words over a song, which is supposed to have the sole purpose of radiating the complete opposite vibe. Individuals are meant to have their own opinion. Individualism is something that some say the West Indies lacks. Don't prove that correct.

+Aminta Seye Almost EVERY musical genre from the North/central/south america that gets your hips moving has African origins. Salsa, Bachatta, Merengue, Soca, Reggae, Dancehall. This song is a hybrid. I'm Trini and I love soca, reggae, and african music. All genre of caribbean music, much like food, have roots in Africa. This connection is all we have left of our heritage, family, and legacy that were stolen from us. Let us embrace this type of music as a glue to help us feel connected to one another. It hurts me when I think of the family I lost and never had a chance to know hundreds of years ago. Who knows, some of us on this thread may even be related.

Shame that too many of us in the Caribbean countries have completely sold out to colonial mentality of anti-African. No wonder we still borrow from the Chinese and the Indians. When are we going to join our fellow Africans so we can be proud of our African heritage. We don't want to be a slave forever to the system

My Caribbean people! You guys don't have to distance ya self from Africans, we're family! Most of our ancestors and roots are African ! This isn't for everybody , but it's for the people that think African and Caribbean are 2 different tings cause they're really not.

Reading all these comments with people fighting back and forth as to the origin of the artist. The problem lies with black people always fighting against each other and tracing our roots shows we are all from the same place. We maybe from a different Island/country and possess different cultures and views but we are all the same. No one is more superior than the other, and we should be celebrating and accepting each other's culture. Just enjoy the song and pass the bullshit already! Get a grip!
