Yes, Native Americans do know honor, my best friend is a Lakota spirit warrior, who helped me and my dying mother, he was more than an anonymous neighbor. Having ancestors here from colonial times, a few of them had married Cherokee and Shawnee people in the time of this story.

Hey, Ola! This is my second favorite film of all time! Michael Mann's direction is kinetic and immersive. His compositions are painterly. Dante Spinotti's cinematography is atmospheric and lush using mostly natural light sources. The score by Trevor Jones is rousing and sweeping. The screenplay by Mann himself and Christopher Crowe bristles with authenticity, intelligence and ferocity! The action is phenomenal and inventive including a canoe chase! The period detail is assiduous. Colonial America feels rough-hewn and primeval. The chemistry between Madeleine Stowe and Daniel Day-Lewis is electric! The cast is uniformly excellent. Chingachgook, played by Native American activist Russell Means, has a terrific speech at the end of the Director's Cut where he laments being the last of his tribe. He goes on to say that one day his white son, Nathaniel, will also be the last of his kind, a frontiersman, as civilization pushes westward bending the natural world to its will. This is based on James Fenimore Cooper's frontier classic "The Last of the Mohicans" written in 1826 but bears little resemblance to the details of the novel. Cooper wrote a pentalogy of stories about Day-Lewis' character, Nathaniel Bumppo, who went by several names including Deerslayer, Hawkeye, La Longue Carabine, Pathfinder, Leatherstocking and The Trapper. The stories chronicle his life from 1740-1806. "Mohicans" is the second tale chronologically. The French and Indian War was the North American theater of the first global war, The Seven Years' War, from 1756-1763. Battles raged in Eastern colonial North America, the Caribbean, the Trans-Atlantic, Europe and the Far East between England, France, Spain and Prussia. George Washington's military exploits occurred in this war which is one of the reasons he was chosen to lead the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The attack on Fort William Henry and the ensuing massacre are real events. The callous and condescending treatment of the colonials by the British officers show the first stirrings of colonial resentment of the British crown which would ultimately erupt in The Revolutionary War. "Justice...if that is justice, then the sooner French guns blow the English army out of America, the better it will be for the people here!" "Cora, you do not know what you are saying!" "I know exactly what I'm saying! And, if it is sedition, then I am guilty of sedition, too!" Native American tribes in North America allied with different colonial powers. Magua is able to infiltrate the British ranks as a guide because the Brits can't tell the indigenous tribes apart. French General Montcalm, a real historical figure, made it a point to acculturate himself to his indigenous allies and show respect to their people in order to secure a loyal bond. Nathaniel advised Cora to remain close to her father and the British officers because the French officers would afford them protection as fellow aristocrats. The enlisted man was considered an unwashed peasant good for cannon fodder. Lol.

From the Sachem's last words, to Magua hitting the rock is eight-some minutes of mastercraft film making, told entirely in action and facial expressions, and the music of "The Gael" carries you along through all of it.

Fun fact: the reason Hawkeye is so good at aiming also has to do with his gun being a rifle. Rifled barrels make the ball spin and stay accurate. Soldiers were issued muskets which are smoothbore and much less accurate. They relied on multiple soldiers firing in a line to do basically what an automatic rifle would do nowadays. An accurate shot is better than a wall of bullets when you're in the woods. Private individuals could also save on lead and powder by not having to use as much because their rifles were accurate.

Thanks for the info. I checked for Rifled barrels in Wikipedia.Got the idea but not the entire Physics/ Aerodynamics it is based on. Fun fact is t the beginning of every James Bond movie they show James Bond in a circle with those helical lines. I did not understand the purpose but thought it to be a camera shutter and used just to look cool. I stand corrected. These are the helical grooves aka rifling of the barrel. So thanks very much. Regards,

@@priyamd4759 I thought it was a camera for a long time too. Spin conserves momentum while balancing the projectile along the axis of the spin which is also where the barrel is pointing, so a spinning rifled projectile stays on course longer and is thus more accurate at greater distances. A sniper rifle with a smooth bore would be as effective as a muzzle loader and with the same range. The rifling makes that difference so great.

The French and Indian War. France and England were fighting against each other to own North America. They twisted the natives of the continent to help fight along with them. The war lasted several years.

"No! You stay alive! [✂] You survive! You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you! No matter how long it takes, no matter how far. I will find you!" Fun Fact: The shoot employed more than 900 American Indians from all over the United States, mostly from the Cherokee tribes. Wes Studi claimed in a 1996 interview that he and several of the other actors in the film spoke their lines in their own languages. Location Location Fact: Michael Mann decided to shoot the film in North Carolina instead of New York partly because he felt that the woods there looked more like the old-growth forests of the Adirondacks, which still show evidence of logging during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of the scenes were shot at Biltmore, George Vanderbilt's North Carolina estate, with a forest that was carefully planned and planted about 100 years ago. Out Of Control Fact: By most accounts, each scene took at least 20 takes. Concerned about the growing cost, 20th Century Fox sent a representative to the set who did nothing but stand behind Michael Mann and forced him to move on. Many long nights were spent filming the siege scenes. Loudspeakers were installed around the battlefield and fort so directions could easily be given to the hundreds of cast and crew. One night after many long hours, director Michael Mann shouted "What's that orange light? Turn out that orange light!" over the speakers. After a pause, another voice said "That's the SUN, Michael." over the same speakers.

The story is based on Daniel Boone's life, when his daughter and 2 others were kidnapped by natives and he had to track them through the woods and rescued them many miles from the place they were kidnapped. The massacre was not initiated by Montcalm. The natives were not paid soldiers, they worked on the promise of captured guns, clothes and goods, and prisoners that they could adopt into their tribes, or ransom to the English, or sell as slaves to the French. Montcalm used the native warriors and then made a deal with the English where the natives got almost nothing for all the work with the siege. Montcalm then added insult to injury by having a party with the English enemies not his native allies. The natives decided to take their pay, so started the massacre. Though it wasn't as bad as portrayed in the movie. The column of people pretty much let the natives rob them, so most of the gruesome stuff had to do with the natives killing wounded soldiers in the hospital and the natives digging up dead bodies to scalp and rob.

1. You know, if you like Georgian fashion, *you* could do something about that. 2. The historical background of the events of the movie are thus: In 1754, both the British and the French had colonies in North America, and hostilities broke out between them. Although native Americans fought on both sides, it is traditionally called the French and Indian War. The siege of Ft. William Henry occurred in 1757, resulting in a victory for the French led by Montacalm over the British defenders led by Munro. After the surrender, the British column was attacked by French colonials and native Americans allied to the French resulting in the "Ft. William Henry Massacre." The British column was nearly defenseless since the British were required to surrender their ammunition as a part of the surrender, and many were captured. It is debatable whether Montcalm knew of, endorsed or ordered these attacks. Cooper's novel, and therefore the movie, takes place around this siege. In reality, Munro had two sons and a daughter - not two daughters, and he survived the massacre. 3. In Europe, the French and Indian War is considered to be a prelude to the Seven-Years War between coalitions led by Great Britain and France, and so it officially ended in 1763. However, fighting on the American continent had more or less ended in 1760 after the British, led by Wolfe, successfully besieged Quebec, which was being defended by Montcalm. The surrender of Quebec essentially resulted in the British conquest of New France. The war is a very important part of American history. It is not only the war in which George Washington first got military experience, but the aftermath of the war sowed the seeds for the American Revolution. Britain started to tax their American colonies after the war. Previously, the colonies were sort of treated with "benign neglect," so these taxes were new to the colonials. As Britain saw it, British regular troops were deployed in large numbers to protect the British colonials, and therefore the latter out to help pay for the war. As the Americans saw it, they had been of critical help to Great Britain in preserving and expanding her empire in North America, so taxing them to pay for it seemed like no good deed going unpunished. This dispute over taxes eventually led to the American colonies declaring independence in 1776, and gaining said independence in 1783. However, the northern colonies, including those that were formerly part of New France did not join the thirteen in rebellion, and eventually, those colonies became the Dominion of Canada.
