My grandfather talked about " Christmas Guns".. iron pipes loaded with black powder only, just for noise. A single big log was set on fire as part of Christmas, big enough to last a while. I heard never kill a cricket or ladybug. If one gets in the house, take it outside and let it go. My grandfather made star decorations out of larger tin can lids. My grandmother made little cloth bags out of scrap fabric for smaller Christmas gifts. I guess there's tons of Christmas traditions out there....thanks for keeping a few of them going....

Once when I was a kid I slipped out to the barn at midnight on Christmas eve ... The horses and cattle all looked at me, but said nary a word. I was truly disappointed.

When I was a little boy, we did a lot of this may decorations out of popcorn, grape paper powder paper. I got an apple orange and some nuts and my own box to keep my valuables in. It was made out of a cigar box wrapped in turquoise satin painted silver with crushed chicken egg shells. I still have it.

There's an old old Russian tradition of putting straw under the table on Christmas Eve to represent the manager,and coins are hidden in the straw. Christmas morning the kids would scramble through the straw to find the coins.

What a beautiful video on Christmas traditions 😊..me and my brother use to love when mama n daddy would go town bout dark..we be in the back seat..i get by one door and him the other.. and we would have a game.. he'd count on his side houses that had Christmas trees lit up or lights outside burning and I'd count on my side.. whoever got the most won 😅..it was fun... so many ole traditions have passed away nowadays.. I remember hanging out stockings and getting oranges or little tangerines and tiny boxes raisins..candy canes.. and if we got two gifts under the tree.. just happy.. watching Charlie Brown and the Grinch was the best Christmas cartoons 😊.. decorating pine cones to hang on the tree I enjoyed then..thank u for sharing and a Merry Christmas to u and your family, friends and everyone here 😊..many blessings to y'all..

Wow. I've been doing a lot of research on my ancestors and what their solstice traditions were, and a bunch of them were brought over to Appalachia for me to learn about a little closer to home (listening in from California). It sure seems like Yule was the origin for both modern Christmas and Halloween rituals in the old country. Makes sense it would be a little spooky on the longest nights of the year.

When my mother died, her traditions died with her. She was from North Carolina. There towards the end of her life, my mother preached that Christmas was a Pagan Holiday. She even told us that real Christmas was on January 6th. Cancer killed her at the age of 92 in 2010. Christmas for me never was the same after 1962. We moved to California in 1963. I was 15 years old. I try to stay home on the Holidays (unless I have to work). Happy Holidays to you and Merry Christmas.
