It was the end of day sign off. In the modern day there is no end of day so no sign off. I think the CBC might still do it in the morning but I am not usually watching that early.

I remember this rendition of O Canada being played when CBC 990AM in Winnipeg was ending its broadcast day. I ran across this radio station by accident as a kid in central Kansas at night. That was the first time I heard a foreign national anthem being played. This definitely my favorite rendition of their national anthem.

Same thing here, in northeast Missouri. We had a local, must have been daytime only station on 990. Hearing this anthem at 1 AM was pretty fascinating at the time.

@@stevenlewis7921 For me, I'd get bleed-in from a station at 980/990 in Oklahoma City. I think that station is a clear channel. Made listening to CBC a challenge at night. I occassionally got the CBC as early as 8:30-9:00 PM (rarely at 7 PM). Most of the time, it was around 10-10:30 PM I could pick it up on my old Multiplex Stereo (had a record player and an 8-track player).

When you were a young teen growing up in the 70s/80s with only 2 channels on the tv (we had no cable..lived in a very rural area) CBC and CTV...Seeing this come up was actually depressing as it represented NO MORE TV VIEWING FOR THE REST OF THE NIGHT TIL THE NEXT MORNING..I would actually just stare at the test pattern that would follow this national anthem sign off...

I am just seeing this now but my sentiments were EXACTLY the same!!!! Even though I lived in Toronto and had CHCH from Hamilton and 3 American channels, there was always that dreaded sinking feeling when the anthem or God Save the Queen played! You knew it was the end. I too stared sadly at the test pattern with its single tone. Even more depressing was the static that followed it. Ahhh, nostalgia!

@Hershels rts We did not even have a VCR, so there was truly nothing to watch after the 2 channels went off the air. SOMETIMES we might be able to get some very snowy channel late at night if we were lucky. All depended on what the old tv antennae was able to pick up that particular night.

I'm an American (also a Finn) and I really don't have a say in this issue. It would be unfair for me to make a decision in this, since Canada isn't the place I call my home. All I can say is that if that is you opinion, fight for it. I know there are some Canadians who still prefer the original flag and anthem, so there is still a bit of controversy with it.
