The Soho mint was in Handsworth Birmingham not London, owned by Matthew Boulton using steam power provided by James Watt. The engraver was Conrad Heinrich Kuchler and the order was for 45 tons, yielding 720,000 coins.

The cartwheel pennies are among the first coins produced with steam presses. I believe the Soho Mint evolved into the Heaton Mint or Birmingham Mint. Are the private tokens you're talking about Conder tokens?
@SilverLimey796 жыл бұрын
There were various tokens minted by private institutions and banks. An interesting time for coinage back then
@MrMonkeySwag966 жыл бұрын
@@SilverLimey79 I know, but are those tokens classified as Conder tokens?

@@MrMonkeySwag96 both yes and no. Private tokens were released however there is no clarification on what is condor and normal tokens.

I'm an expat living in Florida and I'm just going through my late husband's enormous coin collection. Discovered he had two 1797 cartwheels. I couldn't understand why one was thicker than the other. After research and finding your site, I think one must be a 1d. cartwheel and the other a 2d cartwheel. Fascinating
