Definitely. Portishead is rather unique in the genre. There's of course some imitator's, but the only trip hop group that comes even close to Portishead would be 21 Hertz album, "Ocean of Time"

the drums sound sampled, but they are actually recorded then pressed on to vinyl then the vinyl has been worn and distressed then sampled back into the track. A lot of work went into making the drums sound lo-fi, and i think it pays off.

Their first two albums were the soundtrack to my life from 1994 to 1998. Not a single song on there I didn't love. Unbelievable. They made the music that didn't quite exist when it came out. And I loved it. Hip hop influences, 50s sci-fi movie samples, Beth on vocals. They mastered their sound. Incredibly intense, beautiful downtempo bliss.

I agree with every word of this. I'd add one thing: don't ignore the third album ("Third"). Too many people did, including me at the time; and when I listen to it now I think it's every bit as good as the other two.

I remember hearing Dummy for the first time, a buddy of mine played it for me. I was so blown away I went out and bought it, phenomenal album. One of my favorite band of all time. Beth Gibbons is such a great singer, her voice always gives me the chills. Beth Gibbons doesn’t do the sort of over the top, Hers is an ache rather than a wrenching pain. You don’t get a shotgun blast of pain to the face, rather you feel the pain pulling at you from underneath. It’s so much more subtle and less dramatic. Nobody can do this quite like she can. Dummy feels like music that was always waiting patiently to exist but needed someone to open a door to it. It's really hard to describe how it feels... maybe "otherworldly" comes close, but maybe there's simply no word for it. A number of very talented people came together at the right time, and something inexplicable and beautiful was born. It never ages. It's always reliably, steadfastly perfect, every time I listen.

It is said Portis-head, no 'sh'. Totally forgivable! To bring this amazing band into your world you can call them whatever you want! Her voice is descended from angels - they are considered one of - if not the - pioneering band of the genre from the 90's "Trip Hop." It is characterized by an intentional lo-fi vibe, melding rock/soul with a dash of electronica and hip hop. A truly classic near perfect album of the decade "Dummy" (one of those rare occasional albums with zero weak tracks) is where this song is from. A super fun song to check out is "Sour Times" but I think you'd have a blast breaking down "Biscuit." An A+ band from an A+ musical era, and influenced so much of music to come. Their live set - "Live at Roseland Ballroom" is legendary and amazing and reacted to without any issues elsewhere so also a great way to see them - with a full orchestra, turntables - just an epic performance. Man you make my day randomly all the time with some of the unexpected groups and songs you do. Sincere gratitude. This one got me to SUB.

I love Portishead (and trip hop in general) so that's awesome that you checked this out. Would recommend "Glory Box" as another Portishead track. As a complete out of the blue comment, Beth Gibbons (the singer from Portishead) recently did the vocals on Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. I think the video might be available online. It's worth checking out.

i miss the holy trifecta of Portishead, Massive Attack, and Tricky during the mid 90's. they defined and perfected trip-hop, a genre that no longer really exists in as pure of a form as you hear it at that time... yet whose influences we see all around us.

This song was in fact named after the Fender Rhodes. The whole album has such a unique way it was composed and produced. They even physically damaged vinyl to get a scratchy effect and then recorded it on tape to get a scratchy feel to the music. Very timeless. You should do more of their music

I'm still here! Love this group deeply and I adore when they get some time in the spotlight. They dislike the "trip hop" box/labeling they were placed in but they're my favorite from that leaning by a mile. They're perfectionists and as such have only managed to release 3 albums despite no break-up. Still, it's left us with a sadly brief but brilliant catalogue of music that I am always down to return to. Hope you jump onto some of their other tracks eventually - my fav is "Biscuit" from this same album, it has a killer dark/moody vibe. Keep doin' what you're doin', we appreciate you!

Their first two albums were phenomenal with Dummy leading the way. For a good mix of the various sounds check out the tracks "Glory Box", "Humming" and "Western Eyes", I think you would also be interested in seeing the live performance at Roseland NYC, and while the whole concert is amazing, the highlights have to be this song "Roads" and "Glory Box", also of note is that the live performance was accompanied by a New York Philharmonic which just adds to the perfection. Another group you should really check out is fellow brit band Massive Attack in particular "Dissolved Girl", "Black Milk" and "Group Four", they along with Portishead were the undisputed kings and queens of the 90's and early 2000's sub-genre known as Trip Hop! Two groups that don't get nearly the love they deserve especially on this side of the pond, and yet have been incredibly influential and are both very well known to musicians inside the industry.

Portishead is one of my favorites from the 90's. Considering they recorded a concert with a symphony orchestra, I would love to see you do something like strangers or wandering star from that live performance. Portishead's melodic, low fi sound, that heavenly jazzy voice (which you will appreciate even more considering she smokes cigarettes during the set), and the full sound of the strings and horns mixing with hip hop scratches. This was a great song by Portishead, but it doesn't really capture their iconic sound in my opinion.

It's exactly a fender Rhodes which is where more relatable title "roads" came from : ) good catch bud 🤙 bands, the members, influence. janis Joplin, in r&b, soul, hip hop sound, singing in jazzy manner by Beth gibbons lots of space it's gorgeous, glory box is their seminal masterpiece for me. Just to answer your question, it's pronounced portis-head. It's actually the name of the village where the band members are from. I'd like to recommend a couple other songs. Honestly I would've recommended "Mysterons" from this album. But their first album isn't their most accomplished in my opinion. I'd recommend "Humming" from their second (self-titled) album. The thing about Portishead to remember is that even though almost everything sounds like it was sampled, from their second album on they barely used any samples at all. They used more samples on their first album but even on that album they were pressing recordings of their own music to vinyl to use as samples. But their second album only uses samples on two songs. Everything else was made to sound like samples. I'd also recommend "Silence" from their third album. As a fellow composer I make these recommendations with the fact that you're a composer in mind.

You're right, very 70s inspired, it's called Trip Hop.90s. And live they have on top of the band an orchestra on stage so it's strings you are hearing here. On other tracks they also have some woodwinds and brass as well. The other one I love from them is Glory Box! I can just float away to them.
