I did one of these on a 1960 Series 2 (?) in 1971. (Yes I was a young lad) in those days you took the seats out and the gearbox cover from inside the cab. The gearbox (it was heavy) was dragged out of the cab. The mainshaft bearing in the box had collapsed due to the leaky box (no silicone in those days...until British Leyland invented it !) Bellhousing off and the bearing found....in bits. So, after a new bearing and first gear replaced (gear badly chipped) the whole thing put back together through the cab and fastened up with my open end spanners and box spanner set ! And, then home for left overs from Christmas dinner as the refit was done on Boxing Day 1971.....:+(

Good morning Baz 😊 I’ve never seen you so dirty in any of your videos I’ve watched lol 😂 I’m only a driveway mechanic servicing my own car 🚙 Your videos are a real pleasure to watch especially with your sense of humour and technical knowledge 👍🏻

Brought back memories this one as I used to work at a Land Rover agents in the late 80's. I don't know whether you done a old series 3 but you had to take the floor and seat bases out, which every bolt was usually seized and needed drilling out. Then you had to manhandle the box out through the cab, only 2 days work if you were lucky. It wasn't necessary to take the rear prop off in my day just two screws and the hand brake drum slid over the prop. Keep up the good work.

Hi Baz, I have done many of these in the past we have a fleet of them and done more clutches on these than you can shake a stick at and as a result I've found a few short cuts along the way, instead of disconnecting the hand brake cable by the seat I take the back plate off the back of the transfer box, after you've removed the drum there's four bolts, just whizz them out and tie the back plate up under the chassis, (the hole in the back plate is big enough to to clear the output flange) as for the cat they can be a right pain to get out, if you follow the down pipe to the exhaust there's a straight piece of pipe (about 8 inches or so) that runs along side of the chassis, I get a hack saw and cut it thus leaving the cat in place, on reassembly get a heavy duty 60mm joiner and paste and reconnect (I've done this on all our defenders and not one of them has leaked or come off), now i get that customers might be a bit sniffy about cutting up their exhaust but the time it saves plus broken studs etc makes the job so much quicker, we didn't see how you actually got the box out (3 or 4 lads?), in one of the landrover manuals it gives a diagram of how to make an adaptor (with balance point) to fit on a transmission jack and get the whole thing out in one go and safely, (not to be confused with the adaptor for removing the transfer box on it's own), of course it depends on how many you are likely to do as to whether it'd be worthwhile to make...I hope this hasn't come over as a bit know it all but this is my experience and hope it helps, your videos have undoubtedly helped us. Thanks...

As an army vehicle mechanic changed dozens of clutches on series 3 LRovers ....very often on exercise in woods with it hissing down or freezing in depth of a German winter ! Amazingly the general design and repair sequence hasn't changed in over 40 years. Great video

The beauty of the old military defender was the floor plates and tunnel unscrewed ,so access was good you could strap the box and slide it back was a workshop crane

We break these & Discos for parts, as well as repairing them - so the yokes we're working on are generally total sheds. This one doesn't look much better on the cleanliness front. You have my sympathies, Baz.

Baz, as a Landy nut I always give the owner the oppertunity to have the gearbag split from the transfer box to check and lubricate the spline "bodge" adaptor between the them. 👍

Good job Baz! The old Nissan Patrol had a transmission brake too, brings me back, heavy box too. I never liked the transmission brake because when its on, it will fail if you jack up one wheel, Try changing a wheel on a car with a transmission handbrake, you think it wont roll cause you have the handbrake on.....Same for an automatic thats just left in Park! if you know you know! if you dont you could be in for an accident! On the landrover/ Patrol, brake locks the prop, prop holds the diff, diff holds the wheels, jack one up and the diff releases the wheel with the most resistance.... the one on the ground!!!

If you don't know what your doing with them could end in a spot of bother
@stephenwalker68233 ай бұрын
As my Land Rover is a Series 2A and has selectable 4-wheel drive, with no centre diff., simply selecting 4WD and locking the free-wheeling hubs will stop it rolling during a wheel change. It'd need one wheel at each end jacking up to roll.
@tomcurran653 ай бұрын
@@stephenwalker6823 absolutely, but for the uninitiated no one would know that you must put it in 4wd to jack up a back wheel. The other solution is wheel chocks or a suitable substitute. Very few people know that the parking brake is on the rear wheels only.... except it's only on the front wheels of a Citroen C5 and some Saab's I think 🤔. I suppose the message is be careful when jacking up a vehicle 👍

Used to do loads of 4x4 clutches, Toyotas, land rovers, nissans etc. I've lived in an agricultural area of Spain for the last 16 years and 4x4s are a must for the farmers around here. The underneath of the vehicles were always a nightmare, years of caked on mud and animal shit! Big poking stick to remove it all first 🤢
