Thanks for this video Laurie. In its day I don't recall as many corrugations but it was rocky. It was graded regularly but the pot holes were the main problem. It was certainly much wider back in the 1970's. Nature has reclaimed a lot of it.

It's my pleasure Michael. That video was done with my son when we did the Trans Australia Railway line trip. Brett filmed his version of the trip, which we dragged out and worked on a few weeks ago. You might enjoy his channel as well. www.youtube.com/@brettkibblewhite6466/videos Cheers, Laurie.

Crikey - I have no idea why, but I am sitting here at the PC and the Ivy Tanks popped into my head, so I googled it and up popped your video. For some reason, I am disappointed that there is nothing left left but a chimney stack, perhaps I expected more. The actually water tanks were on the right hand side of the road (heading East). I was only there once (for about one hour) and it was in December 1969, but it sticks in brain - there was nothing memorable about it, apart from it was in the middle of nowhere (and bizarrely, I also remember drinking a can of red creaming soda that we bought there) . Oh, by the way, we were driving a brand new HR Holden sedan. Thanks for the memories...

G'day Bing, sorry I failed to respond to this at that time. Yep, not a lot left there, but plenty of wrecks to keep you amused. Thanks for commenting and sharing your memories. Cheers, Laurie

Travelled this in the early 70's in a VW Beetle before the black top was finished. The fully packed Beetle with 3 of us onboard just easily glided over the top at 50 to 60 mph over the or so 300 miles of this section. Ivy tanks winding section was down to 40mph. worst problem as the concrete lip on cattle grids which was sometimes 4 to 6 inches which yo had to crawl over. Passed every other car on the road without any difficulty including Ford Falcon 6's and v8's, Holdens 6's and V8's , Chevrolet v8's.

Those old Vee Dubs were monsters on the old Redex Trials .. big diameter wheels, air cooled motor with weight over the back wheels.
@Rob-fx2dw
@Rob-fx2dw 2 жыл бұрын
@@lauriekibblewhite Their air cooled motor allowed excess heat to be dissipated in the hot summer conditions because the difference between radiated heat from the engine fins and the ambient summer air temperature is greater than the difference of water cooled radiators and the hot ambient temperature. Simple physics of temperature differential. Great documentary of yours by the way.

I first crossed to Kalgoorlie in 1968 in a FJ Holden that cost me $70. Lots of corrugations and deep pot holes covered by bull dust a foot deep. The dirt finished at Madura at the time. I was only 17 at the time so it was quite an adventure.

My first crossing was not long after it had been completely sealed. You wont get a car for $70 these days. Fun times. Cheers, Laurie.

Great video Laurie, the road was narrow in parts, the big semis just put themselves in the middle and didn't move. I reckon one time on my bike, if I put my elbow out I would have hit it. Well done.

Thanks Desmond. My first trip across was just after the bitumen had been finished. Explored a bit of it since then though. But Western Queensland on the Development Roads is where they still sit in the middle, and you either head bush or pull off and wait your turn. Thanks for dropping in, cheers, Laurie.

You can hear the car rattling to death, and his teeth chattering as he tries to speak, those roads are tough, and brutal on cars and occupants, the corrugations are merciless - great vid though - Thanks for posting

Why are the cars so damaged and mutilated?
@lauriekibblewhite
@lauriekibblewhite Жыл бұрын
G'day Harry. The highway wasn't sealed until 1976, and prior to that many vehicles either expired or were damaged in accidents. They would then be towed to the odd roadhouse along the route, where they would be either repaired, or retired 😁 There are graveyards at Ivy Tank, and the big one at Koonalda Homestead. The road was re-aligned, and ran about 14 kms closer to the coast, and the businesses along the old route basically folded up when the new highway was opened, because the traffic flow stopped. Cheers, Laurie.
