This is exactly how you make scalloped potatoes. It's nice to know someone knows the difference between scalloped potatoes (which has no cheese in it), and au gratin potatoes (which does have cheese). I come from an old french/German background and we made both. Our scalloped potatoes were made exactly like the way you made it. We put a layer of thin sliced onions in between the layers. Love this recipe.

exactly as my mom taught me, except for half and half. Later in her life she started making them with evaporated milk and that was amazing.

Thanks Diana..... FINALLY and Old school potato bake that has not been MURDERED with Cheese.... I put some powdered French onion soup in mine, dont over do it. For all you Aussies out there or any one not American...... As best as I can work out Half and half is 50% cream and 50% NORMAL milk..... Happy cooking

Exactly. Authenitic scalloped potatoes - the moment you add cheese, etc they are NOT Scalloped Potatoes but Au-gratin. Big Difference. Two different dishes, but most people are oblivious to this.

@MultiStu669 жыл бұрын
I agree -scalloped potatoes the traditional way have no cheese and they most certainly do not come freeze dried in a box with powder - keep traditions going. Well done - but in order to avoid clumpy flour - mix milk or half and half with flour prior to pouring on potatoes - plus do a layer of potatoes then a layer of mix for more even distribution.. Great recipe!

Yes to no cheese. No cream, either. I’m not sure about how much butter. Not every dish on the table has to smothered in dairy fat. If you don’t like the taste of potatoes, make something else.

@David Hall Since you replied to me, I thought that I'd share that I did make this tonight and did use half and half and like my mom, flour. I should have used canned milk but didn't think of it. Next time. The half and half was good but canned milk is better. Also, did you know that the canned milk is not the same flavor of yesteryear BUT...the ORGANIC canned milk is exactly like when we were kids, it has the thickness and a slight darker color than regular (watery) canned milk. If you have not tried the organic Carnation canned milk, you are missing out on a whole lot of flavor.

Dianne and this beautiful American favorite, is classically authentic. No need to put all kinds of other ingredients, unless its the main dish. This is perfect as a side dish, especially to a NY strip roast. only one criticism, the background salsa music is a bit annoying...

This IS the way our grandmother's made them, our mothers and hopefully now a new generation will learn to cook real food and not just reheat and make food filled with ingredients you can not pronounce from boxes and jars (that is not cooking.) Thanks for sharing a tradition

Took more time for mine. At least an hour covered and then 40 minutes uncovered; Like she says, this takes time and depends. Not something you want to make if you need quickly, but so comforting. I see so many recipes on You-Tube for "Scalloped Potatoes" but they are not. The moment you add any cheese they are Au-gratin Potatoes not scalloped! This recipe is comforting and classic.
