This is a film from another time (1926), made by a norwegian, and may be considered a bit racist in it's form. Remember, the world has evolved much since then, both the way of life for these people, and also how the world sees indigenous people.
These inuit are called tunumiit.

In our language grammar, and I suppose it is the same for other regions in the arctic, the correct way of using the word Inuit is Inuit which doesn't need a 's' and is already plural. Inuk means one person, Inuuk means two and Inuit is three or more.

Thankful for Knud Rasmmusen, and his undying love for exploratory knowledge, truth, and respect for those that relayed the ancient stories to him when no one really cared one way or the other. This footage is absolutely priceless.

Look how vibrant and happy they were! I love the dancing! They had a tight community and a cherished identity, sadly it will probably never be the same.. Ethnocide, colonization and trauma has done its toll. The Inuit identity and way of life was forged in that environment for centuries, and when you take that away from them and implement the Western lifestyle (which is not suitable for that area), it can only lead to depression and alcoholism. It’s the same story all around the globe..

It was very interesting to watch this high quality video of Eskimo life in Greenland that is about ninety years old. One can only respect the skills of survival and crafts that they have developed to live in this brutal climate. The hardships they endure is written on their faces. I saw and heard no racists comment or actions, the term is vastly over used, movie was just fine.

In our history, some of our ancestors move to the east, followed whales, cross over Aleutian Islands, because these island don't freeze in winter time, due to volcano actions in ring of fire. We all look same. If any Inuit goes to Siberia, no one can tell who is inuit and who is Siberian.

What a wonderful historic record. When I saw the lady breastfeeding it made me remember my breastfeeding my 5 including twins. it made me feel at heart we are all the same and motherhood does not change nor our love for our babies. We are all as one.

Fascinating. As you can see, the people are still living in summer tents - the people of West Greenland were already living more westernised by that time.

Hello from USA, I am very interested in exploring Ice and glaciers north of Greenland In the summertime June/July as I know it will be warmest with the most sunlight. Do native Thule Inuits have sailing vessels to explore these channels and northern arcitc circle, as dogsledding wont get too far in summer months. Much love from USA thanks

The description says it may be considered racist...how!? It's a part of history! It's real life footage of how the Inuits lived back then! It's no more offensive than native american footage, or footage of Trafalgar Square or New York city. It's valuable historical material that isn't to be tampered with or changed because some people might get offended.
@MrLockertsen
@MrLockertsen 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's just sort of a disclaimer. I actually wrote that mostly because of the text-boards in between that are in norwegian, not the actual footage. The writer did NOT think these inuits were equal to him, and they are somewhat "disrespectful"...

Naja Abelsen I worked there (Sisimiut & Nuuk, Kalaallit Nunaat) for quite some time and I can attest to their friendliness. I remember fishing together and playing football (the original, not the American) at midnight with -12C. Wonderful people and wonderful places. Still I never called them eskimos, I considered it disrespectful. I called them Greenlanders or Inuits, though I never learned how to call them in their native tongue. Now, don't get me wrong but you guys can really drink... hehehe. Best regards...
