@@Sherpas_vanlife As a Quadriplegic that uses ramps a lot, the ramp on the van is too steep. Extend the ramp longer and lower where you set it on the van. If you try to walk up it yourself, you'll see it's killer on the knees.
@pat_an466
@pat_an466 7 ай бұрын
@@TangentOmega I thought that, too. My idea was to have a sort of platform at the top, then an angle, so that the main length of the ramp extends down along the side of the van in a less steep length; or possibly as a series of shallow steps. Probably a pain to construct, though!

@@Sherpas_vanlife Put the ramp in between where the hinge of the door is that gap in between the van floor that extra 8 inches is giving him too much height to walk up the ramp easily enough

Loved the way he wagged his tail when he had at last managed to climb into the van, amazing! ♥️ At the age of 66, I feel exactly the same way when I manage to extract myself out of my daughter's very comfortable car and no, she doesn't give me a treat for my effort either!🤷

As a senior who has mobility challenges it's important to feel secure with each step. I think a longer step (body length) would offer Shepa more footing security. I identify completely. Thanks for trying to make his days as familiar as possible. Wish I had someone reassuring me with this new reality. Bless you for making him such a priority.

I had this same situation with my husky. Try this: put the ramp flat on the ground and guide him into walking onto the ramp with the treat. This way his paws get used to the feel of the ramp's texture and he gains confidence on it. Do it a few times flat on the ground, then you can raise the ramp into position. Sherpa will feel much better using it after that practice.

Thank you Jaime for caring and loving your aging fur baby!! What a wonderful world it would be if EVERYONE cared for aging animals and people!! You are AWESOME!!! Sherpa is so fortunate to have you as his dad!! It breaks my heart to read the way too many stories of heartless people who give their aging pets to shelters, just so they can get a new puppy or kitten!! Thanks again for all that you do for Sherpa!! ❤❤

I imagine all if not most dog owners care deeply for their geriatric dogs. My big lad is not only very old for a mastiff but is disabled as he has no hip socket on one side so literally has a dislocated hip. He physically can't jump. The trick for me was to buy an old Chrysler voyager and remove both back rows of seats. The door slides pen so there's a straight jump and it's much lower than that van so Agrippa could almost step in. He still preferred his carpet covered quarter pallet though. Whatever I can do for him, will be done. I have 11 dogs, most of which are in their middle to late teens. I'm not unique in caring for our old companions, even ones like my Agrippa who doesn't make me any money.
@judithpowers9772

@@PhyllisGlassup2TheBrim so good to hear that you love & care lovingly for your aging fur babies. Unfortunately I see far too many people who simply surrender their aging pets because “they get sick & I want something new” is just a few of the excuses I hear. It just breaks my heart to watch the expressions on these precious faces as the only family they know, just abandons them. It happens more than it should. I often wonder, if they treat their pets like this, how do they treat their aging family members?!? Thank you for showing your fur babies love & care no matter how old they may be. I encourage everyone to think of adopting/rescuing older fur babies when possible. They deserve to live out their lives knowing love & care in a forever home.🦮🐈‍⬛❤️

It took about two weeks of training for our old sheltie to learn to go up a ramp. We have two steps up to our outside deck and his hind legs were just two weak to make it up those steps. We carpeted the ramp with heavy duty outdoor grass carpeting and now he is a pro. Slow but it works if we stand close by for support. Just like you Jamie we have to keep trying things to aid our old boys or girls until we find the one that works. Good on Sherpa finding his favourite way to get into the van. You did a great job adjusting that step. Unfortunately, now, we have to lift our guy into the car. Just like Sherpa he loves his outings.

Hi Jamie, It's so great to see you being so patient with your boy!! Maybe you already tried this but if not have you tried walking Sherpa up the ramp by guiding him with a hand on each of his sides until he is in or out of your van just to build his confidence and feel that he's not going to fall off until he gets use to it. That's something that I had to do when my doggie got older because when they start to lose their vision and have joint pain they might need a little more help feeling secure doing new things like that at first. I hope that's a good suggestion. 😊

For my dogs, a longer step always worked better -- sticking out at least 60 cm (2 ft), so that there's room to stand on it with all four paws at the same time while facing the opening, and so feel safe before thinking about the next step up (makes getting out /down easier, too)

I can see that Dad is doing everything possible to make it easier for you to get into BigRed. Maybe the ramp is a bit too slippery and Sherpy is afraid of slipping. Jamie, his heart wants to be with you, but his body tells him no, know its hard to accept but he's at the point were laying in the grass and feeling the sun warm his old bones is a good day for him, been through this to many times in my life, your going to have to be selfless , at that age trying to balance himself in a moving vehicle is exhausting, been watching your channel for years and always got a chuckle watching sherpa, and the bond tou two have, so thanks for sharing that with us

I can understand why your wooden step worked best, it was the widest of all of them. He trusted it too because, as you say, he's used it inside the van. Well done on finding a solution that works for you both! 🤗🤗

I admit that I was one suggesting a ramp but this just proves that dogs have their own individual personalities and needs. Thank you, Jamie for meeting them, and beyond for dear, sweet Sherpa.

Hi Jaime, you might try having Sherpa get used to walking on the ramp with it on flat ground until he is used to using it and then maybe have a more gradual slant by hooking it to the step instead of all the way into the van. If you have already tried this, I apologize for missing that episode just ache to make it easier for precious Sherpa. God bless and thank you for loving him so much much much

When I introduced my elderly Aussie to the ramp, we started with it flat on the grass and practiced walking on it for lots of treats.His has a steeper slope to get into my car, but it also has carpet on it. I also use his harness for a bit of support if needed. But, it looks like you have it all figured out, Jamie. It's all about figuring out what works best for our pups.

Love how you are trying to make things easier for Sherpa! I will add to the others that suggest either, lowering the ramp some (our dog didn't like hers too steep) or making the step larger so he has more room when he jumps up, or down. We know Sherpa appreciates all you do for him! ❤

Watching this brought back a flood of memories to my 2 elderly Samoyed's father and son. I was in the back yard and the younger one came over and dropped his soggy old tennis ball and dropped it at my feet, and I picked it up and pegged it across the yard and he took 2 steps and looked back at me as if to say "I really want to chase the ball, but just can't anymore". It broke my heart and I realized it was time to make "the decision" and agonized over it for a week and finally decided it was time, they both had good long lives and now it was time to let them go and not feel any more pain and suffering. I hated to do it but I knew it was for the best. The final ride sucked because every time I turned on to Thunderbird Road, both of their tales would go down, and the ears went down at the same time. I was crying so hard as we pulled into the parking lot and they took us right back in. Rest well my friends, I will see you again.

Poor Sherpa, he was a bit confused with the ramp. Mom and I tried a ramp for our golden retriever but she didn’t like it. I believe the increase in elevation frightens them. Everyone knows you’ll move Heaven and earth to give Sherpa the best life possible. God bless you Jamie and Sherpa. Much love from Tennessee USA. 🥰🐾
