Depends which year 2009 to 2010 is the easiest and works with just display ports. 2011 upwards need thunderbolt 1 and 2 connectors to another mac ,pc that carries the same.

I supposed that your laptop have displayport output or mini displayport output. I have tried your situation pc 980 and connected to imac. I found the imac would go the default 2k . But if you want to change the imac resolution from 2k to 980p , it is ok. From google, Today's most common version (for video wall displays), DisplayPort 1.2, supports video resolutions of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels, at a refresh rate of 60 Hz. The official name for this resolution is by the way UHD, but the term 4K is often used as well.

I don't want to buy a new monitor , so I try to use old imac as a monitor , it works. it is because I check display port to mini display port is bidirectional. It needs a converter to convert hdmi to display port , ( remember display port (DP) to hdmi (H) this direction is ok when you connect to output tv or monitor) There is a way to solve the problem.
