Old Mill vs. Garfield’s Nightmare - Side by Side Full Ride POV - Kennywood Park - Dark Ride

Given that the Old Mill track is basically the same and it's more about the contents. Was curious to see what the side by side of the updated Old Mill vs. Garfield's Nightmare looks like. So I figured I would put it out to everyone. Even though everyone was happy to see Garfield go, do you feel that the new Old Mill lives up to the hype? The one thing about Garfield is that they certainly packed a ton into the ride whereas the new theme is more minimal. Give it a look and let me know your thoughts. I did my best to narrow it down as close to the start and end points as possible, however given the nature of the propulsion system of the ride, one of the videos falls behind a bit in the process. This is awesome, because it shows how different the two versions really are, and I think Garfield would have been fine if Kennywood would have taken better care of the ride and repainted it

Yeah it definitely provides a different perspective on each I feel. Also yes, Garfield May have been able to be preserved if they had updated it and made it better, it could have been done.

I do miss the big outdoor displays they had in the original ride during the two big loopbacks (the tipping outhouse, the skeleton band), but they wouldn't be dark during the day, of course. Reverting back to darkened transition passages is brilliant -- these are the moments that make it a true tunnel of love and an actual "dark" ride.

I think that is a lot of people’s beef with the new design is that those outdoor parts are not in there. I’ve seen that as the one complaint, but you are correct, the other reason why that was a popular ride pre-Garfield and will be again is because of the complete darkness.

Thanks for posting this! COVID impacted schedule and scope as you can probably imagine, but we think it's great that Kennywood remained committed to re-theming the ride this year. @Scarehouse... you guys failed. Why did you insist on glowing paint? This is just Garfields Revenge with Western theme. I was so happy to hear it was coming back until seeing your work. Try again, find vintage footage and bring back those elements. At least I have my memories of the best version.

I don’t know what the partnership was with Scarehouse and what elements they contributed to, I will say that the outdoor scene is definitely missing. I think the glow in the dark stuff they are using to constant the darkness of the ride but probably it was because Kennywood put some money into Glow in the Dark paint. Nostalgia is a powerful drug and there was no way this Old Mill was going to compete with one you or I grew up on.

@@TomWasHereOnKZbin I can understand that. Just disappointing when you see news that's being returned to its former state and then see it not even close. I just think the glowing paint is too pretty, cute or whatever to be included in a scare ride. It diminishes the overall look and feel.

I think Kennywood was stuck no matter what. They are trying to make a new version of an old ride. Same with remaking a movie that people love. It just doesn’t work. Rarely will it capture that same feeling you had when you were younger. The neon paint is not great, but I think they were trying to add some color to a darker ride. The ride is considerably darker than it was before so I think that was the mindset, but it’s not scary, I expected a scare element myself but there wasn’t any.

The Old Mill was way better in (2001/2002/2003) (pre Garfield’s Nightmare) I thought that the new one would provide some elements of nostalgia, but I consider it a bit of a disappointment now. The older version of the old mill may have been better than Garfield’s Nightmare, but Garfield’s Nightmare was way more entertaining than the new Old Mill (2021) This new old mill (compared to the 2002 one) has nothing too exciting or nostalgic to see except the train that reminds you of the old Gold Rusher’s ghost train, and the neon Color scheme from Garfield’s Nightmare. It has hardly any animatronics. The old mill in 2002 had a crazy amount of hilarious and/or horrifying animatronics. This 2021 “update” is essentially a cheapie/boring version of the classic old mill from before 2004.

It’s true, the new Old Mill isn’t the Old Mill and isn’t Garfield’s nightmare. They didn’t make it the classic Old Mill which upsets the traditionalists. They removed Garfield which upset some younger people who grew up with it. They tried to compromise which means that no one really likes it, it’s fine for what it is and fits the ride building theme better than Garfield but beyond that, there’s no substance.

This is true, it felt like more could have been done with it, I’m warming up to the old saloon piano music they have in there but beyond that, I had hoping for more, it is way better than Garfield though. Fits the ride, park and theme better.

@@TomWasHereOnKZbin I agree. I was definitely underwhelmed. With scarehouse involved I was expecting more. I think it's to dark in many places. I get it's a family ride and can't be to scare. Then again, some kids hate pitch black. But I was hoping for more movement or a scary part or 2.

Judy W. I went so far as to expect more of a scare element with Scarehouse involved, but as you mentioned it is a family ride so that may have been too much to ask. It’s definitely a lot darker dark ride and without the outside element that only adds to that. I think it’s good, could have been better, but it’s good for what it is.

That is really the major difference between the two, Garfield is bright and neon, Old Mill is dark and dull.

This new Old Mill ride was BORING compared to Garfield's Nightmare! Garfield's nightmare yes was hooky and loud color wise, but I would rather have that than boring with skeletons that didn't even move.....

The argument is that it fits the theme of the Old Mill better but yes by comparison it’s the opposite of Garfield. It’s dark and boring but that’s what people wanted to be honest. There’s definitely a lot less going on.

I think if you grew up on Garfield you love it but if you grew up on the Old Mill you wanted it back. The issue is that the Old Mill wasn’t what people remembered and the Garfield group were already unhappy with it. It was never going to satisfy everyone.
