first person ive seen react to this and understand that Miyagis wife was in an interment camp while he was fighting for the US Army... Morita was nominated for an oscar for this part , also, Morita was paralyzed as a child and couldnt walk until 11 when he had a new type of back surgery in 1942 , miraculously it worked but while he was in the hospital for two years, his family was interned themselves losing everything they owned including their business. After the surgery , Morita was moved to the internment camp to join them. His older brother never recovered psychologically from the experience and Morita had to support him financially until he died. I always felt the story of his wife and child in the movie was based on an actual event that Morita witnessed while there.

​@@RhetoricalThrill I first learned about it as a kid when the movie came out. This movie was one of the major reasons why Congress created reparations for those interned during WW2. Morita talks about this in an interview on youtube and says Congress only gave everyone 20 thousand dollars and if I remember correctly never gave his brother any money. I hope you watch the second movie, it goes into the Okinawa culture and Miyagis backstory. Btw, Miyagi is the name of the actual person who created Karate in Okinawa, also, all the karate techniques are pretty accurate in all three movies. Probably the most accurate depiction of real life karate ever put to film. I love how the writer does not shy away from making Okinawa distinct from Japan and China, unlike most other movies. Throughout its history , the okinawans were constantly invaded and occupied by the Japanese and Chinese and , of course, most recently by the US.

It's certainly what the Government publicly said in 1942 to justify putting thousands of Japanese-Americans into internment camps, and it's even what the US Justice Department argued to the US Supreme Court when the internments were challenged. But years later, Freedom of Information Act requests unearthed memos from the FBI, the Justice Department, and the California Attorney General (most Japanese-Americans lived in California) that they had no evidence whatsoever either that any interned Japanese-Americans were threats, or that any Americans had threatened them. Even then-FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover (who was no fan of recent immigrants) wrote a memo to the White House that his agents had investigated and uncovered no threats either from, or against, any Japanese-American citizens during the entire war, and he and the FBI opposed the camps when they opened. When the documents were uncovered decades later, it became one of the most embarrassing scandals in the history of the Justice Department, and the Department had to admit that its lawyers had lied to the Supreme Court in 1942. This was reported in multiple newspapers and books, and frankly, I can't believe that people like you are still repeating these lies 80 years later when even the Justice Department that created the lies in the first place admitted that they were false.

😄 It's been 35 years since I saw "Adventures In Babysitting," and to this day, every time I hear the word "Babysitter," I half expect it to be followed by the "I'm A Man Riff" played very loudly. Since you obviously have a fondness for 80s movies with lots of action, I want to draw your attention to the one that could very well have been the inspiration for "Adventures In Babysitting." 👶 "After Hours" (1985) was Martin Scorsese's lone attempt at dark comedy, and it's absolutely masterful. 😉👍

I can confirm: As a Finnish kid who lived in the great recession of the 90's Finland (we had our own bank crisis back then, after the fall of the USSR because they were our biggest trading partner), our family got live in USA, California from 1992-1993 and it literally felt like a dream world. The area we lived in (rented a house), was an upper middle class area with large houses, high fences, swimming pools in the yard and mostly white population. Our house had a yacuzzi on its yard, orange trees, lemon trees, etc, which was so unreal to someone from the modest living standards we had. As a sidenote to keep inflation in mind: I remember they had a campaign in Jack In The Box for a hamburger, a taco and fries for 99 cents. Do the math, how much does this combo cost you nowadays?

This movie has become so ingrained in pop culture that first-time viewers already think they know what it's about before they see it. As someone who watched it in theaters in my teens and recalls it fondly, I'm always amused when new viewers discover how well-written and deep it actually is. It's not a movie about karate, it's the story of a boy who lost his dad meeting an old man who lost his son. And you picked up on the subtlety of Johnny' character -- he has an arc, something a lot of people miss.

Pat Morita was also a standup comedian. He didn’t know karate before he was cast and I believe the karate instructor was the mustached man with the red shirt at the competition. Morita was also cast in the film ,”Midway” which is the sister film to “Tora Tora Tora”. They very realistic movies about WWII in the Pacific. Both films are joint American-Japanese productions. They both go on your schedule!

I'm from Hawai'i, and we have a strong Japanese/okinawan influence in our culture. Mr. Miyagi's character is spot on. My favorite Karate Kid movie is the 2nd, which was even filmed in Hawai'i and features many actors from Hawai'i, including the main antagonist.

Automobile Enthusiast Fact: The yellow classic automobile that Daniel polishes in the famous "wax-on/wax-off" training scene, then later offered by Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) as Daniel's birthday gift, was actually given to Ralph Macchio by the producer and he still owns it. The car is a 1948 Ford Super De Luxe. Historical Fact: When Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) is drunk and celebrating, he reveals that he served in the Army, in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The unit, composed mostly of Japanese Americans (many of whom had been in internment camps), fought in Europe during World War II. It became the most highly decorated unit in the history of the United States military. Basic Training Fact: The referee in the final match is Pat E. Johnson, a karate expert and former student of Chuck Norris. He instructed many movie stars in karate. He is credited as the "fight instructor/choreographer" for the film. He choreographed all the fights in the tournament. Some of the moves he taught the actors were beyond their normal skill set so he asked to remain close by in case he had to adjust or at worst stop the scene. The producers made him the referee.

Cobra Kai is every bit as good as this. All the heart, all the beauty. They make a point of bringing back everything. Every character played by the original actors, relationship beats, life lessons, training, even going so far as calling back settings and camera positions. It's fantastic. And it does those call backs to all four movies. Part two is good. Not as good, but still good. Three and four there's a sharp decline in writing and directing. Not that they're terrible, they're still fun, but definitely not as good. You might want to watch them before Cobra Kai so you catch everything. Cobra Kai is certainly good enough to stand alone, even if you haven't seen any of the movies. It's a lot more fun seeing everybody come back, spotting the Easter eggs, and knowing more about what's going on.

It's so much more fulfilling and entertaining when you can understand EVERYTHING that's happening - and can go through the ride with all of your Karate Kid knowledge. Enjoy! :)

I never thought Daniel was the bad guy I just think that some things about him haven't changed. I think that some things Myagi taught him he forgot. But then again there are those times that Daniel talks to his students that yes you can hear that he did learn alot from him.

Johnny was portrayed to be just a typical 80s' jerk in these classic films. The series doesn't try to make what happened to Daniel or who he was in the film a lie just give another perspective even if it's wrong and it does make Johnny a bit more sympathetic.

I think the arguments about Daniel being a villain in the first film is more a joke.. but the creators of "Cobra Kai" have taken that to create an extension of the film, as we don't see anything from John's perspective in the first film. But we hear more about him in the series and see how their lives become flipped. With Daniel becoming the "rich guy" and Johnny the under dog.. such a fantastic series that stayed true to the original films while moving characters old and new forward.

Pat M. Had a very rough life. He actually was in an interment camp during WWll. As a very young child 2 years old he got very sick and for the next 8 years spent all his time in a hospital bed and the doctors said he would not walk again. Well he prove them wrong did he not!!!!

This franchise is awesome, you’ll love part 2 more since it’s heavily focused on miyagi with Daniel as sidekick but not really lol, my favorite is part 2 all of them is great especially remake with Jackie Chan, except next karate kid is so so. Surprised you didn’t notice Lamar from Nerds as one of cobra Kai members I think it’s first guy Daniel fight in tournament. If it’s me I’d create platinum belt that only for legendary status like Bruce Lee, chuck norris, Jackie Chan, real mr miyagi (forgot his name), also cobra Kai have majority of ppl pops up on show from entire trilogy. Fantastic show I’m sure you’ve seen most of mainstream us movies with Jackie Chan, there’s plenty great ones he have done like police story franchise, drunken master, project a, countless others. New police story 2004 is one of my favorites of Jackie since it’s more drama heavy than ones he usually do, check it out on your own or maybe do reaction to that, won’t hold my breath on that happening

26:07 *BEST KICK* in the entire movie, thanks for including it, most people don’t. 26:16 That’s *DARRYL VIDAL* in white, a real-life black belt, he helped with the fight choreography, he’s also the one who came up with the *Crane kick* AND when Miyagi defends Daniel from the Cobra Kai guys after they pin him against the fence, for the more physical shots when you don’t see Miyagi’s face, that’s Darryl. 26:35 *SECOND BEST KICK* in the movie, notice how Dutch stands with Daniel to his left but then switches sides because he’s changed his strategy, he then throws a *weaker backward kick* tricking Daniel into ducking and as soon as he stands up Dutch gets him with a *stronger forward kick* in the opposite direction that Daniel never saw coming until it ironically hit him in the eye, it’s brilliant, too bad we don’t see the rest of the fight. Btw, *Dutch* is played by *Chad McQueen* who’s the son of famous actor *STEVE McQUEEN* from *The Magnificent Seven* (‘60), *The Great Escape* (‘63), *The Cincinnati Kid* (‘65), *Bullitt* (‘68), *The Thomas Crown Affair* (‘68), *Le Mans* (‘71), *Papillon* (‘73), *The Towering Inferno* (‘74) and many more.

What you claim is the "best kick" isn't even LEGAL. You're not allowed to hold onto a body part and kick someone, especially in the face in a Karate tournament. So basically BOTH of the kicks that you think are great, AREN'T EVEN LEGAL. The foot isn't allowed to make direct face contact, hence the crane kick only tipping the nose. Those are jokes by the way. When do any of these losers learn the back roundhouse? Oh that's right, they don't. lol.

watched karate kid trilogy and cobra kai for the first time earlier this year. the only karate kid thing i'd seen is the 4th movie with the girl, so i've had a skewed impression of it for decades

It's all in perspective. If you watch a documentary on lions, you root for the lions when they are hunting the buffalo. If you are watching a documentary on buffalos, then you root for the buffalo to escape the lions. "Cobra Kai" is fantastic in that it shows you a different perspective. Maybe we should always try to see things through other people's perspective. Good life lesson.

Except these kids were clearly being dangerous and despicable bullies. I'm so glad that it wasn't all portrayed in a black and white fashion, though. For example, when Bobby tried to stop Johnny from hurting Daniel near the apartments, and when Johnny congratulated Daniel, just to name a couple things. However, was there any reasonable doubt in general that Daniel was the good guy being attacked and bullied by violent, smart assed dickcheeses? Absolutely not.
