Old phone booths in England getting a new lease on life

With the rise of the cell phone, classic red phone booths in England have turned into a waste of space. But some are being put to good use. CBS News senior foreign correspondent Mark Phillips explains.

Pleasant story. Remember yesterday's junk is often today's treasure for the people smart enough to save some of it. I wish every pub and restaurant had one of these (or a replica) just outside the door or in a corner inside (depending on the neighborhood) as nothing more than a private phone closet for their guests. Maybe a small fan in the ceiling to fresh the air when closed. Outside it'd give the pub an old 20th century charm, inside it'd just let annoying or very private conversations occur in private. I assume the Police Box could serve the same purpose, but put an actual 999 only phone inside the little door. The US converted to the aluminium boxes in the 50s and scrapped them in the 70s in favor of little useless phone stalls. Most of ours are long gone. I see wooden ones in old hotels for atmosphere. I use them if I get a call while in a lobby.

Too bad, I always wanted to make a call in one of them while wearing a trench coat and a fedora while drinking coffee in the middle of a rainy afternoon LOL. I guess it's a foreign dream that I won't be able to do.
