Old Rusty Handmade Knife Restoration

Hello folks! This handmade rusty knife I found in garage of my dear friend when we work with his car. He told about that knife little story... This big knife he found at fishing near the lake. So of course he gave me this knife and I started to make this restoration project. For first look, I understand that was a handmade old knife and on the handle I seen some parts of epoxy glue.
Well, I started from removing all rusty from knife with electrolysis and sandpapers. After that, I made a bolster, pommel nut and knife handle. Handle of knife I made from Ash-Tree and piece of Oak tree. Also, I used two pieces of light leather. The cross guard I made of stainless steel and pommel nut from head of screw bolt. Насчёт бесполезной работы я согласен. К тому же косой-кривой, в болтающихся тисках, тупыми свёрлами, и т.д. А вот об электролизе в соде вы неправы. Наждачка и проволока не залезут в ржавые раковины в складках клинка,- только поверхность шлифонут. ЭЛЕКТРОЛИЗ УБИРАЕТ ВСЕ ОЧАГИ РЖАВЧИНЫ и в недоступных для шлифовки местах, а в доступных отпадает необходимость снимать много металла. К тому же происходит БЕЗ нашего участия и ЛИШНИХ физических УСИЛИЙ!!))

Плохо закреплённые тиски это НЕ ГУД. Но рассверливать гарду дрелью посредством наклона сверла, это просто полный ...ец. Наверное глаза есть запасные ((( Я думаю он очки не надевает, раз так работает ((( А так, руки есть, инструмент есть, желание есть ... Ещё бы ТБ соблюдать.

Overall I think you did a great job to be one of your early restorations. The reversed guard may not be historically correct and doesn't look right to us, but isn't even a big deal if you like it that way. Keep on working and making videos.

Man I wasn't sure about the nut on the end of the handle but I'm amazed how well it looks after a couple minutes of grinding it down and polishing it up.

Как извращаться с надфилем, как сделать гайку, как шиворот-навыворот поставить гарду-больстер и черенок лопаты вместо рукояти на этот тесак и т.п. The two things I would have done differently is one, reverse the direction of the hilt. And two, I would have sanded the handle down farther and round out the nut to match the handle contour. Atherwise nice job.

Oh boy... you made so many mistakes during this project... But i reallt LOVED it. The only person who does no mistakes is the person who does nothing. And you do things you want with tools and materials you have accessible - this is the best thing a man can do ☺Making mistakes is a normal process of learning. Everyone is failing things, then they (hopefully) learn, to do things differently and come out smarter with a lot of experience. This is the way great things are done! Do, fail, learn, do better :) If you keep up, you will be making really amazing things in a few years, i promise you that:) Just a few advices from an older technician: - sharp, well maintained tools do work much more efficient (almost all of our drill bits were dull). Only the last one produced a nice strand of chips during the drilling. Learn to sharpen your drills and you will be more happy. - exchange your saw blade if you can't cut through a normal bolt. They are not that expensive and it will save you A LOT of effort. - It's hard to use a metal file on a wood;) Invest in a couple of wood files and you will feel much better working with wood. Otherwise, a great job and a really nice final effect. Keep up a good work and get pleasure from fixing things :)

Гарда потолще просится, между гардой и ручкой проставка была бы хороша..лезвие ок! А вот рукоятка неудобная будет, толстая в обхвате и неанатомическая...я б доточил....а так молодец! Возился долго, клинок вывел нормально.

For future reference (and I learned this the hard way), files only cut in one direction, when you push it forward away from you, you should lift up to pull it back or you dull the teeth. You can re-sharpen them, but it's a pain in the ass. You'll cut faster and deeper if you only cut on the push not the pull. Otherwise pretty damn good job man, thanks for sharing!

I know this is an old video, but I've sen you do similar on more recent ones. You take great pains to add threads for screw-on pommels to a lot of the blades you restore (and get actually impresively good results, as this video), even those which have holes for rivets to attach scales to a full tang. That is... a bit redundant. :-) End pommels (be them penned or screwed on) are used where the handle is not riveted directly to the tang, but held in place by the guard and the pommel (like _this_one). If you have holes for rivets, you don't need a screw-on pommel, and if you have a screw-on pommel, you don't need rivets.

Its a sweet result! Except the handle looks like itd be difficult to index the knife. Ive got knives with guards like that but its hard to index unles you can feel the guard.

When I started watching your video I was being critical of some of your techniques. Then read that this was an early attempt, trying new things. Started watching with a new eye. It was only that moment i was thinking "oh, please don't do that like that, *snap* oooohhhh get the right tool! *snap*".
