Mr. D, it warms my heart to see a young man as yourself that has educated himself with the lures us old timers use to fish. I started serious bass fishing in the late 1950's and at the time there was not very many people that collected bass lure and kept the boxes the lure would come in. The bass plugs available in those years, for the most part, were "quality made" baits, usually of wood, with beautiful painted color patterns. Heddon, Creek Chub, Helen Flatfish Co., Lazy Ike, Bomber Bait Co., and Shakespeare were the major lure makers for 1950's fishermen. Hand craftsmanship and quality made were two expected assets in those years of fishing lure production. Plastic has replaced wood for the most part, with computer designed baits, NOT man-made as in the past. Plastic baits do have an advantage in longevity, whereas wood baits, if fished much, will get scratched, dented, beat-to-hell if it's a fish catcher, also plastic baits are cheaper to make than the wooden lures. I do remember in the 50's using the Heddon Zaragossa for topwater spring & fall fishing. The Heddon blue shore minnow pattern was a particularly local popular top water bait to fish for those spring time adventures. Mr. D, we were "walking-the-dawg" with the Zaragossa long before that term was used for the Zara Spook, that came later. If you aren't familiar with the Zaragossa check it out on eBay. A fatter version of the Zara Spook 5/8th oz. in blue shore, white, or the frog pattern were the fish-catchers here in mid-west central area of Georgia. Also the old "tried & proven" Lazy Ike in the frog pattern or perch. Hell, with a Lazy Ike you could go purple and still catch bass. The No. 4 size Lazy Ike in frog-color was my most popular bait to fish. Throwing from the boat to the bank, this sub-surface caught me more fish that the others put together. Using the old Ambassador 5000, a semi-sit. worm rod, and a 12lb test line to maximize precise casting. I became an advocate of the Ambassador bait casting reel in those times. It could cast baits with ultimate precise throws. The Ike came in different sizes but the #3 and #4 size Ikes were most popular with the locals here. One more old bait Mr. D, the Heddon Game-Fisher (broken-back model) was used by myself, and a few others as the action of this bait as you reeled it in was like the sexiest "belly dancer" you ever saw! A subsurface bait with tantalizing action that hungry bass could not resist. A perch pattern was the fish-getter around here. All 3 of these listed lures can only be seen on eBay or a antique fishing lure book. The quality and craftsmanship of the game fisher has few rivals in fishing lure history. Mr. D, thanks for your video and your lure-wisdom you graciously share.

I appreciate your insight on these as well as your sharing of those memories. I am familiar with the zaragoosa and have read up on them. They were the 'zara spook' of the time. Until plastics came into the picture. I have a bix box of as found wooden lures in many brands. I also have caught beautiful bass fish with the lazy Ike lures. I honestly prefer the old topwater lures or sub surface for most of my bass adventures. I appreciate the fact that you can still find them..not only on ebay though. I go to flea markets and yard sales all the time. I've found boxes of lures and sometimes just one or two good ones. Regardless, it's always fun and we will always do our best to keep preserving some if the fishing lure history for the up and coming younger generation that shows interest in them! 🎣🤠👍 Tight lines David!! - 'D.'
