Let me put my 2 cents in. I am 48, been playing for 32 years now. Saw most those guys play live in Parma, my town, Italy. Got a rebound hit in my face on Yuri Sapega's smash. I saw live CSKA Moscow (Savin, Sapega, Losev, etc), Saw Pirelli Sao Paulo (da Silva, Montanaro, Xando), saw the legendary Dutch team with Ron Zwerver, saw the legendary Italy of Bernardi and c. Saw Cuba live with Despaigne. Have seen a lot and yet, the rules have changed, the training has changed, the gameplay is faster, the players are hyper human. Like in all sports, rules have changed and mankind has developed. But Savin was also hitting the ball in the middle at 3.50 from the ground. I loved the old sets, where, until the end, you could always come back and win. Today you win 22-18 and you know the set is pretty much in the bag. I liked both ways really. Each was and is fascinating in its times. Is it better to look at Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan or Kareem Abdul Jabbaar? Each time gave us its moments.

Not too much of a difference, except that now players have techniques that are more effective than before. And it'll keep changing. Eventually someone will figure out a new way to hit the ball, and they'll be able to spike it way harder. Sports just keep evolving.

Serving in the classic vball was a lot different. Why? because hitting the net is a violation. but Modern vball, it's ok if the ball hits the net.
@ajtamburino45857 жыл бұрын
FormEEh Ohyeah well not if it is served short, a tape shot doesn't matter but you were also allowed to block serves in early 80's and before so that probably play a role and is why the served higher above the net
@berkeslaw7 жыл бұрын
Precisely. Simple analysis like your trump's prejudice. Rally scoring and 25 point games likewise allowed for more freedom on serves.

I refereed high school and recreational leagues for 20 years. The classic game was called a lot tighter than the modern game. The modern game is tougher to call, because the action is faster. Back in the classic era you did not have rally scoring, so the games could last a lot longer to side outs. Plus, you don't have a libero.
@Lyraniah7 жыл бұрын
The only reason modern volleyball's serves are much stronger and most importantly riskier is because back in the days when you played up to only 15 points, you could only score doing a break point. Exchanging sideouts until the end of the set up to 20 when you arrive in the so called "money time" and only then making the difference is a trend of modern volleyball.
@fedreserv61336 жыл бұрын
Many good, but not sensational players. In today's volleyball only Ngapeth and Leon are making huge difference. 20 years ago there were Zorzi, Giani, Papi, Zverver, Blange, De Goor, Grbic brothers in Europe only, not even to mention Giba, Bitencourt, Hernandez, Pimienta, Dennis and others. Today's volleyball is not that strong. Not even close.
@KENNECTED17 жыл бұрын
Personally I enjoyed "side out" scoring vs. today's "rally" scoring.

I played high school, college, and club volleyball. The old school players were more well rounded. A player like Karch did everything well. The invention of the Libero and loosening of ball handling rules allowed bigger, less skilled players to flourish. Although, I am wowed by the sheer power of today’s players, I miss the precision of the game of the late 80s and 90s.
@tieria3467 жыл бұрын
In modern, when the spiker spike you can't see the ball.
@manK20227 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. I do try to draw attention to this problem for several years, but FIVB is blind and does not want to hear on that. What is behind? When fans follow this sport on Internet/or TV regularly, then there is risk to harm their eyes, since such balls create disappearing and blurring optical illusions. Moreover official balls do not have clear contrast from a surrounding. To see now a trajectory of such balls is possible only during slow motion replay...

Oldschool stars had much higher individual skills of winning high balls against tough consolidated block. Wonderful vision and wrist action, skill of playing off the block, not just 'jump higher, hit stronger". Modern volleyball too much relies on speedy sets and physical fitness of the hitters. it's now more like track-and-field than the art of making the only winning decision and implementing it with perfect ball control. More run and hit, less thinking, more athletics, less genius.
@shinobu027 жыл бұрын
fraer111 lol bruh ur just wrong in every way. You don't seem to getthat hitting the ball harder is only one of the ways to get past a block. dont hype up old volleyball by saying they coukd deal with a ball better than any modern players. And i dont think there is any footage of old players hitting anything shorter than 5 ft of the opponents 10 ft line. All in all, new players are just more effective in every possible way

Giving it to modern, purely for the libero, they can keep a match going a lot farther (and not to mention they look clutch as hell weve all seen the clips where the libero runs into the audience to get the ball) it's also the position I want to play so I might be a bit biased

Modern players are clearly much better athletes, but the "new" rules don't make the game better, IMHO. Never liked the libero position or overhand serve returns, and I miss side-out battles. And what's with a let serve rule granting a lucky point for a sloppy serve?

I am torn on the libero question. And, while I used to have the let serve rule, I had it explained to me this way be a Legendary Beach and Olympic player: There are 6 players receiving. If you can't have at least one in a position to pick up a stray let, too bad. It made sense to me. Todays athletes -- like in EVERY sport -- are far superior, but I think that side-out scoring was much more refined.

to be honest volleyball did not change that much between the 1980s and today than for example football/soccer did, which looks like a different game now. The game is a bit more faster and streamlined now, but most of the key techniques even in place today where invented before the 80s so there is not much innovation in regards to the game itself but it is more focues an athleticism, play speed etc.
