One of the true early customizers still left. I remember seeing his cars in the magazines in the 60s a lot. Thanks for the memories Chuck.

He is a good Man I met Gene at the Cow palace in San Francisco car show. He gave me his time to talk because there was a whole lot of people there that wanted to shake his hand. The second time was at a Good Guy's car show in California he remembered me I was floored yeah he's just a regular teacher he teaches technic at his shop. His quote is "EVERYDAY IS A SCHOOL DAY" GENE WINDFILD . That's his line he will always tell people that wants to learn.

We will never be able to replace Gean Winfield . There is a tall guy that came from New York to California this close . He has a TV show about the life of me I can't remember his name . But he is old school all away . He and Gean are friends

I was lucky enough to meet Gene by way of a friend of his, a Modesto Throttlers member, Roy Farriester. I built a custom 41 Ford four door chop for Roy, I met Gene at Merced on our first run out with the 41, I was amazed when he complemented Roy on his car. Which meant I was getting a complement from Gene WInfield. Proud day for a Boy from Modesto, Ca.! I also built a 46 Ford coupe that took peoples choice at the Franklin syndicate meet in Lodi against a car built by Foose. Good day there too! Thanks for the memories guys. Reality TV's "so called customizers" pale in comparison to Mr. Winfield, as most could not function without gallons upon gallons of body filler, and have no idea what a "slap iron" or "vixxen file" looks like. Thanks, Chuck, for sharing this with us!

Wow chopped 70 car's he's a professional. I wonder how much it cost to have a car chopped with glass and everything done on it as far as the chopped top?

@@jessejohnson159 When I chopped the 46 in 1990 we were quoted $5000 for a chop of 2 1/2 inches on the 46, and Rod Powell's shop didn't even know what a 46 looked like!

@@GuitarDan1000 It's always a guessing game to price something as custom as a top chop! Or any other custom metal work for that matter! If a price is given up front, they try to go high on the cost because they don't want to give away work because they priced it too low. There's a lot more to it than 'just' the roof sections to be modified. There's the inner sheet metal parts that trim up the windows and windshields. And the glass.... Even glass shops won't 'guarantee' they can cut it right the first time! That's one reason why I learned how to do that kind of work for myself, starting in 1968 or so.

They have fucked up a lot of cars through the years. A chopped top is one of the quickest ways to make a car look like shit. That and lowering too low. Anyone who chops a thirties coupe should be bullwhipped.
