Its funny cause one of the things that "drew" me to Yu-gi-oh is the art style. I used to draw the characters on the cards all day. I remember, at one point, we were really poor and couldnt afford Yu-Gi-Oh cards but me and my little brother loved playing so I took the time to cut out and draw 2 decks for me and my brother to use. I was a really big Yu-Gi-Oh fan and knew most the card effects by heart so I wrote out all the text as well. Then, I built a homemade battle arena out of beds and boxes for us and it was time to d-d d-d d-duel!

I think the reason the og anime is so ingrained in people's memory is the method through which we all saw it. Saturday morning cartoons and weekday reruns. Ask any educator, the best way to embed information into someone's head is repetition. We watched the same episodes of the old show constantly. Its why duelist Kingdom is so ingrained in our memories because we watched it the first time. Then we watched It again while waiting for battle city episodes. Then we watched it and battle city again while waiting for new episodes of Waking the Dragons. The Kaibacorp Grand Prix and Pharoah's memory arc don't stick as well because we didn't get that repetition. Nowadays, we binge through an entire season of anime in a day, and forget about it until the next season comes to crunchyroll or netflix. It doesn't stick. Its not the writing being better or worse. Its not nostalgia goggles. Its the lack of repetition.

For me, I played from the very start, through 2009 when I left home for college. It was around that time when synchro strategies were all the rage, with TeleDAD having just left its mark a few months prior. In school, I haven’t really thought about the game at all until I was at Walmart one day and saw the Marik structure deck, and was completely floored by the decklist! Lava Golem? Mirror Force? Allure of Darkness? Gravekeepers? Magical Stone Excavation? I immediately bought three copies of it. But even then, I never had anyone to play with in school, so I never did much with it. It was in senior year when I started dabbling in online dueling through Dueling Network. I think XYZ monsters were just coming out around this time. But ultimately I’d stop playing that too, and I haven’t thought about the game much since, completely bypassing pendulums and links. Fast forward to 2021, and I stumble across one of my old trade binders, and got incredibly nostalgic about all the cards I was finding. So I then set out on a quest to dig through my attic and my basement to find all my old cards, and started going through them. I couldn’t believe what I had forgotten I had. Including a really strong Extra deck, a fully-functioning Gravekeepers deck, and an Ultimate Rare 1st edition Solemn Warning! It’s also around this time that I started researching Goat format, a way to seriously scratch that yugioh itch that’s being bubbling up while also keeping the rules and games both simple and familiar. And here I am now, considering investing in several Goat format cards!

I think the reason it is becoming more relevant is because of scalpers and what I call the "seeker hype train." Where people don't really care about collecting or playing, they are in it just for the money and what not. Which sucks because it takes away from people who have always been a fan or new people trying to get into it legitimately. I get business is business, but there was a huge wave of this in Pokemon and now it is making its way to Yugioh and other TCGs. It is what it is.

Yeah I can definitely relate to this, I recently built both a Yugi and a Kaiba deck using the oldest versions of those cards I could get my hands on via troll and toad that most closely aligns to their decks in episode 1/duelist kingdom. In short if the card is seen even once in their decks during season one I put it in their along with the Detonate and Attack the Moon respectively.

I'm one of the people getting back into to collecting classic cards from the anime, and for me it's about the nostalgia and building the collection I always wanted as a kid that I now have to resources to do so. The increased prices are a big bummer, but I'm not as picky with some about the rarity or set, and the great thing (that fans like yourself can get annoyed by as you mentioned) is Konami has reprinted cards so many times to make them readily available. Glad you're welcoming fans back into the hobby!

I got back into modern Yugioh a few years ago, but I played for only about a year or so. I hadn't played since 2002 and had to learn everything (Synchro, XYZ, Pendulum, Links, etc) all over again, and it was pretty fun. But my heart was still in the Duelist Kingdom era, and playing modern yugioh just made me miss the OG stuff more. So i love to see this personally, id love to make a duelist kingdom deck and slug it out with normal monsters and simple magic and traps again
@trogladite6663 жыл бұрын
awesome chat mate! I wish they would put classic version battles on games like legacy of the duelist, i don't understand the newer summoning and i don't really want to understand it. but! i would love to play online with some like minded individuals in a classic duel!

I've gotten back into Yu-Gi-Oh! in the past couple months and its been amazing. Now I'm an adult and can actually afford to buy cards and merch. I've bought a few of the statues Kotobukiya rereleased in 2020 and have preordered the First4Figures Blue Eyes. Playing the game again with my brother has been great, though learning the new mechanics and catching up on the meta has been a bit more time consuming. I'm currently collecting and reading the manga for the first time as well as rewatching the show subbed.

I think one thing thats undermentioned is that the older monsters just generally look cooler than newer monsters. 5ds was about the cut off for like "memorable" monsters. Stardust Dragon, Blue Eyes, Dark Magician, the God Cards, Yubel, etc. all look much more sleek and cool than modern cards
@MetelAdict3 жыл бұрын
I would love if Konami built a format for cards from the beginning to about 2005, maybe a bit later. Of course, to do that, you'd have to start printing the old sets. People will whine that their 19k cards won't be as valuable, but I really don't care about that. It would get lapsed fans back in, and I don't really see that as an issue.

The GX era was where it was at. The power creep wasn't absurd yet. Decks still had plenty of room for personality instead of just exclusively being what the current meta was.

Old school yugioh was 🔥... duels actually lasted, strategies and back up strategies took time skill n luck to set up. Cards didn’t have 3 paragraphs of text... summoning mechanics were not obnoxious... now its all about 1 turn kills and setting up massive boards. Flip effects? Na. trap cards? No thanks.. tribute summons? I dont think so . Otk on turn 3 ? Yes please...... P.S i fkn hate link summoning.....

I had an OG Red Eyes B Dragon as a kid. Was my favourite monster then and still is. Unfortunately, that poor card went through the riggers of childhood dueling without sleeves. I would freak out to have another one today, and am honestly tearing up at the thought of it. Nostalgia is a powerful thing.

What I want most out of yugioh is more format support. My favorite time of Yugioh was the beginning of the synchro era. The decks weren't as insanely fast as they are now (where you see first turns taking 10 or so minutes and people spilling out 3/4ths of their deck and extra deck in a single turn to make unbeatable boards), but it also wasn't super slow/bricky/topdecky like early yugioh. I feel it was such a nice middle ground and I really want to be able to play in that sort of format again, but outside of playing with some weird ass ruleset me and my 1 friend made up every now and then, I don't even play yugioh at all anymore and it's sad. I miss this game. I miss the memories I made in 2008 to 2011. I miss the decks and the pacing from that era. But it's now lost to time. Even now in 2021 we really only have Standard, GOAT, and Duel Links (the latter two barely being supported at all). So my only option to play the decks I like in the format I like is just playing my one friend, with the same decks, over and over again (and we both feel like it would be a waste to spend a bunch of money on these cards just to play with each other every now and again).

Love the content that this channel pumps out! I'm in favor of a company cashing in on the nostalgia train if the purpose is to bring in fresh blood into the franchise. YGO has struggled to do so year over year. With every new show announced, YGO loses more audience than it gains. Rebooting is a great way to bring new fans in, but it needs to be planned out very well because it's got to satifisfy existing fans AND try to introduce YGO to new audience. We've seen some success with Digimon recently, but that has yet to proof whether a simple reboot anime could keep the franchise going for the next decade or two.

I actually came back to Yu-Gi-Oh now that I am older due to nostalgia since I got some cards when I was younger. I am really sad I was so bad with my old cards because none of them survived but, now that I am 20 I have started to collect cards and I even got two of my friends to play when they have no experience although it is funny that I am teaching them since I am still learning but yeah I do think nostalgia has been a big role in making people collect Yu-Gi-Oh cards these days.

As a collector my self I do enjoy collecting both new and old cards and I find it awesome that people are getting into it. My main issue is getting products at a decent price. Shadows of infinity and Cyberdark impact is just absurdly priced. It's rough and new lotto cards are nice like Armed Dragon Thunder lv10 as a starlight. It's pretty rad.

YGO is 20 next year. I hope they do some sort of classic anniversary reissue for all the cards from that first run. I miss it being a simple 'get your monster out, boost with field and equips, to your opponent up with spells and traps'. No real structure beyond what cards you liked. My best memories are from that initial 2002/2003 run, and id love a set of those classic cards just to play with. I even bought legendary decks during lockdown, just cause I wanted that nostalgia hit.
