I am 49... Still love old death metal also love all these newer Brutal DM Bands and also now there is finally a whole new handful of new bands that are creating OLD SCHOLL style DM.. sounds just like the formula that you and I so cherish....ok but back to Inner Self and this particular Sepultura album.. I think I was a Freshman in highschool and I just discovered the joys of smoking marijuana and jamming to out to this album.. also experimenting with LSD... Wow... Such a precious time in life... if I'm correct I also Cannibal Corpse eaten back to life came out the same year.. I also heard OBITUARY for the first time . Chuck and DEATH Scream bloody gore and Leprosy wer already in my collection.. My whole middle school years consisted of heavy doses of SLAYER and MEGADETH..I never really got into Metallica.. go figurer.. I was more into minor threat and Black Flag.. I was a Sk8ter Punk .. This was all around 1987-1989 was my freshman year... Damn y'all sorry for the soliloquy... Lol

At 47, I’d agree up to the point, where I find myself wishing that Sepultera had just made heavy instrumental albums, without all the unintelligible Cookie Monster vocals that I more & more struggle to ignore. I love Sepultera’s heavy groove metal music profoundly, like with the amazing band Carcass, whose vocals are even harder to tune out. I’d pay to have the vocals edited out of abunch of music, back from when I was a teenager, with a karaoke type of program, like my cousin uses to make his drumless versions of songs, that he plays the live drums on for practice. There might even be a huge untapped market for remixed heavy metal mixtapes without any frustrated incel Cookie Monster vocals? Fighting the mainstream, to remain underground, with the ridiculous Cookie Monster shock value vocals, severely limited & sidelined the growth of heavy thrash metal music from evolving at its very peak…🤔

I was 11 learning Taekwondo. I would enter sparring tournaments representing my school/teacher. This young kid who spoke broken english w long hair who would compete too was always so hyped and not intimidated by older kids even sparring w them. Just happy and excited. His father saw us grinding and encouraged us. Later after meeting my mom and it was all good he would drive us to random 90s reseda tournaments blaring Sepultura. I already had a young punk etc skate influence for music and loved it. His dad explained the amount of respect the Brazilian people had for the voice Sepultura had in Brazil. Would tell us of the community vibe - in the 90s , he compared it to a Brazilian Grateful Dead following but political and metal etc. (later I understood it in comparison to fela kuti in Lagos ). He would jam the cassettes before a tourny and hype us up. After that I had seen several through several times throughout Young adulthood and teenage years. It was an influence that I was very grateful for specifically coming from someone that came from a country that they loved, but they were frustrated with wanting to leave, but we’re still so stoked and so determined to just always be happy and say fuck it Overall, I’m grateful for the influence and I’m grateful for those people and I’m grateful for the influence of Sepultura - so thank you to max , igor and everyone else for that age and time when music had heart. Soulfly, derrick green…. Everyone. ❤️

The Inner Self intro remains absolutely killer as the same with the rest of song. Impossible to take off from the mind. The Sepultura playing live was completely technical, fast and brutal. One RHCP sticker doesn't cancel out that they went deep and hard into underground music while growing up in a third world military dictatorship, and they did all this before the evolution of the internet from a few text message boards into a firehose of music new and old You can do and say what you want, but I'd advise against questioning their musical credibility based on one sticker

Growing up in the same city as Sepultura I was 7-8 years old at the time of this TV show. By then I had a couple of albums from Iron Maiden (my dad got them for me because I liked the drawings with Eddie), and that had put me on a journey to discover all sorts of more traditional metal bands... But as a kid and with no internet, my interest and exposure was super limited! And that's the context in which I remember listening some songs from Beneath the Remains and realizing Sepultura was a local band! The brutal rhythm, perfect guitar tones and squealling pinch harmonics felt to me like someone took my limited references (Maiden, Priest) and cranked it up 200%. I wouldn't discover Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, etc for a few years still and when I finally did, they all felt derivative. I never loved Sepultura's vocals (my references were Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford) but early Sepultura's guitar work and music made an impression on me that lasts to this day: they have the best guitar tones for Metal, ever. If you pay close attention you'll hear Max Cavalera and Andreas Kisser doing dives like Dimebag Darrel, low drop D pinch harmonics like Zakk Wylde and unusual harmonies/compositional choices like Chuck Schuldiner and some of those things likely before or in paralell (in my perspective) to some of those more famous artists in North America.

Great comment, i can tell you are a guitarist. Its cool that you mentioned that Max wasnt your favorite singer and also mentioned Chuck, who also had a growling type of singing. Chuck's guitar work in Death is so ahead of his time, so amazing, it has influenced countless bands and players.
@Jack_Rivet Жыл бұрын
A couple of Brazilians I've worked with have told me that Sepultura were regarded as a bit of an anomaly where they were from, because the Belo Horizonte area was more famous for Brazilian Country Music :)

@@fungus_am0nguz644 Chuck was awesome. It's a shame he was taken away so young. His guitar prowess and creativity influenced a couple of generations and continues to do so. He did sing very well technically and both his singing style and Max's are fitting to the songs actually, but yes I do care more about the guitar work 😁
@thyagofurtado Жыл бұрын
@@Jack_Rivet you got that right! That's very accurate and continues to be the case for the state of Minas Gerais, Goiás and other nearby farming states. Belo Horizonte as a bigger city has seen a change I think in the 80s, 90s or maybe earlier and there is a strong rock, punk and metal culture. Sepultura might be a symptom of that culture in the city, but it's very likely more of a cause that helped spread the metal culture there! 🤘🤘
@iteramaxe-metodologia Жыл бұрын
@@Jack_Rivet Many Brazilians don't know this, but Belo Horizonte used to have a strong metal scene in the 80s/90s. There were several other metal bands that didn't achieve the same fame as Sepultura, such as Sarcofago, Chakal, and Overdose. Sepultura's first EP, Bestial Remains, was shared with Overdose and recorded by a local record, Cogumelo, which was also a music store in Belo Horizonte where the headbangers used to hang out. Andreas Kisser is from Sao Paulo and joined Sepultura because he would frequently travel to BH, attracted by its metal bands. It's hard to imagine Sepultura existing without that broader context! There are two documentaries on KZbin about the BH metal scene: Ruído das Minas (Noise of Minas) and BH Depois dos Anos 80 (BH After the 80s). I don't think they have English subtitles though...

I think Serginho regretted inviting Sepultura because the crowd got really hyped. The host kept asking them to stay where they were, or he would stop the show. Even João Gordo from Ratos de Porão was there on this memorable day for the history of Brazilian metal.

Qué bonito!!!...Me resulta tannn relajante!!! Además de todos los álbumes tengo 1 mini- lp de Sepultura casi imposible de encontrar, por no decir imposible. Con temas en directo. Mi perrita qué en paz descanse se llamaba "Arise".

Melhor fase do Sepultura e o melhor vocal do Max. A era ARISE foi brutal.

Bons tempos que ele CANTAVA e TOCAVA a porra da guitarra, hoje em dia só carrega ela no colo e não tem mais potencia nenhuma na voz....

Agree with you

@@regzalbz2197talvez pq ele sempre cantou errado e isso acabou com a voz dele
@regzalbz2197 Жыл бұрын
