My uncle was was drafted into Vietnam against his own will and when he returned home, he endured a lot of hate and displeasure for his service in the war even though he wanted nothing to do with the war

Sadly thats how all Vietnam vets were treated. Just absolutely disgusting how they were treated. Forced against their will to fight and when they got home they were treated like monsters.

That was pretty common. It wasn't a very popular war among the public. I never understood why you would hate the soldier who was just doing their duty vs hating the government who put them there. The later, I FULLY understand. Go on google and look up your nearest recruiting station, I guarantee you it's in a relatively poor neighborhood. We recruit people who are lost and struggling for purpose and seem to have no future. Reminds me of BYOB - by System of a Down.

My Dad was so "lucky". He was drafted, went to boot camp and was dismissed because of flat feet (I have them, too). I'm sure it was one of the happiest days of my Grandmother's life.

As someone who has served and recently been diagnosed with PTSD from my time in the army I can relate to how hard it is to talk about it, I tried for years to forget about it but it just made things worse. Thanks for doing this and for the respect you have shown it will mean a lot to some people.

Very moving. That old guy was sharp, very much aware of the world and his place in it. Amazing. The young guy, as you pointed out, is a bundle of pain. And think how many guys like him there are! My son did two tours in Iraq, and Kuwait (that part was a piece of cake, he said) and he's such a steady kind of guy, his wife and I have talked and she says she's never seen any indicator that it affected him in any negative way, which I find so hard to believe. He loves his wife and kids so much, his face beams when he talks about them - a guy who can feel that deeply surely carries some scars! Great video and loved your insights and reactions.

in the US nearly 22 veterans commit suicide every single day. The story OB Dave told about the soldier who was ready to off himself but couldn't do it in front of his dog was touching. Hopefully more help become available and programs such as the one you reviewed and reacted to today will help someone to put the gun, or the pills, etc. down and to seek help. The younger soldier mentioned that during this interview it was 10 years since Serjeant Paul McAleese of 2nd Battalion The Rifles,was killed on active service in Afghanistan by a roadside bomb during a foot patrol in Helmand Province. Paul McAleese was the elder son to the former SAS legend John McAleese (Iran Embassy siege)

My grandpa was a gunners mate on a sub chaser in ww2. Towards the end of his life the only thing that would bring him back to life was to ask him about his time in the Navy. He would light up and just go on and on he was so proud to have served. He and his brother lied about their age and enlisted to do their part. When he got back he started a plastic bag company making plastic covers for oil drums for Exxon. He sold it off but kept a shop on site where he began woodworking. He had 3 daughters all who would grow up to marry and have kids of their own and one of his daughters adopted me. Man changed my life.

In the US when our military men came back from Vietnam they were told not to wear their uniforms on the planes going home because they would be spit on, booed and attacked by the civilians in the airports.

I was in Iraq and I tend to agree with the younger guy about not believing in it after a while. WW2 seemed pretty straight forward in comparison.

Yeah, all of my friends who were in Iraq (I'm the same age as him) joined the war kind of out of necessity and patriotism, but it didn't take long for all of them to universally start thinking "why the fuck are we even here?"

WW2 was pretty cut and dried. The Axis were the bad guys, they were trying to take over Europe and eventually the world and had to be stopped.

My father served during the Korean War and my son served in Iraq. My father was in the navy and didnt experience combat but my son protected convoys of supplies and experienced quite a few firefights and his vehicle hit IEDs 3 different times. I’m a Texan so i have that pride ingrained in me that loves and appreciates our military people and my country - loving my country doesn’t mean i love our government !!!!!! It needs to be purged !!!!!!!!!

The older gent was an artilleryman; the younger gent a grunt. Those two roles are quite different. The younger gent has seen much more violence, up close and personal. I wouldn't chalk up the difference in perspectives to only a difference in battlefield or time period.

The comment section of the video is pretty bad since there are loads of people who are saying the younger generation is weak to be so mentally affected by it compared to the old guys who never talk about the mental side.

I think the difference of the old soldier was he felt he had a righteous fight the new soldiers started figuring out a lot of it was false advertising and they weren’t there for the reasons they were given

That guy must have been 16 or 17 when he joined if he deployed in 2006. I'm the same age as him an I graduated high school in 2007.

Great Reaction , My point of view is the Older Veteran was fighting for his country to Not lose his Family to Nazi Rule , The Younger Veteran was fighting for other countries to save their freedom , Imagine the Office Blokes and the UK being under German politics today ? crazy thoughts

Britain would be under German policy today if it were still in the European Union. Fortunately, Brexit happened. But for me to think like that, I needed time. Only after a few years did it begin to dawn on me why Brexit happened and what motivated the people who wanted it.

It's more complicated than that, but I know what you mean. You should look into the Stanley Milgrim experiment. It shows how far most regular people will go when a perceived level of authority is telling them what to do.
