Its interesting to see the small differences between now and 100 years ago. Nice video.

I seem to be commenting on a lot of your videos at the moment as I’m binge watching my way through them 😅 Anyway, it’s interesting you mention the rope and the chain, many police forces still have the rope and chain as part of their mounted unit ceremonial uniform. I worked out what the rope was for but never realised the use of the chain so thank you for that explanation. I believe quite a few forces use the military style bridle as standard as well. Makes sense to have the head collar option if the officer has to dismount and tether the horse quickly.

What a lovely tribute to the thousands of horses and mules that died in WWI. Thank you for such an informative video on some of the harness used in that time period.

I can't wait for more videos this year where you talk about the horses and their mindset and what they learn to do. This horse here is very nice, very calm and happy.

I just watched "War Horse" the other night. I think they did a great job replicating the equipment of the time. Great video!

Happy New Year to you all. We used to use a similar style of bridle when we were trail riding and camping for a few days or even weeks. The Cairns Centenary trail ride, and the Bicentennial National Trail are a couple that come to mind. These are both in Australia.

This is really interesting! Thank you for posting it. So much information can be lost because it is not recorded because "everybody knows about that". Then the time wears on, or the war ends and the knowledge (and technology is gone). I am a history fan, and it is always the stuff "everybody knows", the dates, the reasons, the general knowledge of the time, even whole religious dogma of the birth of the god, or the why it/he/she was worshipped is lost.

What do you think of the army reversible bit, are they like a driving version of a pelham?
@archiecook71706 жыл бұрын
Where would you get a bridle like that, does your saddler make them to order?

What is the breeding of this horse? What is his prefix?
@barryhook26 жыл бұрын
No prefix, he's a Clydesdale cross.
@elliottanderson24536 жыл бұрын
Ok. Thank you. He looks quite similar to some of the horses I've seen at the Clydesdale foal shows this year in his markings and conformation.

was the quick release to save the horse's life so he could run off?
@north707coastnomad6 жыл бұрын
i was thinking since it is military, if the horse was killed, the quick release would allow for a fast interchange so that important equipment can still make it to its destination with a replacement horse. just my thoughts...
@barryhook26 жыл бұрын
Both comments here would be correct (although rather than 'run off', he would probably be lead away) but they would also be used for ease of unharnessing at the end of the day in muddy and less than ideal conditions where cleaning harness would not always be possible. They would also allow a horse to be released from the shafts of a stranded cart without issue, for example should it sink or be damaged.

Clydesdale cross - he really is a stunner! His video is on our channel under: Harvey the Heavy Horse
@lynnehuff96596 жыл бұрын
That sounds great. I like the history segments, too.
@lynnehuff96596 жыл бұрын
He totally is a stunner. How tall? He desn't appear tall. I should have known he was a cross. So well balanced and those eys. Seems like one is kind of grey, and one is blue. I'm studying Shires right now. The book is from the UK. Very confusing with information starting from 1066!I can't remember the author it is full of illustartions, which I like. I love tack, and don't know anything about harness. Thank you for a great show.
@barryhook26 жыл бұрын
Harvey is almost 16hh (and at 4 years old, with still a way to grow) but he is built like a tank, so he doesn't look "lanky". Both of his eyes are a shade of blue, yes. Hope these videos help you learn! Our 'How to Harness' series has an episode explaining each piece if you would like a step-by-step breakdown.

Is Harvey a stallion? I think I may have seen him in another video.

Yes he is - his training video is 'Harvey the Heavy Horse' and he is also in our Logging video. Quite the star!
