What a great idea. A while ago I was selling a couple of electric drills cheap and a couple of African men came around to buy them and we got chatting. It turned out they were buying tools to send back to villages in Africa so the locals could make things to help themselves become more self reliant and make a living. Well that knowledge changed things and I went around my workshop and grabbed a heap of other tools I didn’t really need. Pliers, handsaws, heavy duty g clamps and some other power tools. It was nice to give them away to someone, somewhere in the world that could really use them. Cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺

I love this. Recently, I responded to a request from a woodturner for tools for Africa and gave a big box full of old tools to the charity. They sent us a video of the tools arriving in the village. I happened to see some men opening the box I sent and it made me feel super happy that I was able to help. I happen to know the gentleman in charge of the Methodist Container Ministry and he is a wonderful person who will most likely get a lot of tools when I go. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Good man! I live close to the Tools for Self Reliance workshop near Southampton (England), and love the idea of sending "retired" and refurbished tools to those that need them. Old hand tools are frequently better, and last longer than new plastic ones - so bless those who pass them on.

@@MarkMcCluneyA lot of these old tools are great, especially planes. Got a couple of old Stanleys from a thrift store to complement my dad’s old #5, as well as a neat wooden shoulder plane. Didn’t take much to restore them to working order, some work on the grinding wheel to take out the nicks, then the sharpening stones. Those old Stanleys are built to last and I use them often. Oh Mark I really hoped you would have shown us more of the tools in those boxes, it was so enticing to see those boxes of tools and I would have loved you to have shown us more of them they were like treasure troves. It is such a shame how many old and often very useful tools are unwanted and many just thrown away. I always say that there is no such think as junk - it's just stuff in the hands of the wrong people. I have lot's of tools in my workshop that were given to me after relatives had passed away and when I use the tools it reminds me of the person who had owned them. When my uncle passed away in 2016 I was given his old tools and amongst them were some spiral screwdrivers (pump action type) that I myself had used some 60 years ago when I worked with him in a local woodworking factory. I often use them today and when I do I am always reminded of my uncle and my past history. Thanks for the video Mark.

@@scrimperuk So good to hear from you John - I hope we're going to get a few vids from you soon! I wanted to keep this one nice and short to keep the message of it relevant. Accordingly I concentrated on all the unusual tools and scientific instruments which I'll try to sell separately for their collectable value, and then donate that money. The rest of the items in those boxes, and that was only half of them, were conventional woodworking tools, car/mechanical maintenance gear, plumbing tools and such. These are the things that folks really need in developing areas. It's so good to hear that you have inherited at least some of your workshop equipment - this seems increasingly rare as the years go on. Young folks just don't seem to want the stuff anymore but it's such a shame to dump all these useful items, that's why it was such a blessing to realise that someone somewhere genuinely wants these old tools and there are folks in our own neighbourhoods who can facilitate the delivery. Thanks again for looking in, and I'm looking forward to a Scrimper vid very soon!

Thanks mate and be sure to spread the good word about this sort of thing. There's a lot more of a story about it - when Alan approached me at church it was clear he didn't want to dump his father's old workshop gear I really couldn't think of how to get it to someone who wanted it all. Then about Easter I was in Bristol airport and saw a lad wearing a tee shirt with a picture of Africa made out in tools with the caption Tools for Self-Reliance. He sat right beside me and I knew the Lord had provided! I got talking and it turned out that they wouldn't be the solution as they accept only personally delivered stuff and they have branches only in England and Wales - not very convenient for me in Norn Iron. I called a pal of mine who works for the Methodist Church in Ireland's missionary crew and asked "do you know anybody who can help and can you put me in contact?" "Yeah", he says "I'll put him on - he's sitting beside me." About a week later we were delivering all those boxes of gear and more and, as I understand it, it's already on its way to Sierra Leone. Soon Alan's father's tools will be back doing what they do best and the world will be a slightly better place. And all it took was a chat in an airport and a phone call.

Got it in one Tony! The film can (a sort of mystery item itself nowadays) contains all the wee fittings for different applications of clip removal. All those boxes of conventional tools have already been sent to Sierra Leone (I think) but we're hoping to sell all those oddball tools and donate the money. Thanks for looking in mate, I really appreciate it.

I use old tools all the time. Nearly all my tools are second hand. I did by some, but usually, I got them free because nobody wanted them. My workshop is huge and packed !! I can do nearly anything with tools I got for next to nothing. No one sees the value of tools in our society. Foolish!!

I know of a Dr / Acupuncturist who collects a shipping container full of old bicycles and sets up a section as a workshop fitted out with hand tools. When he travels to the villages to teach basic nursing, medicine, and first aid to the village he usually finds the most industrialist young adult and sets them up with the bike shop. On a return visit to one of them he had found that they had developed a tow behind stretcher and created a basic sort of ambulance that could travel back and forth between the surrounding villages. It just goes to show, that if you give a village some knowledge, basic tools, and kindness, they become inventive and share the humanitarian side of themselves with everyone they can reach out to.

@@privatechannel8462 Thanks so much for looking in. I think in some cities there are tool 'libraries' where second hand tools are available for loan, and I've heard of, but never actually seen, open workshops where you can bring your broken furniture or appliances to work on where someone might be able to advise you. I wish these were more common but that's not the economic environment we live in - such ideas are not really encouraged. In third world countries old tools and second hand materials are a lot more appreciated. More power to them! Thanks again, I really appreciate your comment.

I would also add that you would need to produce an operators manual for most of those tools. Just handing a "tool" to some indigent citizen isn't enough. A manual with pictures would be needed.

I do that the container ministry staff, and I'm sure this is true of all these charitable organisations, are greatly experienced in this business and do not just dump stuff in these places and then disappear. Ha! I could never feel comfortable in one of those mighty workshops that looks neater and cleaner than my kitchen! My late father was a tremendous admirer of the "make do and mend" abilities of third world workers. It reminded him of the attitude of rural Ulster folk during the war and after when there simply was no resource - things had to be repaired anyway whether it was a tractor or a pair of trousers. My Dad handed that baton onto my brother and me and we bear it proudly. I'll be pleased and proud to support other "menders" anywhere else in the world.
