Great honest review. Can a trolling motor be installed in place of the pedal drive? I'm 69 and a very avid cyclist but like the idea of having that option. Plus I'd be using this kayak in salt water bays (mainly) but would like the option of using in the surf to bait drop in deeper water. Thanks

I’m sure you can DIY something up, but old town doesn’t offer anything. If you want motorized kayak old Town makes some great options like the Sportsman 106 Minn Kota and the Sportsman Autopilot.

Great video man.. thank you. This one you reviewed wasn’t in awhile back so I put my money in the Big water 132 and haven’t picked it up yet, BUT, The 120 PDL came in and I have the option of getting it instead. Been tearing myself apart trying to figure out which one I want now. However, the 120 I think is still winning, the other one is made a little different and is also awesome. Just trying to figure it out. Guess there’s worse problems to have
@BlueSummitOutdoors
@BlueSummitOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
No problem! It all depends on what you are doing and what you want. The 120 PDL is probably more stable and the Bigwater is bigger and is faster. I would say you can’t go wrong with either Old Town makes great kayaks.

Man this was a good review of the PDL. I have been looking for a pedal drive kayak for a while now. I like the PDL because it doesn't have the straps that go across the pedals. I am a chubby fat dude & i have big very very extremely wide feet sz15 6 EEEEEE wide with very chubby fat wide toes that are equally straight across making my foot very very wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. I have a question? Do you know how wide the pedals are & is it pretty comfortable to kayak barefooted 👣? I have to kayak barefooted 👣because of me having very wide feet. You answered one of my questions about pedals barefooted 👣 with the pedal being on your arch on your foot. When I demo a kayak I had that same problem with my feet bottom out when I would pedals with my balls of my foot. The problems that you can have with kayaking with big feet. You have a size 12 with this problem just imagine having a size 15 with extremely wide feet with chubby fat wide toes that are equally straight across. I will admit I had some embarrassing moments with these feet. Appreciate if you could let me know this information. Try to see if I can pick me up one for Christmas. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. I hope it was a safe one.

So the after market rudder bolt was worth the purchase?
@DetroitFishigan
@DetroitFishigan 2 жыл бұрын
I have a one, and the biggest thing they didn't do was add tracks on the back, so you have to add them yourself, and if you do that then bye bye lifetime warranty 😬😬. If i had to do it all over again, i would go with Hobie or Jackson kayaks for the drive system. Those are much better drive systems Imo 🙂.

I noticed you switched from Hobie to Old Town, do you prefer the pedal drive over the mirage?
@BlueSummitOutdoors
@BlueSummitOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
I prefer the motorized versions of the old towns over the mirage drive. I still like the mirage drive over the PDL however that’s just personal preference and the PDL is a great prop style pedal drive.

What did you think about the risers? And what size would you suggest?
@BlueSummitOutdoors
@BlueSummitOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
They are great and help with the angle of your hips to pedals. They make it more comfortable in my opinion. I would go with at least 1 inch and I probably wouldn’t go over 2 inches, anything more than that might mess with stability.

How far can you travel, over one mile? Kind of a dumb question I know lol. I got a spot I want to fish thats about 2 miles from dock but I get wore out before I get there.
@BlueSummitOutdoors
@BlueSummitOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Yea I would say about a 1-2 miles before I need a break but I rarely need to go that far for the lakes I fish. I also like to fish spots on the way to other spots so I don't continuously travel long distances.

Lol I started kayaking 2 yrs ago. Bought a brand new Pelican Journey, put a trolling motor, boat buoy on each side. Not knowing it had a weight capacity of 200lbs. And I weight 250 lbs. I joined a Kayak club and these guys go fishing everyday if the weather permits. Great learning experience. Last week I purchased my Old Town 120 Salty. Very stable, Like night and day difference. I recommend joining a club.

Curious about how durable the PDL is with hitting structure with it .
@BlueSummitOutdoors
@BlueSummitOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t try to hit anything with the PDL to see, but from what I’ve heard the tabs that lock the drive down are meant to break away and are easily replaceable if broken. They break so that the drive doesn’t take the brunt of it.

Awesome review! I ordered the Sportsman 106 PDL in April…. and I’m still waiting for it 🤬 I just watched your video on the Sportsman 106 Minn Kota…I was torn between that n the 106 PDL. Just curious…..which do you like better…120 PDL or the 106 Minn Kota?….🤔

I prefer the Minn Kota but it can get pretty heavy. They feel a lot a like on the water just depends if you want to pedal or be motorized.

Yea it should be fine for your weight and height. I would definitely try pedaling it before you buy one. Just to see if the bicycle style motion is comfortable for you. It can be uncomfortable for some.

Great video. I just have to point out one thing that made me giggle. At ~6:10 you say that you have to pedal with the arch of your feet. Yet, throughout the video, whenever you are peddling the balls of your feet are on the pedals except at ~6:10. Not sure why but I found that to be rather funny.
