With a camera mounted on the front of one of the powerful ex South African NGG16 Garratt locomotives No. 87 our train eases out of Porthmadog station onto the Britannia Road Bridge and level crossing. Number 87 negotiates its way through the town before crossing the Cambrian Coast railway via Britain’s only mixed gauge flat crossing. For a short distance we run next to the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway (WHHR) to Pen y Mount junction, passing under the new Porthmadog bypass into open countryside. Shortly after Pont Croesor station is an interesting bridge carrying both road and rail over the Afon Glaslyn (River Glaslyn). With the distant hills looming on the horizon we steam through pleasant farmland punctuated by the odd river bridge to Nantmor halt after which the character of the line changes as we enter the Aberglaslyn Pass via No.4 tunnel. Bursting from the tunnel onto a ledge high above the pretty river below, with glorious mountain scenery all around we are now traversing one of the most photographed locations in the country. We leave the Aberglaslyn Pass via Goat tunnel to enter Beddgelert station where a Porthmadog bound train is waiting for us to clear the single line. The noise from our engine increases as it lifts its train through the wooded slopes to the summit marker board a mile or so short of Rhyd Ddu station.
Track gauge - 1 ft 11 1⁄2 in (597 mm)
One question that has come up many times in the comments for both the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways is "Why doesn't the train leave the tracks when it passes through a switch set for the opposite track" - it is not east to explain, but I'll try -
The switches at either end on the passing loop are set to allow trains to pass without the need for railway personnel to set them, in this case the train will always take the right hand track in the direction of travel, when the train reaches the end of the loop the switch appears to be set incorrectly. The switch blades are held in place by a spring mechanism that allows them to be pushed over by the weight of a train passing through them. Once the train is clear they are automatically set to allow a train in the opposite direction to take the right hand track, thus making the passing loop automatic. The system works well so long as a train never reverses before clearing the switch as that will de-rail the train. The first time this system is seen in operation it looks wrong, but it is common practice on many lines where speed is low and costs need to be kept to a minimum.

Great to see the final link in place. We camped at the Beddgelert site in the sixties and walked on the original roadbed, then later went back in our caravan (there's posh!) several times, seeing the progress through tracklaying then a ride from Rhyd Ddu to Dinas junction and finally from the camp halt to Carnarfon and to the now closed halt on the way to Porthmadoc which was as far as the line went then. Thank you for bringing back happy memories.

Hi, the Garratt locomotives look right at home in Wales. Like you I have visited the Welsh Highland Railway regularly to see it coming back to life, this was my first ride over the complete line. The first time I visited Beddgelert as a child back in the sixties I used to walk along the line and through the tunnels. It didn't seem possible back then that trains might once again steam through the Aberglaslyn Pass.

The old celtic gods, you see them everywhere left and right. They are still alive, it seems. The Welsh seem to respect very much their land, made by their old gods. They just use it, but do not destroy it, in the so-called modern sense. No big agriculture or anything of that kind. So the land looks like like it looks. Just Beautiful.
@Timsvideochannel1

The Welsh are proud of their Celtic origins, it can be seen in the buildings and features in many myths and legends. Apart from a few road improvements Snowdonia hasn't suffered from modern over development. Wales wouldn't be Wales without the picturesque dry-stone walls that typify the scenery. Re-opening this railway was an inspired move because it allows tens of thousands of people to appreciate the wonderful scenery without damaging it.

@@Timsvideochannel1 How wonderful. My Dad used to own a Seaboard private executive car that he would use for various excursions including hosting party trips to the Fla-Ga games. On Saturday's we'd go out to where it was stationed & have lunch & just enjoy the car. It could sleep 13, had two private sleeping quarters with private facilities in mahongany wood, staff quarters, a kitchen, & a huge living & dining area. It even had a speaker's platform. Eventually Dad sold the car to the National Railroad Historical Society of Georgia. My ultimate dream is to one day take a cross country train trip.

Hi, the switch blades at 13:40 are set for the other track. The switch is held in position using a spring mechanism, as our train passes over the blades, they are pushed over by its weight, the system works well so long as the train does not reverse once it has started passing over the switch. This system is designed to allow trains to pass without the need for anyone to operate the switches. It does look a bit alarming the first time you see it.

I am astonished at the workers of 100 or so years the way they carved out routes to lay down Train Tracks through all kinds of obstacles whether it be Solid Rock, Deep Water, roads, Rails ow whatever. HOW did they bore through solid Rock to create Tunnels Or open up a passage to let the railway line through. The building up and digging out of all sorts of surface to create a level track was all done without the help Of JCBs Bulldozers or ANY machinery... That generation is grossly under appreciated as well as the people who mapped out the routes to zig zag from start of the Line to the end of it all WITHOUT the aid of Satellites OR Microsoft mappings.. Geniusis one and all. ant THANKS to them and their forward planning.

Hi, I love your comment, I agree with everything you say. This line was built to carry slate from the quarries to the coast for onward shipping, unfortunately it was too late on the scene as slate was in decline, but too early to be a tourist railway because only the middle class could afford holidays, it was built over a protracted period of time, finally opening throughout in 1923, it fell into receivership in 1927, with most of the track lifted by 1941. That should have been the end of the story, but for a group of volunteers who formed a society to rescue part of the line in 1961, for a short history, please click on this link - www.whr.co.uk/heritage/brief/

I have seen and read books about Irelands wonderful narrow gauge railways, such a shame they have all gone, had some of them survived, they would have become top rated tourist attractions, giving people a good reason the visit Ireland. I love how the Ffestiniog/Welsh Highland railway have been allowed to not only build their own crossing across a main road in the centre of Porthmadog, but they've been allowed to have a diamond crossing with the National Rail network. How does that work now with ERTMS installed on the line?
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, the two railways were connected to each other in the past via a route through the town that involved some street running. Today's route between the railways follows a more practical coarse with less street running, although running across Britannia Bridge was common to both. The network rail crossing was expensive to arrange and install, it took a brave and determined effort to connect the WHR and FR along with cooperation from Network Rail. Credit must be given to all concerned for making it happen. WHR operations contact Network Rail to ask for permission to cross the main line. Hi, the points do appear to be set for the other road. This is quite normal on low speed passing loops as it saves the points having to be changed when trains pass. The weight of the train will push the point blades over, although once the train has started crossing the points, it cannot reverse because the train will derail.

When the Ffestiniog reopened the line they wanted to connect it with their existing line, requiring the line to pass through the town. The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway is well worth visiting to see their collection of original locomotives and rolling stock.

The steady white lights (not yellow) indicate to drivers that the train operated trailible points are correctly set for them to proceed, the flashing whites indicate a a road crossing system is fully activated and that they can proceed onto it. The red discs with two yellow lights are 'ladybird' home signals, unique to the F&WHR.

They switch back into place as the train passes using a spring mechanism of sorts.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, this question comes up a lot, so often I decided to add this explanation to the video description - The switches at either end on the passing loop are set to allow trains to pass without the need for railway personnel to set them, in this case the train will always take the right hand track in the direction of travel, when the train reaches the end of the loop the switch appears to be set incorrectly. The switch blades are held in place by a spring mechanism that allows them to be pushed over by the weight of a train passing through them, as this train is about to do.

@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, this is usual practice on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland railways at crossing places. The switches are always set to allow trains to pass without the need for anyone to set them, but it does create the situation you highlight when the train leaves the loop, as it pushes through the switch apparently set for the other track, a sprung mechanism returns the switch to its original position so that the next train in the opposite direction will take the other line, which I admit can look a bit alarming the first time you see it.

Doesn't look spring-loaded to me. Not sure about Wales/England, but in the U.S. "spring loaded" means they're sprung to the tangent route, and a train on the diverging around pushes them into that route when exiting the diverging line.
@Ynysmydwr
@Ynysmydwr 5 жыл бұрын
@@jovetj And yet both switches ARE spring-loaded. (In what way do they not look it to you?) In these two cases, the springs keep the point blades set in such a way as to route all traffic approaching the loop (i.e. from the facing side of the switch) onto the right-hand track , whilst still allowing trains leaving the loop to push the point blades over without manual intervention -- after which (trailing) movement they spring back to their former position.
