I used to ride on the opening bridge with the gateman on my way to school at St. Augustine's. We lived on Ackers rd opposite the council yard (now the fire station).

My father worked in Broadbent's (a typical "Are you being served") shop! I think it was near the top of Bridge st.

I remember Gault's toy shop, it was like Aladdin's cave!

The butcher's shop on first left was converted to a house before WW2 and my parents rented it until about 1967 when that side of Green St. was demolished to make way for the new road scheme, which also caused our allotments off Hood Lane Gt. Sankey to be taken off us.. The house was haunted by evil spirits that made the upstairs rooms very uncomfortable. The little chippie next door and newsagents were still there when I was growing up. The houses further along were all converted to shops eventually and I rememember Phil Edwards bike shop, Rutlands Butchers, a music shop and Sayers cakes and bread shop. Out of the frame to the left there was another'butcher's shop next door and the Green Man ale house.
