THE CHESHIRE RUN 2024 - classic LORRIES & CARS enjoy the sunshine (eventually)

In today's video the Cheshire Run, for classic lorries, pickup trucks and vans is covered, centred around the half-way halt just over the border in Shropshire, at the Midway Truckstop. We headed over to park up at a vintage garage close to the action in our 1947 Dodge pickup truck to view the proceedings, and also re-unite the Dodge with another classic American pickup - a 1954 Chevrolet 3100 - that it shared garage space with for many a year.
As the morning progressed, the weather improved and by 11am-ish a number of classic trucks had already passed by en route to the mid-way halt.
The large lorry park area close to the Midway Truckstop and also the Raven cafe is a popular meeting point for vehicle enthusiasts out for a ride or drive on a sunny Sunday anyway, so in addition to many wonderful old trucks, quite a few classic cars also turned up - some taking part in a separate road run which happened to also include a coffee stop at the same location, which was a welcome addition to the Cheshire Run entrants themselves. All in all a very pleasant way to spend a morning.
The video rounds out with on-board footage of us driving the Dodge home down some very quiet country lanes, enjoying a rare glimpse of the sun.
Thanks for watching, I'll include links to other similar classic lorry videos here on the Old Classic Car channel at the end of this one. Please take a look around if you're new here and consider subscribing to catch more of the same in future.

Seeing the Atkinson brought back memories of my first ever job. I went to Rutherford Grammar School in Newcastle which in 1966 had the reputation of having the most well turned out mods as pupils. I like many of my mates had an account at Jacksons The Tailors and I had a weekend job servicing trucks at a local haulage contractor in order to pay off my top mod suit. In the winter my first task was to lie on a thin sheet of cardboard over icy puddles tp grease all 27 grease nipples of Atkinson trucks. As there was 12 of them it was a long and cold job. All the Atkinsons were powered by the legendary Gardner diesel engines which never missed a beat and gave lng service. Seeing that "Atky" sent shivers down my spine - in memory of all those icy puddles!

Hi Rick I had the pleasure of driving a BMC FG with a milk float back fitted as a Co-op milkman around north London in the late 70’s the odd door design meant you never opened your door into the traffic but when I ventured into a council estate I’d be blessed with kids jumping in to doorway for a joyride, happy days. Hi 👋 Loved this video. Brought back memories for me. Here in NZ we had many Bedford trucks on the roads. The Thames Traders were a common sight to. We never used the word lorry here in NZ like you British do. We would say truck. You are correct . I lived in Auckland which is a major city in the North Island and we had Bedford busses, and Daimler trolley busses which went out of use in the late 1970s. They all were replaced with brand new Mercedes Benz buses then. The Citroen Visa was cool to see. Very rare vechile now. I love the old red Albion truck with Oxo painted on the side. Especially when the driver honked its horn as it passed by. Thanks so much. From Carl.

A chinese 6 is a 3 axle twin steer. I know i used to drive one for Barber Road Services in the 80s . They solved the overloading problems of multidrop 4 wheelers but the Turning Circle was terrible.

Good one Rick. I really liked that Thames Trader flatbed. I remember a local builder who was doing very at the time in the 60's buying one brand new, always liked it. Looking at it now I see where it got its styling cue from, particularly the grill an d headlights surround.. ..50's US F series trucks.

Star of the show for me was that gorgeous Albion coach. Hope you can feature it in more depth later this year as you suggested. Such quality compared to today's ghastly, multicoloured, advert-adorned, fume-belching monstrosities. That apple-green and cream livery could be Southdown? I have fond memories of travelling on Southdown buses back in the 50s and 60s in Eastbourne. I espied washing hanging on the line when you returned home. I hope poor Mrs OCC wasn't slaving over the laundry while you and the Youthful Assistant were swanning around!😄

Hi Colin - thanks for the compliments - I've been privileged to be the owner of the Nimbus for the last 10 years or so. She's a Guernsey bus, in service 1965-1980, then preservation after. A sister bus is running on the IoW, but that's the only other one roadworthy.

Thanks. Yet another brilliant video with plenty of beautiful old stuff. My favourite for today is the Wolseley 16/60, I can't really decide on the trucks because there are so many that I love here.(Actually, my favourite overall is the Commer Bus but I forgot about that briefly).

Hi Richard . I'm not into commercial vehicles but the presentation of these vehicles was very impressive . The interior of the coach was fabulous and that rescued Bedford (?) the passion the owner put into that small truck , wonderful ! The yellow 3100 confirmed my suspicions ...l was at a show yesterday and there was 3100 there. I noticed the left rear fender had a huge dent that was half beaten out......and then l had a closer look . It looked as though it could have been there to allow a spare to be fitted ......l was right ! Thanks Richard .

Great video with some beautiful vehicles , a 'Chinese 6' can't be an 8 wheeler though , a Chinese 6 had 2 front and one rear axle as used on a good few Bedford coaches and some lorry's. 👍

Good video RJ, I know it requires significant investment and financial commitment to keep these trucks on the road not to mention the fuel costs. £7.5K for that lorry doesn't seem expensive I would think but that would depend on what additional work is needed if indeed any is required. My son has a transport company with 10 trucks mainly artics and a couple of flatbeds and other vehicles and the weekly fuel bills alone are in excess of £20k and that is with discounted fuel card agreements. One truck, a Renault, decided 2 weeks ago it would self combust on the A1 and completely burn itself out in the process. I always liked the Ford Corsair.

Gary you were absolutely spot on with this one. What a shame. What a let down. We went down there 15 years ago and it was great. Familiarity breeds contempt and he probably has no idea what’s going on quality wise. Probably find the restuarant was franchised out. I commend you for not taking the food back but I would send him the video not that I am saying he wouldn’t watch it on You Tube of course !

Water board In Greenock always had Transits and Bedford Astra / Ford Escort vans etc in the late 80s but a new EU rule came in forcing the water board to buy the cheapest bidder and we ended up with utter shite like the Citroen C15 and various other unreliable garbage that would literally come apart in your hand.
