My favourites are the Austin/Morris J4 and the Commer Walkthrough but I'm biased. My Dad had his own business from 1965-72 repairing accident damage on commercial vehicles. He ran a couple of J4's and regularly worked on Walkthroughs for Wall's Frozen Foods. As a pre-school kid I went to his garage a lot and usually spent all day playing in various Commer Walkthroughs. I well remember it and I was 3 when he closed the garage down. Dad couldn't bring himself to tell me he'd sold the J4 (I would've played hell!) so he told me it was being fixed. I stopped asking about it by the time I was 4 so I reckon I'd probably accepted by then we wouldn't be seeing it again.

The Austin LD vans were used by Royal Mail for many years. We had relatives in London and those vans seemed to go on long after they disappeared elsewhere (could be my imagination though). The Commer walk through I will always associate with our friend who delivered Corona to our door, yippee! My great uncle drove the firms Bedford CA for work, he was a carpenter. I remember on several occasions riding with him going to various places, no seat belts of course so hang on to the seat especially if the door slid open while in motion! Another great set of photos, thanks for sharing them.👍

The Bedford CA sliding doors had a catch to hold them open on hot days but they used to wear and the doors would slam shut under heavy braking, We had two CAs in the family in the early sixties, both 'splitties' the first one being a '54 van fitted with windows by a local undertaker (RHU 698) followed by a '58 Martin Walter 'Workobus' (816 CYC). My late Uncle Sid used to have a Reliant van with the girder forks, us kids used to call it 'The Doodlebug'.

Seeing the Bedford Rascal gave me shivers up my spine. They were sold here in Australia as the Holden Scurry and a mate owned one. Each week we would take turns driving to our golf game and I dreaded it every fortnight when we traveled in the Scurry. The thing was bloody dangerous! Especially on a Aussie country road at 100kph (60mph) where it would bounce and buck like you wouldn't believe, all the weight being in the front. I think the rear wheels were only there to stop the bumper dragging, they didn't seem to spend much time in contact with the road!

I recall an edition of 'Top Gear' in which Richard Hammond demonstrated how unstable they were.

The Bedford Rascal was really a Suzuki. It was made in several countries. It remained in production in India (as the Maruti Omni, with an 800cc three-cylinder engine) until a few years ago.

The Morris J is so iconic. Easily outshines those corrugated Citroen alternatives - imo!

My father had 2 Morris J vans in a row for business, both called "Humpy" due to the roof shape.

My personal favourite has to be a n Austin/Morris A60 10cwt.Bench seat and column change. I tried to buy it off our local milkman when he retired but he refused to sell it to me due to my being 15 at the time.It ended up disappearing into the weeds in a fieldalong with a primrose yellow FB victor estate presumably also used for the milk round. I also remember a lights behind the grille series 1 Land Rover rag top in a shed on the farm.

Grandad had an early Morris Minor van,split screen with waffle toaster grill,WLG 441.He regularly towed a 20ft fishing boat from Bramhall,Cheshire to the Scottish Highlands.Unsurprisingly,it went through 3 engines so I’m told.Part exchanged in 1973 for a Morris J4 in 1973 which he couldn’t drive which was sold after he died 2 years later with 600 miles on the clock.

Never heard them referred to as waffle toaster grill Minors, will try to remember that. Thanks for watching :)

Excellent presentation. I'll take the DKW! I saw a passenger version parked outside a fire station in Atlanta, Georgia several decades ago. Friends of my family had a split window VW with windshields that opened. I've never seen another.

If the series 3 Morris is rare, how rare is a 1953 Morris Cowley Van? I am genually asking as I have one and I am trying to prevent it from turning to dust. At the moment, I am treating it as a garden shed project, making it water tight and presentable. A clip is up "rare Morris Cowley Van".
@oldclassiccarUK3 жыл бұрын
Very very rare, I remember a great uncle of mine having either a Series 3 or Cowley van dumped outside his place in mid-Wales, I think someone rescued it years ago but where it is now I don't know. Either is very rare now.
@normls86153 жыл бұрын
@@oldclassiccarUK Thank you. Seems like only the U.K. Morris Oxford / Cowley club would be able to help more. Only you need to know someone in the club for a code in their news letter to be able to join the club.
