Driving the Shockwave Jet Truck. I took this at the Capitol Air Show in Sacramento CA 9-11-11.
Here is what it is like driving the fastest Jet Truck in the world, Shockwave.
There are 5 levers he will be using. Starting from the right.
The red handle is for directing the thrust up wards. This is done to not melt the track when the fire show is put on. Next are the throttles for the 3 jet engines. The long one with the knob is the chute and engine shut down. The one closest to the driver Kent, is for the fire show. He dumps raw diesel into the after burner. When you see him put his right hand up to the roof he is adjusting the fire that comes out of the exhaust stacks. This is one hole show. It is from the time they stopped at the end of the runway all the way through the full power run. When you see Kent adjust his gloves he is ready for the 300MPH run. Don't blink or you might miss it.

I always thought of him as Chris Darnell driving the jet truck after my dad took me to the air shows many times as a young boy. I fell in love with the truck. Always told my dad your my shockwave truck driver! I made little labels for all my toy trucks as a kid that said shockwave. My dream is to drive a jet truck with my dad. Its my dream ): thank you chris darnell for being my favorite truck ever. You have no idea how much i loved this truck as a kid

The large red lever controls a flap on the rear of the truck. When it's pulled back it directs the jet blast and fire slightly up away from the track. When pushed it's to put more down force on the nose of the truck. The small red lever close to him that he pulls on through out the show is for dumping diesel into the after burner and into a ring of spray nozzles to make even more fire. This is the only video of what Kent does in the truck during a hole show. I was lucky to get the video

It's been years ago, but I've seen Kent a couple of times in North Carolina with my girl friend. It's been many years later and I would like to share that amazing experience with my wife and three children. This video was fascinating to watch, I've never knew how Kent operated such a beast or anything about the set up inside the cab. From the footage, it looks like the Shockwave Jet Truck owned by Darnell Racing Enterprise show team suffered a mechanical failure; possibly a blown tire which caused the truck to tumble and roll. RIP Chris Darnell. Vids like yours, even though old, are popping up because of the algorithm.

Up is go. The afterburner are actuated on the up stroke. His handles are designed so when he pulls the large black one at the end of the run, it cuts the fuel to the engines, the afterburner and deploys the chutes in one motion.

actually there's only the brake pedal in the truck. the levers in the truck are for throttles to the engines, the red one directs the thrust off the runway, and the one he plays with is for the afterburners, the one with the black ball on it deploys the parachutes and shuts the engines down.

During the show as he runs up and down the track he is actually checking how much the cross wind will push the truck across the run way. So when he does his 3776 MPH run the truck will actually go from one side of the track to the other. The 2 extra chest bets he uses were installed after the truck had a blow out and he crashed the truck.

This video may be 15 minutes long. But the hole video from the time they turned on my camera tell they turned it off was nearly 1 hour long. The man helping out side is Bob. If you notice he is not using any hearing protection. That is Patty Wagstaff you here flying around. Next if you notice the seat belts. He is using a 7 point harness. He uses a second 3" lap belt across his chest. It was added after his last crash. When he drives around he is checking the wind direction and allowing the truck to be pushed across the runway. This way he knows what side to start the run on. Then the truck will cross the runway from one side to the other then by the half way point the wind has pushed the truck back to the side the started the run on. If you were above him it would look like a slight radius. Left to right then back again.

about the 5 minute mark, when he is starting the engines the first thing he does is turn on the switch to the fuel cut off valve. Then while watching the turbine pressure / temperature gauge he gives it just a small amount of fuel. At that point just by the sound of the engine you can here it was starting to burn back up into the compressor. So he pulls the fuel off and tries again. A compressor back fire in the cab of that truck could be fatal to him. Jet engines have a tendency to do that when cranking. Once spooled up it's much safer but it can still happen. If you look at the engine in the lower left of the screen you will see the air condensing from time to time as it is sucked in. You can also see the yellow of the fire reflecting around the back when he is yanking on the fire valve.

Forest Rat Productions. Chest restraint has latch release and the five point has a QRB box as used in aviation, one swift punch on that and it releases all four clips, I'm pretty sure they will be well rehearsed in escape drills and would not doubt be able to get out in a matter of seconds.

From the grandstands you can actually feel the heat and jet blast when this baby roars down the strip ! I've been lucky enough to see Top Fuel, Funny's Cars, Pro Stocks & the exhibition vehicles 100's of times and it never gets old ! So check out a National Event if you get the chance.... look at the end.. the "normal" 5-point (shoulders,waist,groint) all connects to a center lock wich opens by punching at the centre.. and the extra waistbelt has a type of (hard to explain) hook mechanism..opens by lifting a handle.. involved in rescue (dragrace) and believe me..they can be out of the car in a few heartbeats :)

And when they (the Shockleys) built the truck, they custom made the control levers including the handle for the afterburners. I'm sure it would take some enormous energy to break that.
