"Backwash" ist der Titel unseres ersten Albums in Studioqualität. Unter Surfern beschreibt man damit einen Effekt, bei dem eine Welle von der Küstenlinie zurück ins Meer gespült wird. Dadurch kann man manchmal sogar in die „falsche“ Richtung surfen und wenn diese Welle auf eine andere trifft, wird man manchmal mehrere Meter in die Luft geschleudert. Einige dieser Songs sind bereits in meinen Teenagerjahren entstanden, als ich die Trennung von der ersten großen Liebe meines Lebens zu verarbeiten hatte. Diese treffen auf jüngere Ideen, denen wir gemeinsam mit ehemaligen Bandmitgliedern und in unserer heutigen Besetzung Leben eingehaucht haben, explosionsartig, mit einem Schlag (Bash), genau wie diese eben genannten Wellen.
Der Abschluss unserer Platte hebt sich deutlich von den anderen Titeln ab: Keine verzerrte, dreckige Gitarre, ruhige Stimmung und akustische Weite. Older behandelt den Zweifel über den Verlust der kindlichen Naivität im Zuge des Alterns. Kann man die Kreisläufe durchbrechen, die einen immer wieder dieselben Fehler begehen lassen? Ändern sich Menschen oder bleiben sie im Kern immer gleich? Wird man im Alter vergnatzt, unflexibel und ignorant, oder weise, erfahren und sanftmütig?
Bei Older spiele ich Akustikgitarre und Rhodes. Gitarre habe ich richtig gelernt, Tasten habe ich mir selbst beigebracht. Kai hat in der Musikschule Cello gelernt bevor er in Metalbands Bass spielte. Für diesen Anlass hatte ich mich dazu überwunden, doch mal etwas in Noten aufzuschreiben. Gemeinsam fanden wir dann eine Linie, die die bereits aufgenommenen Instrumente umspielt. Der Song baut sich langsam auf, Eduardos Shaker und Bongos kommen in dem offenen Raum erst recht zur Geltung. Das Schlagzeug setzt ein, das Orchester ist vollständig. Die Steigerung im letzten Refrain verursacht bei mir jedes Mal Gänsehaut, bis der letzte Ton ausklingt und ich die Platte von vorne abspiele.
