Older Mercedes gauge cluster "cheap fix"

This solution worked for me on my 1997 E420. I soldered a 100-ohm resistor on the tachometer motor in the same fashion as in this video (notice the different sized plastic pins near the solder points on the motor to replicate the same soldering). However, after soldering the tachometer motor, the temperature gauge started having the same issue. After soldering another 100-ohm to the temperature gauge motor, I added an additional 100-ohm to the fuel gauge motor. Only motor that doesn't have a resistor is the speedometer. All is working well, for now. I couldn't find any information on this particular case, but I noticed two solder points for one of the motors have traces going into the same large capacitor. I suspect the soldered-on resistor allows the two coils on the stepper motor to share power through the resistor rather than the capacitor, which could be the defective component. Perhaps someone knows more on this topic. Thank you for the video!

Mine has a problem. 1st there are 2 ic chips the big one they are heating up. 2ndly after taking off the grips, now the car won't start though it's cranking. Yet it was starting before I took off the cluster. 3rd. When I shake the right hand grip or remove it and re install it then on turning the ignition, the lights near the centre lcd turns on but sometimes it goes off but when they do turn up, still it start. Why plz help

Another video used 10ohms as well .Another guy had wrong calculated the colour code value. He lold us he used resister that has colour code with brown black brown gold that means 10x1 and 5%accuracy.

Thank you for the video. I am glad I stumbled upon it. My ‘94 C280 speedometer doesn’t work but at 40 mph or so it will “pop” and work. It does measure speed accurately because I used my phone and neighborhood radar to check speed. I also noticed when warmer weather speedometer issue occurs less often. Curious what you think could be the issue….sensor vs motor?

Quick update….I did put the instrument cluster back together last night (I removed the steering wheel for my process)….I road tested and all gauges work flawlessly. There was a lot of oozing stuff coming off the resting post. I am quite happy! I almost sent my cluster off to someone to fix thinking it was a circuit or gear issue…whew cost and time without car averted

Hey, thanks for the video. I'm having a similar problem with my 99 c230. When I insert the key I am getting a very loud constant beeping. I am also getting the code P1747 Instrument cluster shortage. I bought a replacement instrument cluster and got the same results. Have you encountered something like this before? Any ideas as to what to look for? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
