When the music started, I assumed it was "Message in a Bottle" by The Police. It wasn't, but the opening arpeggio chords sounded very similar!

So there is an archive in Hamburg where they keep all logbooks of all naval voyages since 18something, and they went there and unburied the log of exactly that voyage of exactly that ship, and in it there was an entry that recorded the throwing of exactly that bottle overboard. If you ever wondered whether "German thoroughness" was a real thing, this proves it beyond a doubt.
@KymIllman6 жыл бұрын
They've actually since sent us a picture of their archives, it's thorough indeed, you can see the pic here www.kymillman.com/oldest-message-in-a-bottle/#more-content

Omg can't believe that now one touched that bottle for 131y, at that time us president Grover Cleveland was in office. Great find! Greetings from Finland. I read this story on our biggest daily newspaper Ilta-Sanomat (Evening-News)😀

What a truly wonderful story, which has now gone worldwide! From being tossed overboard from a ship, in 1886 to being found partially buried in sand dunes, probably exposed by the recent freaky weather. The way the bottle was found and the follow up, which revealed its history, is fabulous!

Thanks Rick we spent many hours researching and following up with great assistance from the WA Maritime Museum, the Australian National Maritime Museum and the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency

Yes it is. It's been verified by the WA Maritime Museum with assistance from the Australian National Maritime Museum and the German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. You can check out what they have to say here anmm.blog/2018/03/07/message-in-a-bottle/ and museum.wa.gov.au/about/latest-news/132-year-old-message-bottle-found-on-wa-beach

Just to add some info on this item. The bottle as far as I can tell, is similar to one I have at home. My bottle came from Warri, Nigeria (part of Biafra in prevoius times). These bottles were filled with gin, and were currency for the slave trade, ie 1 bottle of gin - 1 slave. Apparently the striations on one side are caused by laying the bottles on straw (mats) to cool. I don't have mine to hand just now but I believe it comes from the same Dutch company. I don't think many bottles thrown in the sea with the paper sticking out of the neck (as in movies) ever got any far as a few big waves may have seem them slip to the bottom. It would be far better to seal the top with a cork and wax so it could stay afloat easily. An old bottle like this would have caused the finder to look closer, before discovering a letter inside it. This second paragraph is only my theory/opinion about what MAY have happened, so please don't run on at me if it is wrong, better you correct it instead.

Thanks that really interesting to hear about the bottle you have. The WA Maritime Museum have told us they believe our bottle washed ashore within 12 months and was covered by the sand dunes. They believe it may have been periodically exposed and the cork would have shrunk and fallen out. The sand inside the bottle would have helped to create a micro-environment to help preserve the note

Any scientific explanation how a rolled up note would survive seawater and other elements inside an uncorked bottle for so long? Does anyone know how long the bottle was uncorked?
@KymIllman6 жыл бұрын
The WA Maritime Museum have advised us that they believe the cork would have shrunk and simply fallen out and the bottle combined with being covered by sands has provided a good micro climate for preservation. Apparently they have found similarly well preserved items in the sand near the Batavia wreck site off the WA coast.

No, that note didn't survive 131 years in that bottle without a cap. Mabe the note's authentic, but no way it could be a coincidence this was found by the wife of the guy who runs the ambush marketing company called "messages on hold". It's genius though.
@KymIllman6 жыл бұрын
Hard to believe maybe, but true. It was inside the bottle covered by sand. We've been advised by the WA Maritime Museum that the conditions inside the bottle, with the sand created a "micro-climate" enabling the preservation. They've found similarly well preserved items from the Batavia wreck in similar conditions. If you'd like to check the various authorities thoughts on this visit www.bsh.de/de/Das_BSH/Flaschenpost-Sammlung/index.jsp or museum.wa.gov.au/explore/videos/worlds-oldest-message-bottle-discovered-western-australia or anmm.blog/2018/03/07/message-in-a-bottle/ or museum.wa.gov.au/maritime-archaeology-db/paula-1886-message-in-a-bottle
