Tyler Joseph (lead singer) writes all their songs this song is about the music making process and how it is like chlorine where it cleanses Tyler, but also can overwhelm him and become toxic they took a 3 year hiatus between Blurryface and Trench when they really went to stardom, so the chorus refers to that "when i leave don't save my seat, i'll be back when it's all complete, the moment is medical" the creature is Ned - he represents Tyler's creativity - this was the first introduction to him, so you can see he's not ready to go into the water until he thinks it's perfectly ready

Chlorine is cleansing in small doses but too much and it becomes toxic. That’s how Tyler feels about his song writing process. Writing music is often therapeutic but always tapping into these deep places that often times are pretty dark it can be toxic to him mentally too. I also love the line “now you double as a paper maker” Music isn’t just a therapy anymore it’s now become his income and that aspect adds to it being overwhelming

Fun fact about this song: Ned, the little white alien, is a representation of Tyler's (the lead singer) creativity. The chlorine he is referring to is music in general, and in small doses is good for you, but in large quantities can be poisonous. Ned's horns grow when he jumps into the pool, because Tyler's creativity is unbound and free to grow. Its absolutely great visuals, and great lyrics as always. Just wanted to give you a bit of insight.

Tyler has listened to all kinds of music, he likes the Killers, Muse, etc. Tyler started playing a keyboard when he was a kid. As a teenager he was already making music, as an outlet for his mental health issues, depression, anxiety. The first records were done in his parents basement. He had a solo career at first. The band started 2009, with two of his friends. The friends left 2011, he was alone for a moment. However, he had met Josh through the other former band member, so they had known for some time. Tyler asked him to play drums on a gig and Josh quit his day job.

Hey old guys. I'm 42 & have been on a TØP run for the last 4 years. No Phun Intended was Tyler's first solo attempt at an album. Self titled was amazing. Regional At Best was amazing, vessel was amazing, blurryface was amazing, trench was complete. You just cannot go wrong with anything by them. He's self taught all the instruments he's played. He's really I think a musical genius.
@ideasmatter47373 жыл бұрын
I love your discussion of how a band with several members would come up with a sound. The fact that TOP is just 2 guys and that Tyler not only writes all their stuff and produces their beats says a lot about his creativity. Josh, the drummer, is a part of the creative process for sure, but is flexible enough to go any direction with Tyler. Unique, for sure!
@thallakai10 ай бұрын
Actually it's three guys, songwriting and production wise. Tyler, Josh and Paul Meaney.
@Shanejke3 жыл бұрын
There are just 2 of them : Josh -drums, Tyler - singer, songwriter, beats, music instruments (base, ukulele, piano...), production (without label help) , etc About video: The song’s about their music and how it’s like chlorine. Chlorine, in small doses, cleans water and can even be healthy for you. Chlorine can be essential for survival in certain situation because it’s so good at cleaning water; however, the chemical is also poisonous and can kill you if you ingest too much. He is saying that his music is the same way to him. He needs it to survive (it’s a moneymaker and also saves him psychologically and emotionally), but it can overtake him and kill him. “This beat is a chemical”. Without it, he would die. But too much of it can also kill and destroy him. Ned (this funny creature) represents Tyler's (singer) creativity. And they start filling up the pool, but Ned is not satisfied until it is completely filled with chlorine (until song is close to perfect for Tyler ).

55 here, loved so much music over the years.. my last favorite band was linkin park ( R.I.P. Chester ) my regret was never seeing them live. I’m not going to let that happen with twenty one pilots. Ordered my tickets for a concert this year. I’m so excited. Everything I’ve read and seen from videos is they put on the absolutely best live show .. more please 😬🎶
@sanja743 жыл бұрын
The reason for their unique sound may lie in the fact that both of them grew up in strict households and in childhood were exposed only to religious music. Much later than usual they met different genres. Later, Josh had to hide the Green Day album under the bed because of his strict parents. I think that's why they are so original
@tarshnottrash14833 жыл бұрын
To add to the comments about how they write, Tyler has commented on how he knew little about how music should be written. He started playing g around with sounds on a small electric keyboard and just did what he liked. They have no direct inspiration from particular bands but more from random songs all over. Josh was self taught from listening to music recommended by random people& playing along on a drum set in a music store. They were self taught with no boundaries, no rules & just a love for creating. I think this is what gives them their unique sound & is so refreshing in a day and age where ever I’d influenced by someone. You won’t get a bad song. Also I’d love to see you check out Palaye Royale also. They are huge fans of TØP & influenced by MCR and a whole range of old rock, punk & a bit of 60s 70s pop. Another awesome unique sounding band

Awesome reaction guys! Love watching you. My interpretation of the song: chlorine is the inner pain that Tyler (the singer and songwriter) draws from to write his songs. He sips a little but it’s not enough for his fans (Ned the albino baby yoda) so he goes back and drinks more and puts more emotion and pain into the song. The fans like it, but it needs more “chlorine. “ represented by Ned considering diving in to the music. But still not enough. So Tyler goes back and drinks even more. It’s painful for him but it’s what the fans want. It’s also what he makes his living doing (doubles as a paper maker; money) notice Ned (the fans) is hiding behind the car door (from the music video heavy dirt soul, one of their older songs that the fans love.) He is still unwilling to dive into the new songs. But finally it’s enough and Ned dives in. That’s what I think at least. Great job making the parallel to MGMT another underrated band as your friend said. Please do them soon. Do all their hits and then dive deeper. They’re amazing. A deep cut that is incredible is flash delirium off of the congratulations album. Awesome reaction and keep it up!!! Thanks!

Ned (the creature) is a physical representation of Tyler’s creativity. And he can’t swim (create) unless he’s in a place of purity and honesty. (But sometimes it can be too much). Sometimes the very thing (honesty,chlorine) can also be toxic.
@marlenmaciel26633 жыл бұрын
I want to say a couple of things so that you can understand more about the band and make my point that they're a "good band" in every way. The main thing to understand is that they don't offer a product, they offer a service (there is a video from yt that explains it in detail). Their songs can be heard independently, the lyrics of each song have a general meaning and several secondary meanings written in a simple way so that anyone can come up with them. Talking about their musical style is to say that they cover variables of different genres even in the same song that makes this sound unique and their own, but also having the variable many people of different musical tastes can enjoy the rhythms of their songs. It's not necessary to talk about the talent of both, not only in composition, they know how to make music, they know how to use their instruments, they know how to make it sound good both in a song and in a live, the work and effort behind the live acts is remarkable. Now the part of the service where the Clique (fans) enters, when you immerse yourself in their songs it's inevitable that you want to look for more information about them and the meaning, that's where you come across the clique and its theories about each song, but also You come across the albums Blurryface, Trench and very soon SAI, in which each song is connected to the story they are creating (About DEMA), giving each song a third variable in meaning. And they go further, not only albums, not only songs, nor videos are part of the story, they created web pages, games, images, information sites, they talked about real people, they created merchandising that even had a meaning, each advertising, each publication, each performance is connected with it, to the point that there is no way that we do not interact with it, even in a strange way they managed to get into that world and us too. The point is that they met all the requirements to be a "Good Band" not only because of the service but because they love what they do and know how to do it, they love the Clique as much as we love them, they not only created a unique musical style, the fandom is one of the most unique I have been to, suffice it to say that it is not easy to get at least 10,000 people to sing "we're broken people" in chorus, knowing the weight of every little word. Pd: They literally created their own universe of which they are a part and they gave it to us. Who does that?

Yea those lines we’re broken people I want as a tattoo!!!

Very relatable reaction :) If you venture into the Twenty One Pilots world, and it's well worth the journey, you'll see that everything they do musically, lyrically, and visually has meaning. Actually several meanings simultaneously. There isn't anything they do without meaning, a theme that runs throughout their music. And the band is just Tyler Joseph and Drummer Josh Dunn. They write and produce everything themselves. And the name 21 pilots refers to Arthur Miller's play "All My Sons" about a man who knowingly ships faulty engine parts during WWII which results in the deaths of 21 airplane pilots. Decisions come with consequences. Oh, and the little white creature is Ned. He means a lot, too! :)

Oh how I wish Tyler (and Josh) could see your deconstructed options and understanding of the song writing and style. The fact that there is no one who sounds like them is so accurate and that’s what us as fans love so much, it touches not only a very special niche in the industry but Tyler’s approach to writing is like no other and manages to do this in such a real raw and relatable way. I’m so proud of them and how far they’ve come already.
@christineg81513 жыл бұрын
If you're interested in checking out some of how they got where they are (and what a live Twenty One Pilots show feels like), check out the official video for "ode to sleep". It's a fascinating journey from their beginnings, and you get a great feel for how much work they've put into their music. There are better examples for a live performance, but not that will show their progress over time. Also, as far as the imagery, TøP is VERY deliberate in both their word choices and their images. They take an exceptional amount of care in how they portray things, and there are often little easter eggs in videos referring to specific lyrics from other songs, some of the lore surrounding the story behind the whole Trench album (and other TøP lore). I have no idea what Ned represents beyond Tyler's creativity, but I'm positive that there is a reason he looks the way he does, even if it's never been expressed. Even their clothing in various videos is specifically chosen in regards to color, and it's not just because they like the look.
@tankergirl233 жыл бұрын
So true. There is SO MUCH intention that it can be exhausting trying to perceive all of it. But the beautiful thing is that all of that "bonus content" does not need to bee seen/known/heard/understood to enjoy their music. BUT, if you want to "dive in" for more, it is a bottomless pool.

It's interesting that you said that he's cleaning his insides out the hard way because the last 3 albums have been about how he is fighting against these demons (bishops, Blurryface), and maybe he is sippin on straight chlorine because it helps clean out the demons. He's tried everything else, and maybe straight chlorine is the only thing that works for him.

You've heard of Blurryface (was mentioned in Stressed Out, from the album titled Blurryface), he's tylers insecurities personafied, and the lore around him and other representations of everything that surrounds mental health in these guys albums are insane. Specifically the albums Blurryface, Trench and now Scaled and Icy in that order. Theres videos on the lore if you want a crash course, I think you'd be mindblown. It even makes more sense seeing their liveshows after learning the lore.
