Babymetal (Japanese: (ベビーメタル), Hepburn: Bebīmetaru) (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese kawaii metal band. The band consists of Suzuka Nakamoto as "Su-metal" (Vocal and Dance) and Moa Kikuchi as "Moametal" (Scream and Dance). The band is produced by Kobametal from the Amuse talent agency. Their vocals are backed by heavy metal instrumentation, performed by a group of session musicians known as the "Kami Band" at performances.
The band was formed in 2010, with the original lineup of Su-metal (Vocal and Dance), Moametal (Scream and Dance), and Yui Mizuno as "Yuimetal" (Scream and Dance), with the concept of creating a fusion of the heavy metal and Japanese idol genres. Originally a sub-unit of the Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal became an independent act in 2013, following Nakamoto's departure from Sakura Gakuin. Babymetal released their eponymous debut album in February 2014. Their second album Metal Resistance was released worldwide on April 1, 2016. Babymetal has also embarked on several tours, with a majority of their tour dates taking place outside of Asia.
On October 19, 2018, Babymetal announced that Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) had decided to leave the band due to poor health, following her absence from live performances since December 2017. Since her departure, the band has performed with one or more backup dancers at live performances. In 2019, the band introduced three backup dancers called Avengers who performed in rotation at each live show to form a trio with Moametal and Su-metal.

Yui asking how she can get taller is the cutest thing in recorded history. 😅 Those kids are so fun to watch because they seem so carefree and happy but they also so disciplined and dedicated to what they do. They work their butts off on their jobs

Good one, that was their very first interview as BABYMETAL - it must have been when they first formed in 2010, so Su was 12 and approaching 13, Yui and Moa were 11.

🌸 🏫 /⚡ 💀 💕 / 📰 BTW, the "Juonbu" or "Jūon-bu" they kept mentioning is the "Heavy Music Club". "Heavy Music Club" is also a bit of word play, since a "light music club" in Japan is a school band club, that consists of a small group of people who play whatever type of music they like. BABYMETAL were the "Heavy Music Club" of Sakura Gakuin, like the interviewers Ayaka Miyoshi and Airi Matsui were the members of "Scoopers", the Newspaper Club. Ayaka and Airi are both succesful actresses and models now. At around 5' 7", or 171cm, they are also the tallest two Sakura Gakuin graduates.

And Su, at nearly 13, was what, 5’0”? Those two are incredibly tiny! And dart around so fast. The song GJ (good job) has a reference to them “swimming” on the commuter train, quite possibly inspired by their true story... Oh, and look for the Sakura Gakuin short story where Yui wakes up in a tall classmate’s body, good stuff...

If I recall Babymetal history, Yui and Moa were both right around 4'6" when they started in Babymetal. In fact, Moa used to slide under Su's legs during lives of Catch Me If You Can. And, Yui loved to remind Moa that she was her senpai...Yui is 3 weeks older than Moa.

I think they had only 2-3 glasses in Sakura Gakuin, this time Ayaka and Airi wore them. And isn't Yui a bloody heart-stealer? I just love all those Sakura Gakuin clips. Not only the songs they did. Try the nendo class tests from 2010-2014. They are very funny!

I was one of those who put Babymetal down a couple of years ago and as l have written many times l was wrong for that. Part of the realization on my part came when l watched them perform at Aftershock here in Sacramento last year just two weeks after seeing Band-Maid. I don't think they will ever supplant Band-Maid in my world but l enjoyed the show, l stopped putting them down when l realized l would gladly pay to see their show again. Now that being said is there anyone else who liked them better when Yui was on board? I know l do.

Robert I didn’t listen to BABYMETAL when Yui was with them, so I didn’t experience it at the time it happened. Looking back now at the clips, sure I wish she was still around. That they’ve continued on despite the losses is something I find to be inspirational. Another band I like, which also had its share of tragedy, and were considered to be a party band, said (one of them anyway) in an interview that even in the happiest of times, and during the happiest of songs, there is some sadness. Something to that effect anyway. I don’t know... all we can do is take what we are given. Just like BABYMETAL has done. if I could in my own small way do as good a job as they have I’d be very satisfied.

Huge fan of both here. I saw BAND-MAID at the Echoplex in LA on September 30th, and stayed over to see them again the next night. Drove back up to LA on the 11th to see BABYMETAL at the LA Forum. Not kidding when I say that those were a couple of the best weeks in my life.

Babymetal, definitely is not your regular metal band. ;-) But I'm really glad they are not they really add something new. Something completely unexpected and probably something unique that will never happen again ? They own their success to talent and hard work. And they are still having fun doing it. A really good sign.

@@OldMrB On one hand, they can still be kids at times in Sakura Gakuin. But they are extremely professional too. Every year Sakura Gakuin goes to the Tokyo Idol Festival, a lot of idol groups are older there. One of the first years, Sakura Gakuin had a collaboration with an other group they are older. And you could really see a gap a much higher performance quality of Sakura Gakuin girls compared to their older peers. I don't know if it's because of Amuse talent picking or the girls hard work or because they started at a young age and learned faster or the quality of the staff ? Probably all of the above. These girls kick ass when it comes to performing. I think the hard work comes in part from a place of a feeling of: "this is my chance, this is an amazing opportunity" All while Japanese school is considered one of the toughest in the world. And still, if the Sakura Gakuin girls or Babymetal didn't do well in school they would get into trouble, because even though Amuse is a company, they still put school before work. Their are stories of Babymetal at western metal festivals doing homework between looking pretty and giving interviews, performing on stage and training to learn a new song they've not performed live yet. If fans aren't inspired by these girls for things like that then I think they've just not looked deep enough what was really going on and it's not because they were pushed, but because the girls pushed themselves. Just can't be anything else then impressed when you know. :-)
