What's funny is that back in the 80's and 90's Olds engines were all considered boat anchors. Everyone had or wanted Chevy or Ford motors (once in awhile you'd see a built-up Pontiac motor). That was the only thing to have if you wanted to make power. Now Olds engines are seeing interest. Maybe because there aren't many Chevy/Ford engines left, or maybe because these "exotic" engines are the in-thing now.

Correct..depending on the max secondary air valve angle, Q-jets were all between 730 and 800 cfm. Olds used 730 on the 330/350's and 780 on the 400, 425 and 455. Even the old 4GC Rochester from 65 and earlier was up to 692cfm.

Some shops hook the dynos hot water to the their heating tank. And get "free heat" for their shops. And sometimes when they run high hp engines they need to stuff snow into the heat radiator that was placed outside the shop for extreme cases. When they really push a racing engine simulating a track session or rally stage. And not just run a engine through the rpm range.
@builtfordtough44994 жыл бұрын
I had a '70 350 rocket i balanced/blueprinted back in the day. I'm pretty sure it was over 400 with the edlebrock intake. The compression was up there with flattops but it ran on pump gas. I don't think your running enough cam. I ran an Isky 280 and it pulled a good 500 rpm further and had plenty of vac, your carb of choice all ran fine. Actually the 750 DP was the strongest but i never tried it when i had the car because i thought it would be too much, lol.

The same guy also bought another Rallye 350 in the spring, pretty much a Survivor car with some Rust, but a really strong built 350. I took it for a test drive, and the back tires just wouldn't stop spinning! If he was more aggressive, I wouldn't mind racing all three that he has, two automatics and one four Speed. Maybe next summer I'll show his whole collection of three Rallye 350s, and I also have a 409 Biscayne that he found for me, and he'd like to buy, but I like my 3 409 Chevys!

@CORVAIRWILD2 жыл бұрын
310hp, NOT 325hp. The 325 was the W31 option, and was never offered on any but the W31 Ram Rod. The Rallye had but 1 engine, the pedestrian 350 310 4bbl. Same idea as the W30 455
@CORVAIRWILD2 жыл бұрын
You are correct in the 330 having 320 horsepower, but I doubt that that was accurate. It's just too much. Almost one horsepower per cubic inch in an engine that was offered in so many different models, that was supposed to have smoothness and quiet operation? Probably more like 290 or 300 at the most, hard to believe Oldsmobile over rateed their engine

Those 350 Rallys were total pigs on the street and ugly to top it off. Yellow bumpers? Are you kidding? I'm an Olds fan and a buddy of mine had a 327/300 HP Chevelle that would kill those cars at any speed. Now. A W31. That was a killer street car.
@CORVAIRWILD3 жыл бұрын
You're correct about the yellow bumpers, the cars didn't sell. But when they put body colored all the challenger and 'Cuda, it was a hit. Go figure. And the Rallye 350 was just a trim package. The W31 was an entirely different motor. But this motor was built hot like a W31. We'll see how it runs the summer, I'm in touch with the owner...

@CORVAIRWILD5 жыл бұрын
Welllll.... I DISTINCTLY recall seeing net ratings in my 1971 manuals, both factory owners and shop. A Google search is somewhat conflicting, so let's say we're both correct. My mother ordered a new Pontiac T37 in late winter 1971, and I devoured any factory issued literature, and there's no question in my mind that along with compression and low lead compatibilty, factory HP ratings dropped to net in 1971.
