Technique #2015: lay a paper towel over the contact cement then soak it with mineral spirits when the cement is dry and old. Let it sit for quite some time. If it's really bad, lay plastic wrap over it and it can soak for hours without drying up.

I was the one who exclusively did tops in our shop for a few years in the late 70’s. One year I did 1000. Most were padded Cadillacs Buicks and Oldsmobiles. I have the arthritis in my hands to prove it. (And I did buy a few windshields.)

Hello Fire, my brother! Yep, I used to get a lot of new cars from the dealer and put tops on for them to get more profit. Padded tops, French rear windows, 1/4 and 1/2 tops. Later were the simulated convertibles. See, I'm going down memory lane. Please keep liking and watching!

Bucks a gallon when this glue makes contact with each other you cannot pull it apart no matter how hard you try I'm using that glue on some upholstery stuff I'm doing on our 65 SS Impala thinking on doing a one piece headliner IV been to a fabric store here in Phoenix Arizona called HNR fabrics got a factory fabric color the same color as the original factory

Hello Edgar, Great question! That's easy. American cars of the 60's though 80's. Sportier cars like Mustangs and Camaros never had a padded vinyl top from the factory. Only luxury cars like Lincoln and Cadillac had padded tops. See? There we go. Please keep liking and watching!

Owner's Tip: If your car has a worn or torn vinyl top, repair or replace ASAP. The rip will allow moisture to build up between the vinyl and metal roof. The moisture will eventually rust out your roof leading to more repairs.

Now did anyone catch that Rudy called that plain vinyl top, a landau top, isn't a landau roof on a car cover something like only a 1/3, or 1/2 of the roof, kinda like what was on the Chrysler Cordoba. The only reason I know this once upon a time I had a boyfriend, who's dad took us out to the boonies & show off his prowess at shooting a new rifle he bought & they determined that the target would be a Styrofoam cup floating in the water close to the bank on the other side of the river. I happened to be off to the side watching as my boyfriend's dad leaned across the back quarter of the roof while sighting in his brand new Rifle, my boyfriend was a little on the short side, as was his father, so his father Say's watch and learn, so he's leaning across the top of his wife's car, I'm still looking at him from angle, which to me it looks like the barrel of the rifle is aimed down towards the roof of the car, but because nobody is standing at my angle they don't see it and try to warn him, and I thought he knew what he was doing so I didn't try to say anything either. Well after shooting the gun at 1st he didn't notice anything, other than just missing by a hair and a little bit of Styrofoam flew off the cup. He says dam I just missed, I said yeah if that bullet hadn't hit the vinyl on your landau top I'm sure you would have nailed it. Then he and both son's look over at the roof, the son's started laughing yeah way to go dad, Larry the father say's if you knew that was gona happen why didn't you say something, I said well you did say watch and learn, then he sheepishly flipped me the bird and say's now I gota put a new landau top on my wife's car. It's all fun and games til someone shoots the landau top off there car needless to say it was real quiet on the ride home. Don't get me wrong a landau top is only part of the roof, that gets covered by vinyl, whereas a vinyl top is the whole top being covered by vinyl but Rudy knows this I was just giving him a bit of the brown stuff. And never shoot across the top of your car if you don't know that you'll clear the top of it when shooting it or you deserve what you get.

Many times the roof is rusted out under the vinyl top. Factory tops often were poorly painted underneath.
