Fascinating to see the operation. Sadly, I was a bit young in the heyday of the Amiga and was oblivious to all of this. Ended up finding myself in front of fruity loops though. 😂

There was no feeling like when you got your multiple breakbeats on the right part of the 64 steps and the speed fine tuned right. A room of MIDI instruments was better but some of us couldn't afford that because we were so young, and I think this was actually faster than MIDI workflow.

Same here. 90% of the time it sounded shit but then you'd get two breaks that just fit perfectly and it was sublime.

Damn! This was incredible! So weak compared to todays standards of DAW, yet you accomplished so much more and with the authentic grit and crunch too! This reminds me of 95, when I used to fool around on Scream/Impulse tracker, after school! I really love the aliasing present on that sine wave bass, when you transpose it in pitch. That whine it makes it so genuine! This is the best video from you yet and I hope you do more like this!

Weak? efficient more like. I've got Cubase and I've used Logic in the past, they're bloated and inefficient, all this moving between mouse, computer keyboard and MIDI keyboard. Was struggling with creativity until I decided to focus on learning the tracker Renoise, can do pretty much everything with the computer keyboard, it's much easier, no wading through 10 huge menus. I've got a vast array of external gear, too many synths to remember. But at the end of the day it's no use if you can't motivate yourself to sit down and use it all to the max.

@@RaveyStabs I moved on to Renoise after FT2, it's amazingly versatile but just didn't feel as fast to do the basic stuff at first (plus no Nibbles button!). I recently installed the Windows 10 port of FT2 and while it instantly felt familiar it still took me longer than it should to work out how to even open a file :-) Did you ever try Scream Tracker? I don't know what it was about it but I just couldn't get on with any version, I remember it still having that feeling of an internal demo group tool rather than something for public release if that makes sense.
@RaveyStabs5 жыл бұрын
@@ndrinks5550 I did try Scream briefly (had a mate into it) but couldn't get into it, but it did have resonance filter if I remember. Another cool tracker was Skale Tracker (based on FT2 with VST support but abandoned pretty quickly) but I still use it and FT2 I have working under DOSbox. I've not totally got into Renoise either. If you keep an eye on the channel though I'm hoping to release a VST/AU plugin that is somewhat tracker based, just solving some final bugs.

Awesome! I've never owned an Amiga, my setup was always just MIDI. I absolutely love the hard crunchy sound of the Amiga though, and I'm thinking of getting one. But a question: this seems to be as much as you can squeeze out of 4 tracks - any reason why you are not using the 8 tracks that seem to be available in Octamed? Does this degrade the sound too much? I know that I could just use Renoise on a PC for loads of tracks, but I'd miss the crunchy Amiga sound then.
@RaveyStabs4 жыл бұрын
Yes i would say it degrades too much, but past 4 midi channels you can branch into MIDI channels, and up to 64 in OctaMED ss

Was predicting your track mutes & unmutes - I'd record that kind of thing onto cassette ;)
@RaveyStabs2 жыл бұрын
yes, it's a great way of chiseling out a track and I still do similar on a Mackie MCU today. Basically record a 20-30 minute take of mutes/solos/fades, listen back and pick out the best bits, condensing that down into a shorter 5 to 7 minute track and adding a bit more to transitions. It's a way out of arrangement block and you feel the performance rather than try to pre-script it, which has become the norm.

Why is octaMED not playing the rest of the sample when you loaded it up? It only played a bit of the sample and it went silent even though there was audio data there? 0:32
@RaveyStabs2 жыл бұрын
Too long/memory, I think it tails off at a certain point even when you have a lot of memory (relatively speaking!), and so when the sample is over a certain size it only plays the first bit. Likewise you'll also notice out of memory issues when I tried to trim a long sample from the front.

Cool vid.. only watched 6 mins so far but why use SPD and not BPM?
@RaveyStabs4 жыл бұрын
Good question. I started off just using SPD (the default) and when setting tempo it was always adjusted to make the pitched breakbeat fit/loop correctly, as was often the case even with hardware samplers. Also, perhaps people weren't as BPM obsessed then as they are now, and I didn't think about it much, just setting the tempo to what felt right for the track and got used to the numbering!

Welp, that naff-ness monster I made in SchismTracker (Impulse-Tracker clone) maybe not so naff afterall.... Also, I guess there are other people whom can't get anything that isn't outright noise from a modern DAW (LMMS, Magix, FruitLoops, etc) and yet can get something listenable out of a tracker DAW (Impulse/Schism, Renoise, Protracker/pt2, etc)?
@RaveyStabs3 жыл бұрын
Whatever works! For me I keep on coming back to trackers because they just seem to flow better & are quicker to get ideas down with, which generally leads to better musical ideas/combinations that can get detailed quite quickly. I usually finish up in a DAW for adding more detailed effects, eq, mastering, often arranging parts, but have started to use Renoise more for arranging now too, which is a brilliant piece of software once you get into it/customise.

Hi mate how is your mixer connected to this and once I have sequenced a whole tune how do I mix it on the mixer and then send stems and full track to my daw please help
@RaveyStabs2 жыл бұрын
Here I just recorded the main stereo outs, which gives you two channels (2 of the tracks in one, 2 in the other), then I narrow the Amiga's wide stereo but didn't completely mono it to keep some and I didn't do any processing (other than video software limiting). If I was going to mix properly I would record each channel in isolation by muting the others or depending on the track layout (with only 4 channels you generally re-use with different instruments at different song sections) you might stem record pieces and reconstruct the arrangement in the DAW. Or you might get away with just mastering the stereo 2 track depending on how it sounds. Filt/boost in OctaMED's sample editor can give you a primitive eq (I used it to brighten the stab a bit in the vid).

@RaveyStabs2 жыл бұрын
@@wordofmouthpress3724 Ah you've got a S950, plot thickens. If you want to multitrack you're probably best putting all your samples into the S950 and using the Amiga to sequence it via MIDI, then the multi-outputs from it either into a mixer (if oldschool mixing with eq/aux sends then mixer outs to DAW) or connect all those outputs directly into a multi-input audio interface for direct to DAW recording all individual tracks at once. I do the latter and don't work with mixers anymore.
