I used the sanding technique to fix a 5 thou warp on my nearly 200 mph motorcycle and saved a $1700 head. No problems, just time and elbow grease. A lot of people never had to fix their car over the weekend to get to work on Monday with NO money in their pocket. Necessity makes for a mechanic that can think out of the box. Keep it up bro! You are the man!

Been doing this for years, but a little different. We use a pane of glass on a table gluing the wet sandpaper to it. Then, using the weight of the head, just move it in a figure 8 pattern... works great! Love the channel.

Oldskool is cool....one suggestion on the heads. Use a very large magic marker to paint the head contact surfaces prior to sanding. The high spots will get worn off first and the low spots will be visible. The marker washes off with a little solvent. This will help get a flat surface at the cost of $2.00. Another suggestion is to shine a flashlight under the straight edge when checking for clearances. Go for light tight clearances....This may help things go a little easier. Great video. Do it yourself!

Brad Deal A better alternative is toolmakers blue marking ink. It dries fast and has a brush in the cap to spread it on thin. High lights the low spots. Got my last can at Graingers for $5.

Nothing wrong with doing it this way! A slang name for a big file is a "hand mill." Good to use a precision straight edge to check your work as you go. I do Harley oil pump bodies (and other small stuff) in a figure 8 pattern. You can put a little machinist dye, or scribble a sharpie on your surface as you get closer to see the low spots easier towards the end. Rock on, brother!

Thanks for all the love and hate peepz much love and respect to you all. As most of you know this channel Glorifies my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Some may get offended but its straight up 100% me and I will not compromise and waiver my faith to appease the people I dont seek the praises of men nor do I tell anyone to click like or sub. I preach the word of God and my main concern is for your soul and heart to be right with Jesus Christ. God has blessed me with the gift of giving and thats what I will continue to do as long as im able to. Now I did say I only read the King James Bible and many will be offended by me opposing all other versions. I urge you to do your due diligence because if your reading any bible and or material that is not of God, you may be dealing with a false teaching that maybe cursed. I have done heavy research on the origins of Christianity, all the major religions and the historical writings and manuscripts of the King James Bible. So Im not just telling you what someone told me, I never believe anything until I get the FACTS and I am a research fanatic when it comes to anything this deep. The Holy Bible has always been under attack and the devil is responsible for ALL false doctrines so Remember this there are many verses that have been omitted and changed in the new bible versions and there are many false Jesus s in the world. many bible publishers who created new versions had to change 10% of the original wording to avoid copyright infringement, so they changed the word FOR MONEY, then justifying it by making/ saying its easier to understand, But jeopardizing the word of God and cursing MANY PEOPLE. Thats why God said "WHOEVER CHANGES OR ADDS TO THIS BOOK let him be acursed. Ask God for wisdom and discernment to understand the King James and if you are sincere and seek him with all your heart he will give you the understanding. Do not fall into the lie that no one can understand it, as long as you read it through his holy spirit you will understand. The reason why the atheist, scientist and prideful cannot get it is because they dont have the spirit of God guiding them to truly discern and understand. So they interpret through the eyes of the flesh and what they believe is right in their own heart because they dont seek the Lord with the right intentions. Do your due diligence and research on the first Greek translation from "Erasmus" who wrote the Textus Receptus, study all the other versions before the king James in 1611 know and learn the roots of how God preserved THE WORD up to now Dont letem foolya! King James Only God Bless.

I'd like to ask you for some advice if i may. I have a 1993 jeep GC straight 6- 4.0. Everything is stock except for the lift and tires. It averages about 90 degrees here in the summer. I have recently been having some overheating problems. I had the water pump, thermostat, and temp sensor replaced. The clutch fan is supposedly "good". It has almost 200k miles on it. Its been taken good care of, oil changes, flushes, etc. It runs about 210 when driving but with the ac on sitting in traffic it will rise to as high as 230 or more. The radiator is the only thing left to replace really. It's using the standard 195 thermostat. I realize this question is rather redundant but, should i replace the radiator next? Any ideas what it could be?

I did the same technique on my 1968 Morris Minor cast iron cylinder head. It was out by 4 thousandths- bulged in the middle. Except I used 120 grit paper, then 180 grit glued to the flat steel table of my pillar drill. Lubricated with WD-40. Worked fantastically well, the car runs better than it ever did, with noticeably more torque for getting up hills. Cost £5 for the gasket, and a couple of £ for glue, abrasive paper and WD-40.

I'd also like to ask if you believe we are created in the image and likeness of God, and why we can exist as a Trinity of mind body and soul, but God cannot? WILL YOU QUIT? Whether you like it or not life is going to test you to see if you are as strong as you claim to be. If your strength is VALID and you have been tried and tested then life is still not done trying to break you and you will plow right through it. True warriors are not built during the happy moments, or when everything seems to go well. A solid warrior is built with strong character during their darkest moments when the Storm's of life hit hard trying to get you to fold, waiver your strength, and QUIT. You will see many drop and buckle during their test because they have no strong foundation and have not been conditioned to endure yet. If you know me, you know I always tell people to never run from the pain but to run straight to the pain and HANDLE IT! . The bible says the race is not given to the strongest, fastest or smartest but it is given to the one that ENDURES UNTIL THE END. key word is ENDURE. My foundation is in and through Jesus Christ, and no that does not mean I am exempt from hard times or heavy struggle, as a matter of fact I get hit harder and face a lot more temptation now that I have dedicated my life to living for Christ. But it only drives me to lean on God more and increases my faith. My point: Whatever your going through, establish your foundation and faith in Christ, don't ever think you don't have anymore fight left in you, refocus your efforts and get right back up and keep swinging because if you don't ENDURE through the pain, life will break you down one day at a time until it finds the quit in you. DO NOT QUIT KEEP ON SMASHIN IN LIFE! IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME.

While raised non-denominational Christian, I later dismissed religion as the contrivance of man and currently do not suscribe to any religious beliefs. However, I do fully endorse and suscribe to many of the moral and ethical components you have elaborated upon and I have great respect for your genuine, politely resolute, position and positive attitude. You sincerely share your thoughts and make no demands. I respect that. Additionally, I am very grateful for all the mechanic's tips and tricks you have chosen to share here. This channel is a jewel. Flattening a head with MDF and sandpaper was a real neat trick, one I would not have thought possible. As is, I have some old pool table slate on hand should I need to follow suit. Hope not, but at least I have decent flat surface to work from should things go sour after disassembly. Local automotive machine shop have a two month waiting list and I cannot wait that long. With respect to the mechanical realm, I just bought a 1997 Tacoma with the 2.4L 2rz-fe engine. and have significant engine oil in the coolant, but zero coolant in the engine oil. The weasel of a seller had tried to mask the problem with copious quantities of head gasket sealer and I missed it. I later drained a few ounces of engine oil into a glass jar to look for separation and detect none after letting it sit for several hours. I have drained, flushed, and replaced the ATF fluid and filter and have also temporarily bypassed the transmission cooler in the radiator to eliminate that element in my diagnosis. it should be noted that the engine seems to run smoothly and makes good power. Given your automotive experience and expertise, where might the cross contamination come from? I first suspected a head gasket failure between oil and water passages and have purchased a full Fel-Pro kit and new head bolts. Then, after seeing as how both the water pump and oil pump are located behind the timing chain cover, might something there be a possible culprit? At 166,000 miles on the clock, I plan to replace most everything involved just to buy once, cry once, and feel confident that it will serve me fine for the rest of my days. Your thoughts, sir? Thank you.

Quick summary of the mechanical: Get 4 flat particleboard blocks. Smooth edges. 2 will have 80 grit, 2 150 (use wet/dry paper) Assemble blocks with spray glue and staples. Use oil on block/head and sanding block and bring it down to flat. Check for flatness on occasion. Wash sanding block as you go in water. On engine block make sure to cover ports to keep debris out. Use the 150 for finer finishing of surface. Mr. Old-school recommends copper spray gasket and MLS gaskets.

To all you Warriors for Christ, be sold out and fully committed without compromising your faith in Jesus Christ, so you can't BE BOUGHT. In other words don't sell out, become immoral and live a Godless life that is contrary to the word of God. Selling your soul comes in many different forms They say every man has a price DO YOU HAVE A PRICE? Money Cars Sports Lust Fornication Adultery Pornography Homosexuality (Leviticus 18:22) Occultic New Age practice (Old lies) Drugs yes over the counter and legalized weed counts Alcohol Atheism Depression (it's a choice) Lying Stealing Gambling Many more Which one is poison to you? Lets get this straight I do not endorse anything God considers an abomination and dont try to flip the scriptures and try to change the word of God. I have gay family members and they know I stand firmly for Christ and I love them with all my heart but I do not endorse their life style and they clearly know that. I dont hate any gay person AT ALL I got so much love for them that I am willing to take some hits to keep them from perishing in hell. Would you do the same? or would you assume and twist Gods word to make every body feel comfortable in their sin just so they can be outside of Gods will and go to hell. Dont get it twisted.

You´re going through very difficult times, it must be very hard for you. I wish you the best and hope that you overcome your addiction, the fact is that most of our problems that we get into as adults are a result of our behavior that has been strongly marked by the emotional scars that our parents or adults that took care of us when we were children, and they themselves went throughout this very same things and so on backwards as long chain of suffering. But the Bible gives us consolation that soon God will remove all evil and from the earth and still gives the opportunity for all human beings to search for Him, whose name Jehovah the Almighty God and He wiil let himself be found by you. Bible says in James 4:8 "Draw close to God, and he will draw close to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you indecisive ones."

I remembered reading an article a few decades ago about using 1/4" or thicker plate glass. attaching sandpaper to it and pushing the head back and forth on it. This was back in Model T Ford days. I then read about people doing that in the comments, including using a glass coffee table. Good to see it. Definitely useful for lawn mower heads too.

People like to ridicule this, but back in your grandfathers or great grandfathers day, this sort of thing was common. Every machinist knew how to "scrape in" a set of surface plates for instance. You take three cast iron plates and machine them as "flat" as you reasonably can. Then smear one in Prussian blue. Place two face to face. The high spots rub off. Then use a chisel to shave down the high spits where the blue ribbed off. Now repeat with the third plate. Continue through all permutations of the three plates until the three plates converge to flatness. You can get to a thousandth or better across the whole plate. This was common. I bet back in the day they wouldn't even bother making it flat, they would probably have scraped in the two surfaces so they mate up, and call it good.

Michael allen yeah it was .. and compression ratios were a minuscule fraction of what we have now. This dude is flipping cars after this shotty work... it’s a whopping 20-30 bucks to have it done professionally at a machine shop .. but what the hell does he care? Once the sucker drives off and he has his cash he doesn’t even think about what they’re going to do when they warp a head with a slow leak from this “old school” mulling procedure and get stranded somewhere after they foolishly relied on this tool bag to sell them a professionally repaired vehicle... also im pretty damn sure that whatever “perfect flatness “ as this idiot calls it, is nowhere near a precision straight edge you would get if you spent the 20 bucks on a real mill job...

Like the idea back when working in machine shop making airplane parts. .we used to put blue dye (brush or spray) on the aluminum part of the resurface area only.Try to find wet or dry sand paper 2000-3000 grit..need s to have sticky on back. Find a (glass or mirror) try to have it 1 or 2 ft longer than cylinder head. Then apply sand paper onto the glass w/sticky side down. The area of resurfacing your going to apply the blue dye. (doesnt take long to dry) resurfacing area on top of sand paper you should have 3-4 sheets, side to side..stuck to glass. take the cylinder head resurfacing area, apply it on top of sand paper. Move cylinder head back and forth with the sanding process. Remove cylinder head check the resurfacing to see if any blue dye..if so continue sanding. The glass is the flatest surface you can use and the blue dye will assist you of where the high and low areas are on the resurfacing area Please shoot a video when you try it.

I'm from Oz and there are a lot of ppl living outside the cities here - it's another reason why this technique is so valuable. Sometimes the car getting the head gasket is your *only* car - you have to get everything you need in town and limp the poor car home with its many problems. So after you pull the head off you are stuck with no recourse to 'head shops' - you *have* to do it yourself. This knowledge is brilliant. Thanks mate - funny that I should get this info from an American when it must have been standard practice when my dad was a bush mechanic so many years ago... My Festiva's head was only 4 thou out of flat so it was an easy job. I stuck two sheets of sand paper (120 grit) to a glass coffee table, lubricated it with engine oil and dragged the head back and forth over it. It took about 1000 cycles in all, I broke it up into sessions of a few hundred motions cos I'm a bit disabled but got it done in an afternoon. btw if you have troubles with the sandpaper catching the head cut the offending corner off with a sharp blade.

Good thinking. Thank you. I’ve done several head repairs, stuck valves, gaskets etc, usually overnight on some piece of equipment that has to go in the morning, or ASAP. Usually with some one tapping their foot wondering what’s taking so long.... I have to admit, this hadn’t occurred to me, or as another video run the head over sand paper stuck to a bench. To anyone complaining, this is a big saver for people with out access to a machine shop. I have nothing close to a machine shop, and over night repairs don’t allow for it. All to do with down time and not have to crate heads or blocks and ship them out. Thank you for posting, much appreciated.

Thanks for this video, I did this on my old 22re head after the machine shop quoted me 375$ for machining and a valve job. I spent 20$ on a 4ft piece of melamine, glue, and 150 and 400 grit sandpaper. I glued three sheets to each side of the plank, make sure to press the sandpaper with another board while the glue is drying so it's flat on the board. Once dry, I slid the head back and forth across the plank. After I was done I couldn't even see light between the straight edge and head. As others mentioned there are a lot of shavings and dust that has to be removed or you'll grenade your engine. I used a pressure washer to clean the head, then blew it dry with compressed air. Make sure to remove the valves, lap the valves, and replace the seals. I saved 350$ and only spent two or three hours reconditioning the head. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge!

I have a table saw with a good flat cast iron table. I sprayed adhesive on the saw table, laid 2 pieces of 150 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper end to end, sprayed with wd-40 and removed all pitting in less than 30 minutes work. Head is out by less than .001 inches. Much Thanks and may God reward your faithfulness.

From someone who has been struggling with believing in God , staying away from addictions, alcoholism, and constant family problems for the past 2 years. Your who I aspire to become one day. Your faith is so strong and you speak the truth man. I wish I could spend a summer with you side by side working on Honda's. I know I wouldn't even care about marijuana and liquor and sex addictions because I would be doing something productive and real beneficial to the soul. My dad is a preacher, grew up and had a rough life. Let him down more than once. I am 20 going on 21 I have finally gained some self control. I have not been drunk and have only had 2 beers since new years. I have been hitting the gym 5 days a week and keeping a healthy diet. I broke my tibia and shattered my wrist when I was an alcoholic. It has not been easy but I push my self everyday to not fall back into the darkness aka depression/anxiety. I am on track to becoming who I know God wants and needs me to become. I want to be an entrepreneur, I decided this when I broke my leg and had no way of bringing in income but I still smoked a lot of marijuana. I decided I would start up an eBay account and begin selling old video games I had laying around from when I was a kid. Ended up selling those pretty quick and decided I needed to get some more inventory. My mother drove me around thrift stores, garage sales, pawn shops you name it. And I managed to make 1000 dollars in one month after a little bit of time went by. Ever since then I started selling motorcycle accessories and equipment for a gentlemen I met while buying my car on craigslist. He was a successful entrepreneur with a beautiful wife, Porsche SUV, and a warehouse with employees which he paid. Through God's blessing I was hooked up with him and he allows me to sell anything in his warehouse as long as we split the profits. He even has a shipper who ships every single order for me. I have come a long way from where I began. I will never go back to the dark days alone drinking liquor and popping pills in my basement alone at 11 am to get my day started. My next goal is to start working on my 2000 Honda civic ex manual I bought. Again, I bought an older car after selling my 2006 Acura TL W/ 18" Rims with a manual transmission because 1. I didn't want a luxury vehicle any longer (too flashy & expensive to repair) and 2. I wanted a new challenge, to drive stick shift like a pro like I have always wanted to ever since I bought my first civic back in the day. Your videos show me with a little bit of will power and willingness to work, you can work on your car if you want to. Its not hard, you just have to follow directions and be prepared. Stay blessed man your the truth.
