Just finishing up my transmission now. I haven't built a transmission in 24 years (since high school) and these videos were the perfect companion to rebuild manuals and other online sources. This is a little trick I learned when installing the direct drum into case, use the forward hub in place of the flat pressure plat as a handle. It makes this job easier, after you have it in place, switch out the pressure plates. Pay attention to those t-bearing when you take it apart, very easy to get them wrong. The gasket on the rear servo can be installed backwards, causing no reverse, pay attention to how it goes on.

wow! never mind my question on your other vid.. it was answered in these 2 videos.. very informative! i will be undertaking this job this coming winter as my 401 is almost complete, and i have the quadratrac trans.. the only thing i didn't like is the lack of speedometer. i need to figure out a way to machine that boss to accept one.

You left out all of the wave steels, is this for a racing application? I watched a lot of TH400 videos and they said without the wavy steels it will shift hard into gear! I am currently working on one myself and need to decide on wether or not to put these in or which ones to leave out. Great video, Thanks! B

Awesome video! It couldn't have came at a better time. I have my 74 H/O trans out and all apart and ready to be put back together. First time doing this so you have shed a little light on some of the stuff the book I have didn't. On a side note can you use a large C-clamp to press the clutch springs down as long as I have some kind of spacer to not interfere with the center? I don't have a press.

What does removing the spring under the 2-3 accumulator piston accomplish? I thought the wavy plates in the clutches were designed to make the transmission shift more smoothly. Is there an advantage to replacing them with smooth plates? Great video. Bob

Both of those modifications are suggested to make the trans shift quicker and in turn harsher. This trans was used in a performance application.

Love your video and the details. Im attempting to drop the direct clutch assembly through the frictions like you did on 7:59. Is there any other way of telling if its fully engaged? I was under the impression that I installed and all engaged but having problems puting the pump cover back on.

Great video thanks, also would be great-full for some further info if possible please RE: >the spool valve closest to the 2-3 accumulator (@20.41min/seconds top left of screen on this video), my valve looks identical to the valve in this video but the workshop manual shows a *second relief value & second spring*?, wasn't sure if i had lost these 2 pieces. (BTW the picture in the workshop manual shows a slightly different looking value, only 2 radial valve surfaces rather than 3 as your video shows). I just don't want to put it together & then have to strip it down again. Be great-full for your consideration. Cheers.

This trans worked fine when all was done. There were quite a few variations on valve/spring assmblies in these valve bodies.

I see that for the direct drum you kept the steel piston but used an aluminum piston for the forward clutch. Why is this, what's the advantage? Also, are the pistons the same between the two clutch assemblies? Working on rebuilding a 400 for my 69 Buick Special Deluxe 430-BBB. Great video. Thank you. Jake

Pistons come in steel and aluminum with no real advantage either way that I'm aware of. I just used what I had.

with the forward drum not being a "shifting" drum, why wouldn't you put the waffled clutches in the direct drum instead? to me it looks like it would help get the oil out of the way as that clutch engages. just a question, i'm not saying you are wrong.

have an inch n qtr clearance from the forward clutch to the base of the oil pump as u recommended that is should be. but when tightening the bolts on oil pump, tranny locks up. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanx....

Great video thanks. I watched both to try to find the reason behind my problem. I bought a new B&M TH400 for my 40 Stude and just got the engine built. Problem is all forward gears work but if you put in reverse it acts like you are standing on the brake ad no movement. Anyone have Ideas?

Another question: What are you using as a stand to hold the case upright while you drop your parts in? @@NoahPorch I use a five gallon plastic bucket, I lay a piece of 1/2 inch plywood over the top of the bucket, take a hole saw and drill a hole larger than the output shaft. Stand the trans upright on the plywood, and the shaft fits into the hole. You can also work on the pump, forward drum, and assemble the gear train.

What did you end up doing for the speedo? I'm going to be doing the same thing, th400 out of a FSJ bolted behind the 360 in my 71 Javelin. Also, how did you compensate for the 4 degree rotation on the th400 with the cross member in the Javelin? did you just shim the trans mount?

I would never attempt to rebuild myself. However, I have been having issues with transmission fluid blowing out of the dipstick. I watched your video from start to finish in an attempt to triage my problem. However, I know this is beyond me. I have an increased appreciation for the delicate nature of the TH400. I want to have an intelligent conversation with the mechanic I take my TH400 to for repair. Any words of advice?

I have a th400 in a 88 c3500 built by monster anyway it has around 7000 miles on it two weeks ago it shifted funny into 3rd gear after about a 1/4 mile it straighten up and shifted fine (when going into 3rd gear it would feel like it went into neutral like the direct clutch wasn't getting enough pressure) then for two weeks it drove fine always shifted very firm and this morning I went to pay a utility bill and I went to back up and no reverse or third gear how can I air check the direct clutch while its in the truck? can you do a short video I believe I have a bad leak somewhere in the direct clutch circuit please message me if you can give me some pointers thanks
